v2 Forum Cricket Awards 2012 Voting Thread - Part 1: Limited Overs cricket
OK. Thanks for the suggested categories. To avoid us having to vote on too many things at once I think its best if we split it into three separate sets of voting: limited-overs this week, Tests and county cricket next week, and overall players and team of the year and most improved and newcomers the week after.
In this thread you don't have to vote on every category if you don't want to.
The categories for this week, with voting closing next Saturday, are as follows:
ODIs
ODI Batsman of the Year
ODI Bowler of the Year
ODI Team of the Year
ODI Achievement (innings, bowling spell, record, catch etc.) of the Year
Match of the Year
T20Is
T20I Batsman of the Year
T20I Bowler of the Year
T20I Team of the Year
T20I Achievement (innings, bowling spell, record, catch etc.) of the Year
Match of the Year
EDIT: If somebody could sticky this for the time being it would be much appreciated

I think on the ODI batsman of the year, there is not a great deal to debate.
It has to be Virat Kohli.

Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan have scored a few more runs than Kohli has managed, but they both played almost double the matches than Kohli did. Over a 1000 runs in 16 matches with 5 hundreds. One of those knock was the one where he destroied Lasit Malinga.

Those are fine stats for Kohli, but there are other candidates worth considering.
Amla has played only 10 games but averaged 84, and we also have Cook who has 3 100s in 15 games.
Kohli would probably have the edge though, given his stunning knocks at Adelaide and v Sri Lanka.

Re: v2 Forum Cricket Awards 2012 Voting Thread - Part 1: Limited Overs cricket
As far as the ODI bowler goes, I think it has to be a call between Lasit Malinga and Sunil Narine. Malinga, already an ODI great, tops the list of wicket takers with 47 wickets from 32 matches. But this hasn't been a top year for the Slinger, he has gone for quite a few and hasn't been as effective as he used to be.
Narine on the other hand has 34 wickets from 17 matches, and just as importantly, his economy rate is just 3.66.
There have been some good performances from the likes of Thisara Perera, Saeed Ajmal and Steven Finn, but for me Narine and Malinga have stronger cases, and the former has a particularly strong one.

Re: v2 Forum Cricket Awards 2012 Voting Thread - Part 1: Limited Overs cricket
South Africa again, have played fewer ODIs. I am sure AB's and Hashim's cases could have been strengthened with a few more knocks.
But as of now, Kohli has more than 1000 runs, 5 hundreds, 3 50s, an average of 73 and a strike rate of 94. Those are telling stats, and for impact needn't go anywhere else, other than that show against Malinga and co. Kohli scored 133 of 86 balls, and the Slinger went for 96 in 7 overs that day.
His highest score this year has been 183, an innings against Pakistan in the Asia Cup, of just 148 balls, and this is easily the highest score by anyone this year.

Re: v2 Forum Cricket Awards 2012 Voting Thread - Part 1: Limited Overs cricket
I agree with Kohli for batsman of the year, he's been superb. Amla would probably be second.
For bowler of the year, I'm not actually considering Malinga, his eco rate is poor (yes I know he bowls at tough times, but still), and his average ordinary. That he tops the wicket taking column is almost solely down to the fact that SL seem to have played twice as many ODIs as anyone else this year (I mean, Kulasekera is right up there in the wickets taken stats, but averages 40). Narine gets the nod for me, lots of wickets at a fine average (under 20) and a great eco rate. What more can you ask for?

I'd also say Kohli's 133 could be right up there for the ODI achievement award as well.

Think Marlon Samuels' brilliant knock has to be a clear frontrunner for the T-20I achievement of the year. Gayle has been quite consistent in T-20Is this year, who else could come into the mix for the T-20I batsman of the year?

Levi played that knock against NZ, but I reckon Samuels should be nailed on for T20 Achievement.
As a T20 batsman, you've got Gayle, and Shane Watson as main candidates I guess.

Re: v2 Forum Cricket Awards 2012 Voting Thread - Part 1: Limited Overs cricket
As far as T-20Is go, Brendon McCullum is the highest scorer for this year. Among the top 5, Virat Kohli has the highest average, Gayle the best strike rate. At the moment I am leaning towards Gayle for the T-20I batsman of the year, particularly considering some of his fine efforts in the world t-20, the effort in the semi was quite noteworthy.

