Low handicappers and their 'ways'
Warming up for the second round of the club champ this morning i was blanked 4 times when i said hello to some fellow competitors. My first time reaching this stage so i obviously didn't realise beforehand that you have to prepare for these things in silence, distractions such as friendly greetings cannot be tolerated.

barragan, that sort of thing is exactly why I gave up being a member of a club or playing in competitions.

Yep, have to say this is (was) my pet hate about golf clubs, I just don't see the need for it.

Never come across that sort of behaviour in a club in ~35 years. Peculiar.

Re: Low handicappers and their 'ways'
Got to say I've never come across it either and I'm a member at 2 clubs and both are as friendly as you like. Got to say as well that both clubs contributed significantly to the Wiltshire team that won the English counties championship last year...so clearly, from a performance point of view, there's nothing wrong in playing/developing your golf in a friendly club atmosphere. Feel free to tell that to the miserable gits who woudn't say hello Barragan.
Speaking of miserable, that was me last night after shooting 85 in the morning and 84 in the afternoon in our club champs Was carrying in such good form as well. Shocking start with a raspberry ripple on the first which didn't help.
However if I thought a triple was bad....one guy took a 23 (yes a twenty three) on the first. Poor guy took 16 to get out of a bunker, when asked how he managed a 23, the simple reply came back "I missed a putt for a 22". He did complete his round without NRing though and at the main presentation out on the Lawn the story was regailed and he was presented with a bottle of his favourite Port to much cheeers and applause.

16 to get out of a bunker...
Must be a deep one...
Mind you, if he took 23, even including 16 to get out of the bunker, there was another 7 shots thrown in there somewhere.

Suppose it depends on where the 16th from the bunker ended up George. By that time I'm guessing he was very frazzled and was probably aiming at the wrong green with the next shot.

Re: Low handicappers and their 'ways'
I occasionally play with a low handicapper who hates anyone being anywhere near his eye-line when putting. You can be 10, 15, 20 yards away and at 45 degrees from from him, but if he sees you he'll ask you to move.
I know his ways and make sure I'm well out of the way, but the caddies we use are just bag carriers and don't understand the finer points of golfing etiquette. I'm finding it distracting worrying about what my caddie is doing and where she is going instead of concentrating on my own game.

to be fair, the two guys i was paired with were excellent company. i was just taken aback by the consistent rudeness of the few who were warming up on the range - pathetic really. never come across that before. oblivion is obviously part of their 'getting in the zone' routine.

Re: Low handicappers and their 'ways'
I can understand that some people like to prepare "their way" for a major comp, but there is no excuse for ignoring anyone. Would "good morning" break their concentration irrevocably for the rest of the day? Ridiculous!
I also have never come across such ignorance in 35 plus years of club life.

I was warming up for the club championship at duddingston yesterday morning chatting to the other guys , when this complete bell end turned up. I decided to blank him, felt a bit bad when 3 other guys blanked him too. We all continued to warm up in silence until he finished and when he had gone we all continued chatting again.

Lol no it was Wrag Doon....have you got a garden up there too?....more arboretum than garden to be honest :-/
The Loughrey boys turned up....so everyone else was playing for 3rd basically. Ben won it with 140 despite an 8 on 15. Josh was 2nd on 143. Best net was a 12 handicapper on 129.

Big hand to the guy who had the 23 and didn't NR. And despite this his handicap would have only gone up 0.1!

289....believe it or not I think he may have buffered if the CSS is 1above where it usually is. Re the not NRing, I think that's why the competion committee decided on the bottle of port, especially as it was the first hole and only a mere 407 yards from the comfort of the bar, he could easily have walked off but didn't.

For me, low handicappers are somewhere between a cockroach and that white stuff that accumulates at the corner of your mouth when you're really thirsty.

Won't argue with that super, spuds are the most delicious and versatile of all veggies and I love 'em. I hope to give haggis a try some time even though it doesn't sound very appealing.

I've never eaten Haggis, and never will. Lips and A-hole is what it is.

Re: Low handicappers and their 'ways'
Was en Ecosse very recently and tried haggis for the first time. I liked it. I paid no attention to the constituent parts and dived in.
Lips and poo rings? That's the staple of a good old british sausage too isn't it? They're damn good too.

I've never seen any correlation between handicap and being a richard or having "ways" as you describe.
I like haggis..and spuds. That's all.. carry on.

Ah, a film quotation. Then again, still might reflect your feelings on the matter. Obviously I meant 'twit'; what else could I have meant?incontinentia wrote:Lighten up guys, it's a quote from the film Con Air.

not sure what the problem with haggis is super - its a great decongestant... and laxative... perhaps we ought to consult tarka at this junction?

Re: Low handicappers and their 'ways'
I bear no ill will against low-handicappers, however I have found them to be quite clique-y. As with any clique they are wary of outsiders and newcomers, and can project the vibe of being cold and aloof.

Re: Low handicappers and their 'ways'
Maybe but again, never come across it (as a general rule) with anyone that I know who'd be classed as a 'low-handicapper'.
I've found much worse in people who really, really want to be a low (say, sub-8) handicapper and think that'll make them respected somehow or think they're better than their handicap suggests they are.
We used to call them the Pro-shop Mafia where I took the game up as they seemed to think that if they were 'mates' with the pro, that somehow meant they were a 'player' - a right pain in the backside. Quite often had all the gear but the proverbial 'no idea' to go with it. Never their fault they had a bad round; always the greens or some other rubbish.
Stereotyping much the same I know but hey ho!

Some players at my club almost try to make you feel guilty for being a decent player.

i actually think the clique think is probably the case in this circumstance. even at the matchplay last night i felt like i didn't belong as i was obviously a new kid on the block. now i've shown face in these stages i'm sure i'll be recognised and more accepted in any future stumblings into the gross boys group.
