India v England, 3rd Test, Eden Gardens Kolkata - Page 2 Empty India v England, 3rd Test, Eden Gardens Kolkata

Post by msp83 Tue 04 Dec 2012, 5:47 pm

First topic message reminder :

The third test of the series is getting underway at the historic Eden Gardens tomorrow. The series is at one all after 2 tests.
Eden usually is an intimidating place for touring teams. The crowd turns up large, although not on the scales of earlier times and it usually has the effect of India playing with 12. Could be an experience in itself for all players involved.
In the runup to the test, the pitch has been quite a talking point with the CAB curator engaging with a public spat with the Indian captain. Although the Eden wicket has lost some of its old spark, it has been producing results, often in the last session of the match. A used pitch will be used for the match and spinners might find some turn. How much of bounce will be available, has to be seen though.
The other factor could be the timing. In the eastern parts of the country, light fades early in winter and so the match will have a half an hour early start. Might just be of a bit of interest to the seam bowlers. Artificial lighting will be used if required.
On the team front both teams have things to think about. Harbhajan Singh got a national recall without doing much to deserve it, and his bowling in the Mumbai test was nothing spectacular. Seemingly he has some health concern and didn't train today. Anyways it is unlikely India would go in with 3 spinners on this track. Umesh Yadav is not fully recovered as yet, so Ishant Sharma should get his chance here. Yuvraj Singh too had some injury concerns following getting hit on the arm during training, but he seems to be OK.
For England, Ian bell is back from leave. Jonny Bairstow didn't make compelling case to take over from Bell, so the senior man should be back. Remains to be seen whether that would be at the expense of Bairstow or Samit Patel. There have been indications that Stuart Broad who has had an inneffective series so far is in line to be replaced by a fit again Steven Finn.
No major worries with the weather at this stage.

Trott with a good catch of Panesar to get Gambhir for 60.

Virat Kohli too has been a but out of form in this series, what can he do here. India would really need the young man to play a good hand here.

The England bowlers have been very much on top of Indian batting in the session after lunch. Neither Tendulkar nor Kohli are looking comfortable out there. Panesar and Anderson are doing an excellent job here.

Superb over here from Anderson, 3 balls he beat Tendulkar, the 4th was edged away for 4.

A tossed up ball from Panesar keeping low and beating everyone. Uneven bounce on the first day, although not many are climbing big. But some have really kept low.

Another one goes, Kohli this time. Terrific, terrific bowling from Anderson, he did deserve a wicket after that last over, its not Tendulkar, its Kohli, but a big wicket nevertheless. India in big big trouble, 136-4. A struggling Yuvraj Singh to join Tendulkar now. Swann time?

Yuvraj with a close call for LBW going his way of Anderson. Have to say he was lucky there. Fabulous spel from Anderson this, the best he has bowled in this series, in fact the best he has bowled in some time!. Terrific, absolutely terrific. On another day, he would have had 3 or 4 wickets by now.

Anderson's really coming on strong on foreign surfaces.

Fantastic effort from England considering this pitch was supposed to be dead.

Another close shout for LBW against Yuvraj, this time from Swann. Yuvraj again gets away with a very close call, and then responds with 2 back to back boundaries of Swann.

That first LBW looked more out, the 2nd on review would have remained umpire's call. Lucky Yuvraj, very lucky indeed. Will he make it count?

Fair play to Sachin hes finaly getting something resembling runs.

England have to be happy with the days work so far, two out of form mid order batsmen and a faded keeper batsman then into the bowlers.
I still fancy someone will make a decent score and India to reach 400 though

PSW, 400 is a very long way away. Neither of the batsmen are looking very comfortable out there, and Dhoni has had 2 tests where he did not much of note with the batt.

So , just four down at tea. After that patch in the middle of the session , I think India will be rather relieved not to have lost any more wickets.
Yuvraj perhaps fortunate to still be there , but Sachin , after a watchful start , is now playing pretty well.

Excellent bowling from Monty and Jimmy in particular.

Honours for the day still to be decided...

Sachin has been very jammy so far. England's day so far, the pitch is pretty lifeless and we've extracted 4 wickets. 3 more wickets in the last session would be brilliant.

Oh, Yuvraj has given it away. England right back in it. Swann gets him, but a soft dismissal, punching it straight to cover. Disappointing from Yuvraj, he had all the luck going his way, then got off to a start, Tendulkar at the other end was just finding a bit of control, and now Yuvraj has given it away.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni needs to step up here, big time.

Tendulkar gone, caught behind for 76. Good innings from Sachin, but India needed a great deal more from him as well as the rest of the lineup.
England very much in charge here. India well and truly slipping. MS Dhoni needs to play a special knock here, 300 looking a long way away now.

Ravichandran Ashwin in at 8, he's one of the better number 8s with the bat in international cricket. But his running between the wicket is not of the top quality and he very nearly makes a mess of things. Thankfully, the ball not hitting the stumps.

Very unprofessional from India to have another near miss. Theyve rode their luck yet are still struggling.

Team needs to do some soul searching, its only the "passenger" using his OAP ticket thats bailed them out here.

Jimmy has bowled a few already , and is getting reverse...and the lights being on , who knows what the umpires would do ? Think we might continue with this one for a while...

big wicket for England late in the day. Just as Beefy is having a go at Cook for bringing Anderson on for a one over spell, Anderson duly slips one through the defenses and Ashwin is castled. "good captaincy" now says Beefy laughing
