Re: Aviva Premiership Round 5 - Preview
Massive game for us Friday night. We really need to twin and build upon what we did well against Bath on Saturday. We looked a lot more dangerous ball in hand than we have done previously, but our penalty count was way too high and if it is similar against Worcester I can see them punishing us through Andy Goode's boot!

I think Worcester may just have too much at home, especially as they have started to attack as well as kick. Worcester will be desperate for a first win, while Irish desperate to ensure they can at least build on last week's performance.

Re: Aviva Premiership Round 5 - Preview
If our pack can match theirs, then I think we have more behind it than they do, but it will be a tough game for sure. Having iHumph fit again is massive for us as Shingler is not up to playing 10 in the AP just yet, but is very good at 12.
My early predictions for this week are Saints, Bath, Tigers, Quins and Gloucester, although this may change once teams are announced.

Went for all the home teams, bar Glaws away at Welsh. Although, can see Irish winning too. Tough one to call, went with home advantage.

Saints- No one's really talked about Saints yet but they're on a roll of their own and seem to have a well balanced team capable of the very worst ugly rugby but also some lovely running stuff as well. I think their pack is going to man shame Wasps this weekend and in front of a (I assume) packed FG's their backs should be remorseless. Only issue as always for the club is fly half. Saints by 12
Irish- Worcester have been trying to mix up their game a bit this season but still look too limited for LI, if the Exiles can just get parity up front then their backs should be able to do enough to get the win, it might not be that pretty though. LI by 5
Bath- Bath have been looking pretty poor so far but luckily for them Sale are far worse. Bath by 3
Leicester- After the humiliation at the hands of the Cheifs last season expect a strong showing from Tigers. Ex should put up a fight though and make things tough, especially if Tigers can't work out how to pass still. Tigers by 7.
Saracens- I just have a bad feeling about this game, with our injuries in the backs it'll play in to Saracens kick and chase game plan and we haven't been quite clinical enough yet to counter that. Saracens by 3.
Welsh- A few games back I'd have said a bp win for Glos but now i'm not so sure, Welsh have stunned everyone so far and Glos are well known for their problems with the new clubs. Welsh by 5

Can Welsh really make it 3 on the bounce?
Think Glos pack will have too much for them and if Glos backs get good ball they can do real damage. Would really open the league up if Welsh won though, would put huge pressure on Sale, especially if Irish won at Worcester which I think they will.

OP updated with Friday teams (excluding LI replacements). Did something happen with Paice's ban? I thought he was out till next month at least.

No, was a 7 week ban so included pre-season matches, so made his return against Bath as a sub. Good player to have back, especially as it looks like Lawson is injured.

On paper Irish have the stronger side but Worc away on a Friday night isnt easy. Fancy us to sneak it though.
Londontiger Paice was back last week, he had a 5 week ban or something but think it included pre-season friendlies

London Irish defence has been at sixes and sevens this season - struggling to adapt to the Edwards rush?
The Worcester 3/4s will stretch them a lot more than a conservative Bath did. To me the teams look evenly matched with home advantage giving the Warriors the win.
The other game is interesting. Will be fun to see how this years fan's favourite Launchberry goes against the 2010 version, Lawes. Their England careers may be in the second row, but tomorrow they play at 6. Haskell v Wood another intriguing match up.
Wasps look strong on paper - but Saints have been greater than the sum of the parts this season and should be fairly comfortable winners.

It looks very clear cut this weekend.
So expect thrills, spills and plenty of upsets.

I think it is fair to say that it is taking the players some time to adapt to the system that Edwards wants in defence, but there are also two other issues that were evident in the first three games which weren't there against Bath on Saturday.
1. We had Matt Garvey back. Defensively that is massive for us. His tackle count and workrate are always high and he won the award for best defensive player at the club last season. Simply having him on the field will improve us in that area.
2. Midfield defence. In the first 3 games we had Losi at 12, and whilst as an attacking threat he offers something there, defence has never been his strong point. He missed a few first up tackles in each game which often put us on the back foot and cause gaps elsewhere as we had to scramble to recover. Shingler was much more solid there and made a big difference for us.
As long as we reduce our penalty count I think we will cope ok with what worcester can throw at us.

he isnt match fit, and has only featured for about 10 minutes, so cant comment yet.
Humphreys had a good debut though and we looked a lot more dangerous and structured with him pulling the strings at 10. linked up well with TOL at 9.

