I think it needs to be something that has been moderately successful before by the original to be considered, otherwise you could have big hits like "she's the One" (world Party) and "Love is All around" (the Troggs) which no one had heard of before the cover (not the groups but the song).

It does open it to 'what determines if it was a hit for the original' etc but yes I agree with that in principal.

Looking at a few rather famous covers (the ones that instantly spring to mind for me) although they are known as being covers they didn't actually have a huge amount of success 1st time round.

I know a lot of Jimi Hendrix's songs were covers, but I wouldn't have thought they were that famous before he did them...

I think its your call Hero as to allow them or not.

After all, you did such a great job of vetting the "metal" choices.....

Haha... bat out of hell was my choice, I probably got lucky to get so many votes Metal is not my best subject.

I'd class it as a cover if it obviously has a large portion taken from the original or originals.
