Re: surrey vs somerset match thread
Well today ended a lot better than I thought it would, decent fightback from Maynard, Batty and Lewis followed by a brilliant burst from Meaker leaves us in with a slim chance of victory, although we'll need to get the last 3 before they get to 200 I reckon which is unlikely. At least we have the batting line up to chase a target quickly!

Re: surrey vs somerset match thread
After a dire first day plenty of twists and turns in this match. Excellent bowling by Meaker
Very difficult to say what will happen on the final day. We do have a small but realistic chance of victory - maybe not dissimilar to position against Worcs.

Re: surrey vs somerset match thread
Meaker takes 8 second innings wickets to bowl Somerset out for 180 and set us 305 for a win.
Tremendous effort from Meaker giving him eleven in the match.
Johnny Barran - much more astute than the silly a*se 'Lord Barran' image he plays up to - confidently predicts a Test future.
We should have about 85 overs to face. In the words of Churchy: ''All things are now possible.''
Roy opening. If he bats for 90 minutes ....

What a performance from the Streaker! Good job we didn't 'rest' him!
Davies gone early but Reindeer and J-Roy(surprisingly!) steadying the ship!
Excitement could reach fever pitch this afternoon - Come on the 'rey' Oh aye and COYI!!

66-1 at lunch.
Roy and Reindeer batting with sense and maturity after the early loss of Davies.
239 more to win off what should be a further 67 overs. Keep ticking over, keep the wickets and have a real blitz in the last 20 overs.
County cricket at its very best.
PS Good luck to all the usual Hammers fans here!

Wheels coming off! Roy and Reindeer fall in successive overs to the wise beyond his years Dockrell.
103 - 3. 202 more needed. 57 overs left.

Surrey's tail held us up in the first innings, it's up to Dockrell and the experienced member of our attack in Philander to make sure that doesn't happen again.

184 - 6 at tea.
121 more runs needed. 36 overs (I think) left in the day.
Very difficult for us to get a win from here although Hyphen is still there on 44 and gives us a speck of hope.
3 wickets so far to Dockrell who looks the more likely match winner.

Fascinating stuff.
98 to win. 4 wickets left. 23 overs (probably) to go.

Keep it going and keep in for now. Reassess with a dozen overs left.

Re: surrey vs somerset match thread
Philander back on to bowl 6 of the last 11 overs.
At the other end, Dockrell has bowled unchanged since just after lunch.
More than 80 for us to win so Hyphen and now Lewis trying to bat the day out. Meaker and Edwards left to come.
County cricket at its most exciting best.

Re: surrey vs somerset match thread
For the second game in a row, Surrey have made life harder for themselves by conceding shedloads of extras. 70-22 v Worcs and now 51-30 with about 10 overs to go against Somerset.
If we'd been able to declare 10 overs earlier v Worcs, and had 270 to chase instead of 300 here against Somerset, you can't guarantee anything would be different but both games would have looked subtly different on the 4th day.

good point simon 18 nb in the 2nd innings is shocking off 58 overs when you think somerset only had 4 in 104 oversSimonofSurrey wrote:For the second game in a row, Surrey have made life harder for themselves by conceding shedloads of extras. 70-22 v Worcs and now 51-30 with about 10 overs to go against Somerset.

Still 3 wickets remaining. Floodlights on. 5 overs left in the match and Philander takes the new ball. Will Dockrell remain on at the other end?

Re: surrey vs somerset match thread
239 - 7 off 84.4 overs as captains shake hands on a draw.
Brilliant rear guard action by Hamilton-Brown. Once Roy, Rudolph and de Bruyn went in quick succession after lunch it was always very much in Somerset's hands. We did very well to wrestle a draw, particularly remembering back to a dreadful day one.
Fantastic bowling earlier in the day from Meaker who must attract further interest from the England selectors.
I can't see either Edwards or Jordan being selected for next week's CC match against Warks. Dernbach will certainly come in and possibly Linley or a batsman. If we look to strengthen the batting, could be one of Spriegel, Lancefield and Burns.

I now see that Zafar Ansari is back from university and in tomorrow's CB 40 squad. If he's available for next week's CC match, he must come into contention.guildfordbat wrote:

Re: surrey vs somerset match thread
Well Meaker did brilliantly didn't he? Lord Barran said that his performance on a flat pitch was the best he'd seen in 5 years of commentary or something along those lines, superb stuff.
As for the run chase I thought we did everything right, went for the win until the middle order collapsed and then just made sure we didn't lose from that point, well done to Batty and Hyphen for a solid finish - that's 50+ in every second innings from Hyphen now but pretty much no first innings runs. I make it 43 first innings runs and 416 in the second - I've never seen anything quite like it!

Interesting to note his 70 from 161 balls yesterday proves he can play 'sensibly' and has a defensive game, I'm really impressed with him this season.