Northampton v Wasps
Massive trap game for Saints. Wasps could easily pull the upset, but I think Mallinder will have explained to his team the need to close out opponents early. And keep them closed out. Most likely using some simple friendly four letter words. Saints by a dozen or more.
Worcester v London Irish
Irish have to win to keep the season from going off the deep end. Worcester have to win to avoid the bottom of the table. I think this is tight as a drum. London Irish by 3.
Bath v Sale
Bath is not playing terribly good at the moment. Good news for them is Sale is in worse shape, but I think are better than their record. Should be close as well. I think Sale in an upset. By 7.
Leicester v Exeter
Is Exeter crashing back to earth? Is Leicester as boring as they showed against Sarries? Hope not for the sake of both teams. Leicester wins at home by 10.
Harlequins v Saracens
Another match of the weekend (on paper). Sarries will try to bore Quins to stupifaction. But Quins are at home and win by 2.
London Welsh v Gloucester
Gloucester are going to win this going away. Early season of joy for Oxford/London Welsh turns to a long cold winter of sadness (plus a parachute payment at the end of the season).

Re: Aviva Premiership Round 5 - Preview
Some slightly easier calls this week I feel.
Saints will have too much forward power for Wasps at home and will win by 10.
Having seen both Wuss and Irish play this season I feel the home advantage will be the edge and Wuss will win by 5.
Bath v Sale is the real banana skin of the round. Neither are playing well and it'll be a close win to one of them... but I'll go for the draw.
Leicester will want to prove a point after being humbled by Quins and they'll win by 9.
Quins have well and truly disproved the notion they only had a good start last season due to the World Cup. Whilst I still rate Sarries I don't think they are as good a side as when they won the Jeff and Quins will win by 7.
At the start of the season every game against Welsh was going to be a 5 pointer to the other side. Glaws are going to rip a side apart when the backs finally click, but it won't be on Sunday. But i can see Glaws grinding out a sneaky win by less than 3.

C'mon mate. You guys are going to have a vintage Glawster performance. Win by 20. Have faith. You played a nice game last week and I think you build on that. It's my Saints I worry about this week. This Wasps group is unpredictable and if we are not careful......HongKongCherry wrote:............At the start of the season every game against Welsh was going to be a 5 pointer to the other side. Wasps still have a pretty poor scrum and maul though Dr, which will play right in to those nasty Saints hands!
I expect it to be pretty ugly (unless you're a forward) and Saints to win comfortably.

I watched the London Irish v Bath game replay last night, I have to say, I was impressed with Garvey. Thought he put in a great, mature performance. Only thing is his fitness looked like it could be a little better. I know he's just come back from injury, so that is understandable. Looking forward to watching him this season, and hoping for an inclusion in the Six Nations EPS if all goes well...

Leicester are anything but boring, however, Sarries have the ability to drag everyone they play down to their level in order to grind out results. That's what happened (apart from the fact it was a draw of course).

Jimpy,
I was having a bit 'o fun. I agree Sarries have the inate ability to make watching paint dry look exciting.
I do think Wasps have the ability to upset almost anyone the way they are playing. Credit Dai Young for that. For Saints, if they keep it tight and be patient with ball in hand they should be fine.

Wasps have the ability to scare teams - but 3 losses in 4 matches gives real meaning to where they are.
Rest of the teams will be avilable soon. I have to go to a very important **cough** business meeting this afternoon, so will be late in updating the OP.

Jimpy wrote:doctor_grey wrote:Northampton v Wasps
Leicester are anything but boring, however, Sarries have the ability to drag everyone they play down to their level in order to grind out results. That's what happened (apart from the fact it was a draw of course).
There you go again. How many tries did Leicester score against Quins? 0 tries in two games is not exciting. It shows that against good defences the Tigers are toothless. At least you can comfort yourself that you can score tries vs Worcester and London Welsh, two of the AP powerhouses.
If Farrell hadn't been so woeful with the boot Leicester would have lost.
Also I was bored to death when watching Bath vs Saints. When Saints are boring as sin it is gritty and heroic is it?
Saracens have not had the monopoly on boredom this season. Pot calling the kettle black springs to mind.

