India v England, 3rd Test, Eden Gardens Kolkata - Page 9 Empty India v England, 3rd Test, Eden Gardens Kolkata

Post by msp83 Tue 04 Dec 2012, 5:47 pm

First topic message reminder :

The third test of the series is getting underway at the historic Eden Gardens tomorrow. The series is at one all after 2 tests.
Eden usually is an intimidating place for touring teams. The crowd turns up large, although not on the scales of earlier times and it usually has the effect of India playing with 12. Could be an experience in itself for all players involved.
In the runup to the test, the pitch has been quite a talking point with the CAB curator engaging with a public spat with the Indian captain. Although the Eden wicket has lost some of its old spark, it has been producing results, often in the last session of the match. A used pitch will be used for the match and spinners might find some turn. How much of bounce will be available, has to be seen though.
The other factor could be the timing. In the eastern parts of the country, light fades early in winter and so the match will have a half an hour early start. Might just be of a bit of interest to the seam bowlers. Artificial lighting will be used if required.
On the team front both teams have things to think about. Harbhajan Singh got a national recall without doing much to deserve it, and his bowling in the Mumbai test was nothing spectacular. Seemingly he has some health concern and didn't train today. Anyways it is unlikely India would go in with 3 spinners on this track. Umesh Yadav is not fully recovered as yet, so Ishant Sharma should get his chance here. Yuvraj Singh too had some injury concerns following getting hit on the arm during training, but he seems to be OK.
For England, Ian bell is back from leave. Jonny Bairstow didn't make compelling case to take over from Bell, so the senior man should be back. Remains to be seen whether that would be at the expense of Bairstow or Samit Patel. There have been indications that Stuart Broad who has had an inneffective series so far is in line to be replaced by a fit again Steven Finn.
No major worries with the weather at this stage.

Who would have predicted an innings defeat at 86/0, some odds then, especially on such a good batting track.

skyeman wrote:It's a shame that Monty will probably be dropped for Broad for NZ, Finn taking his chance well.

Problem for Monty is that England will normally want to play three seamers in most matches outside the sub continent - sensibly enough , it works. So unless Swann takes a series off for a rest he is unlikely to get much of a chance until they come back to these parts.

No question Monty is a much improved bowler , his success here is not just down to the rather poor Indian efforts of late , but I am not sure that he would bring enough to the team to justify changing the shape to accommodate a second spinner in other places...

Bit unlucky just there though ...Prior usually hangs onto those.

come on england win by an innings!

that would be the perfect mathmatical increase for the series.

india win by 9
england win by 10
england win by an innings..

however! cook probally wants to get in to improve his average abit!!

Ninth wicket proving difficult ...once again Ashwin showing almost more with the bat than with the ball , as he did in Australia last year.

New ball not too far away ?

Ishant reminded me of peter such - I think against west indies in the 90's? England were being battered and he batted 50 odd balls for 0 and got the loudest cheer of the day while someone else did the scoring at the other end.

I am not sure the Indian equivalent of " outraged , of Brighton " will be mollified ... but yes.

Still would like a result this evening. Extra half hour is possible , but they'll need the wicket soon.

this has been good from England but Ashwin is destroying them now.

If he gets them past 100 lead then I fear England could yet bottle this one.

he's just making a mockery of the bowling.

I want to pose a question,

This fellow Ashwin looks and plays like a number 6/7. For me he's kinda wasted at 8/9. He's also a considerably better batsman then so called all rounders Philander, Broad, Johnson etc

So why are India NOT man enough to bat him at 7?

Yuvraj is clearly rubbish at Test level. Dhoni should man up and bat at 6 or quit and allow a different wk to bat at 6.

If Ashwin plays at 7. Then India can select 5 bowlers.

India can actually still win this test match. If the last wicket can build a lead of over 100 for India, England could collapse sepectacularly in the 4th innings just as they did V Pakistan in the UAE at the start of the year.

I agree with you Gerry, Ashwin is a very talented batsman and seriously should be put up the order. Even if it is to simply try once or twice to see how he goes. A tremendous talent.

That final session was a bit disappointing... seemed a bit fatigued I think. Could have been an idea to give KP a bowl, or even Patel.

Anyway. India have big issues.

To change things drastically probably isn't right ahead of a Test which they need to win. But Rahane has to play, and a couple really have to go.

The problem is slotting Rahane in. I'm no Gambhir fan, but in fairness to him he hasn't been the worst in this series. Yuvraj is probably therefore the only one of the top 6 you can drop at this stage.

I don't know whether it would be fair to go Sehwag, Rahane, Pujara, Gambhir, Kohli, Tendulkar. Tendulkar obviously isn't a number six, but I really don't want to compromise Rahane by batting him at six.

I'd also swap Dinda for Sharma.

I guess he can't go much worst than either of Tendulkar, Kohli, Yuvraj and Dhoni...

Although those massive egos might not allow it.

If Tendulkar isn't at 4, he doesn't play.

He's batted at 4 for 15 years? Time has run out.

Rahane at 4. Problem solved.

England looked a bit tired in the last session. They've spent a lot of time in the field in the series and they just looked a bit jaded, their intensity dropping. Not a problem for this Test, but the bowlers must be praying Cook wins the toss in the last Test.

For India, they have to drop Yuvraj, sorry but he's just never looked convincing in Test matches, though there wasn't anything he could do about today's dismissal. Also Zaheer Khan should be batting 11.

Then of course there's the issue of what pitch India prepare for the final Test. If (as seems more than likely) they go in 2-1 down, they need a result, so do they go for a turning pitch, hope Dhoni's luck holds with the toss, and hope their spinners find something? I think they probably have to, but...