As far as the T-20I bowlers go, Saeed Ajmal has 23 wickets from 14 matches with an economy rate under 6. Graeme Swann has 17 wickets from 12 matches, and again at an economy rater under 6.

Biltong I think what we have is an achievement award rather than specific ones for individual batting and bowling performances.
I would vote for Kohli in the ODI department, but for the 133 of 86 rather than the 183 that of course was a fine innings.
In T-20s, its Samuels in the World T-20 final.
Not really sure about the matches of the year in both the categories as yet. The West Indies New Zealand match in the World T-20 for T-20 match of the year?

ODI Batsman of the Year - Virat Kohli
ODI Bowler of the Year - Steven Finn
ODI Team of the Year - England
ODI Achievement (innings, bowling spell, record, catch etc.) of the Year - Virat Kohli against SL at Hobart and against Pakistan in the Asia Cup

T20I Batsman of the Year - Shane Watson
T20I Bowler of the Year - Mitchell Starc (very impressive in unhelpful conditions)
T20I Team of the Year - West Indies
T20I Achievement (innings, bowling spell, record, catch etc.) of the Year - Watson's 4 consecutive MOTM awards in the WT20, Samuels' innings in the World T20 final
Match of the Year - NZ vs WI and SL vs NZ - World T20
I've given the T20 awards purely on the basis of World T20 as bilateral T20s are utterly pointless IMO and I don't follow them quite as keenly anyway.

Very true, but all averages for all players would be down in all formats without the no's, the old argument again, he may have scored buckets more, then again he may have been out next ball.

OK, here goes:
ODI batsman: Kohli
ODI bowler: Narine
ODI team: England
ODI achievement: Finn's opening spell against Australia where he picked up 4 wickets (sorry for being biased, but haven't watched many other teams this year)
ODI match of the year: ?
T20 batsman: Watson
T20 bowler: Swann
T20 team: WI, by virtue of winning the WC I guess. No team has really been dominant in T20 this year.
T20 achievement: Mendis's 6 wickets were against hapless Zimbabwe, Samuel's knock was good but not that special (if it hadn't come in a final it would have got no mention), so going with Watson's 4 MOM in 4 games in the T20 WC.
T20 match of the year: has to be WI vs NZ at the WC.

Would love to vote but realistically my awareness of ODI's/T20s not involving England is fairly poor (Tests is a different matter)
Good example is a lot of people voting Kohli fo ODI batsmen - I had no idea he'd done well this year, there's just too much cricket to follow these days!

Dhoni's 2012 T20i ave of 86.00 just got a bit better, it's what you want from a player who sometimes comes in early, sometimes not, quick scoring and hard to get out.

ODIs
Batsman of the Year - Virat Kohli. The most 100s, and the innings of the year.
Bowler of the Year - Sunil Narine. Australia and NZ were both clueless against him. Bangladesh and England played him much better, but still just gets this ahead of Malinga, Finn and McKay.
Team of the Year - England. Haven't played all that much compared to some other teams, but seem to have cracked the formula for this format. Expect others to catch up next year, so England will need to keep moving forward.
Achievement - Kohli's innings against the NRR in Australia. Just sensational.
Match of the Year - A lot of one-sided ODIs this year to be honest, but the tied 3rd ODI between WI and Oz stood out. Played on a woeful pitch but all sorts of things going on. The type of match which is made by Tony Cozier's commentary.
T20Is
Batsman of the Year - Shane Watson was sensational in the World T20, and at the end of the day that's what matters.
Bowler of the Year - Saeed Ajmal has 6 more wickets that anyone else, and an economy rate under 6. Also often bowls at the death.
Team of the Year - WI. Not only for winning the World T20 (which wasn't entirely convincing, strangely), but also for their thumping wins over Australia and NZ.
Achievement - Marlon Samuels, for his knock in the final. Single-handedly won the tournament for his team.
Match of the Year - I thought both the ties at the WT20 were pretty poor matches actually. So I'm going for Pakistan and Australia's tie in Dubai.