Re: Aviva Premiership Round 5 - Preview
I wondered how long it would take. I've just won a bet at work, I said it would be before midday, my colleague said nobody could be that sad.
Course, as usual, you've chosen to ignore anybody else making perceived anti-Saracens comments, like Dr Grey, and decided to have a go at me instead. Do Saracens know that you're their sole representative on 606? I bet if they did, they'd change the locks...

That would be nice, but Glaws have a habit of self-destructing away from home. Whilst this season we've had 2 very encouraging results away, I don't want to get carried away. As for Saints, stick up your jumper and maul it the whole way then you'll easily beat Wasps!

As for the Glaws side, here it is:
Rob Cook; Jonny May, Mike Tindall, Billy Twelvetrees, James Simpson-Daniel; Freddie Burns, Dan Robson; Nick Wood, Huia Edmonds, Rupert Harden; Tom Savage, Jim Hamilton (capt); Peter Buxton, Andy Hazell, Sione Kalamafoni
Replacements:
Koree Britton, Dan Murphy, Shaun Knight, Will James, Akapusi Qera, Dave Lewis, Henry Trinder, Martyn Thomas
Most changes are injury forced. The Duke went off against Wasps (haven't heard how bad) but I really rate Edmonds. I would have liked D'Apice to be on the bench, but Britton is a unit to have come on! Morgan has a dead leg, which gives us the opportunity of seeing K at 8 and a welcome return for Bucko. So very happy with the pack and we've got a great bench to bring on.
The only decision I find odd is dropping Trinder back to the bench. He had by far his best game of the season against Wasps, so i would have liked him to play to keep building the partnership with 36.

Quins team is up:
Harlequins team to face Saracens
Harlequins have named the team that will play Saracens in round 5 of the Aviva Premiership at The Twickenham Stoop on Sunday (kick-off 2.00pm).
There are two changes to the starting line-up of the team that defeated Leicester Tigers last week at Welford Road. Among the backs, Seb Stegmann comes in for the injured Tom Williams and in the forwards, Tom Guest starts at blindside flanker, with Maurie Fa'asavalu covering from the bench.
With Ross Chisholm unavailable through injury for up to eight weeks, Ollie Lindsay-Hague is named among the replacements from where he will hope to make his first appearance as a senior squad member following promotion from the Academy this season.
Mo Farah will be present at The Stoop on Sunday to help raise money for the Mo Farah Foundation. The double Olympic gold medallist will be interviewed on the pitch at half time and will be participating in numerous activities throughout the day.
The Harlequins ticket office will be open on Saturday between 9:30 -2pm for Sunday ticket enquires and general sales. To purchase a ticket for Sunday's match against Saracens please call 0208 410 6000.
On Sunday, the ticket phone lines will be open between 9-11am with the match day ticket office open between 12:00 - 14:15.
Harlequins team
15. Mike Brown
14. Seb Stegmann
13. Matt Hopper
12. Jordan Turner-Hall
11. Ugo Monye
10. Nick Evans
9. Danny Care
1. Joe Marler
2. Joe Gray
3. James Johnston
4. Olly Kohn
5. George Robson
6. Tom Guest
7. Chris Robshaw
8. Nick Easter
Replacements
16. Rob Buchanan
17. Mark Lambert
18. Will Collier
19. Charlie Matthews
20. Maurie Fa'asavalu
21. Karl Dickson
22. Rory Clegg
23. Ollie Lindsay-Hague
Amazed to see JTH in the starting line up but fair enough it makes our midfield D a lot better then any of his replacements stepping in. Glad to see Guest is starting, Mo looked a bit lazy in the last televised games so hopefully a bit of bench time will do him good.
On the Rugby Club the Quins coaches were saying how Wallace is chomping at the bit to get in the first team so hopefully after this game we'll see a bit more rotation and he'll get his chance.
Not sure about Stegmann starting, I still remember his woefull performance against Saracens in the BG last season, Smith or Lindsay-Hague would have given more security.
I guess the 'knock' that Lowe took is a little worse then first thought as Hopper's in there again, not a problem though as he can be electric.
COYQ's!!!!!!!!!!!
