Laidlaw should tour and I would consider him as captain.

None of the potential SH are fantastic and he has as good a pass as any and better than Philips who is not an international SH IMO.
He has a calm head on his shoulders is a good tactician, never flaps, never gets the red mist, never takes a backward step. Care loses his temper, Youngs is brittle mentally, Philips is too slow.
There are no other outstanding candidates for captain

To go along with that Kelly Brown is well worth a place and arguments could be faound for a few more scots

how is it that after the Wales game BOD was being hailed as the only man who can captain the side and now he is in only a few guys' squads??? Early doors still but surprising.

Post by dummy_half Mon 25 Feb 2013, 3:27 pm

Well, I did a 38 man squad the other day and I don't think there are many changes based on this weekend's matches other than I understand Ferris has no hope of being fit and Ashton's aversion to tackling sees him drop down the pecking order.

If it's 38, I'm basing this on 2 starting XVs and a replacement bench, with the latter meaning a few 'versatile' picks .

LH - Healy, Grant, Corbs (Jenkins if Corbs unfit)

Hooker - Best, Ford, Youngs

TH - Cole, Jones, Ross

2nd row - Grey, Launchbury, Parling, Ryan, Ryan Jones* (covers 6 and 8 as well)

Flankers - Robshaw, Wood, SOB, Lydiate, Rennie (Brown and Tipuric respectively if not fit)

8 - Faletau, Beattie

9 - Youngs, Care, Phillips

10 - Sexton, Farrell, Flood

Centres - BOD, Tuillagi, Roberts, Scott, JD2

Back 3 - Hogg, 1/2p, Brown, North, Maitland, Bowe* (if fit, Earls if not - cover for 13 in emergency)

I love that Marshall has a 1 decent game in a badly losing side during which he fluffs a try scoring pass and all of a sudden he is going to Aus, and people say I have BSE because I'd rather pick players with a reputation of excellence who may be a bit off the boil

what all you form monkeys must remember is a Lions party has to have a fair proportion of former Lions in it, its not just about form

Why does it need former lions necessarily?

Does touring with the lions automatically mean you will be a better player then one who hasn't?

We are talking about guys who have gone on RWC's, large tours with their own country. This isn't the old days where the lions tours were the only large scale tours players went on.

In 97 only Evans, Gibbs, Guscott and Johnson remained from the 93 tour come the test matches.

SCW had the same idea when he brought along guys like Hill, Dillaglio, Back, Greenwood, Wilkinson. Players have to have some sort of form... they can't all re-create form of yesteryear. Its a fine balance.

This form monkeys squad has the grand total of 6 former lions..........not a lot of experience.
Just out of interest how many toured SA ? Not too many I think bearing in mind SCW doing a jolly boys outing in'05.

I'm not denying that earls wasn't very good but I think bringing a few young guys for the dirt trackers. I'm sure Halfpenny wasn't massively experienced in 09 either

Yes but Halfpenny never played. He got injured before the plane left. Earls doesn't deserve to clean the man's boots.

Earls was way over his head in 09 and was a ridiculous pick which looked very naive both at the time and in hindsight.

If a young kid is good enough though he's good enough... but lets not pick on future potential alone. We all recall the disaster which was the man management of Matthew Taits career.

Whether Halpenny played or not is not really the point, he was still there.

Regarding Earls, yes he wasn't very good, Marshall is an established player in one of Europes top teams and looked pretty good on his debut

Agree - we should be picking on what players have shown themselves capable of, but if they are good enough they are old enough. Would anyone really argue that Farrell or Tuillagi aren't good enough?

England are leading the 6Ns with a very inexperienced team - indeed, the starting XV against Ireland had about the same number of caps as BOD and ROG combined. Of our starting XV that day, only Haskell and Brown (surprisingly) had made their international debuts before the 2009 Lions were picked (Robshaw made his England debut in summer 2009 in the absence of the Lions players)

The Lions squad this time will probably be quite light in terms of former tourists because all the Home nations are to some extent rebuilding their teams, whether out of design (England, Scotland) or necessity (Ireland after their injury apocalypse), and some of the experienced guys (ROG, Kearney to a lesser extent) are not in much form.

Tuilagi and Farrell are playing and beating the best now. No argument on guys in similar position.

The argument was with guys on the fringes using the example of Keith Earls in 09... few or no caps by then, hardly tested and was an utter disaster.

Surprised no one picked up on your selection of 0 Irish Auk... Wanting the whole crew for the NA tour?

As much as I'd love them all on tour with a new coaching ticket of Schmidt, Gibbes, McLaughlin and Feek, on current form, and with those who are likely to recover from injury and play a part in the HC quarters/semis

UIG - no one picked up on it because it makes perfect sense!
Let's face it Healy can't be trusted to keep his cool, and even if he makes it Cole will arrange for Hartley to hit him in training.
Best was snubbed last time, his throwing has gone to pot, and if he did go Hartley would arrange for Cole to take him out in training
Ryan has been ok - is that enough to go?
POC is falling apart at the seams, last time they stitched him up they got some of the joins wrong.
Ferris (see POC) and apparently he was never as good as Croft and Lawes, never mind Wood, Lydiate, Jones etc.
SOB has been found out, is a penalty magnet and his one good season was against mediocre competition
Heaslip is a show pony
Murray is slower than Captain Slow drinking Sloe Gin and Shloer
Sexton can't kick 100% of his kicks, and wouldn't know anyone else in the team
Zebo would be the last name picked (alphabetically)
Luke Marshall has two Rabo starts and one Test start where he made two breaks and threw a bad pass - how desperate is Gatland?
BOD shouldn't be separated from his new baby, the compassionate thing would be to leave him at home
Bowe is recovering from injury so has shown no form whatsoever, how can he get picked ahead of players who are actually standing on two legs?
Kearney shouldn't go because I can't really bear to hear the Sky commentators call him Car-knee, and he hasn't stopped his running in treacle act yet

oops my bad, just meant halfpenny will start on wing but can cover fullback in the event of injury as to me Kearney hasn't shown any form.
in fact might be tempted to take foden or Brown as another wing/fullback

I knew as soon as Scotland won a game we would see lions squads with 12 Scots in it.

Half a dozen or a coule more to travel - maybe 3 in the test side sounds about right.

Hogg, Laidlaw, Visser, Maitland, Brown, Beattie, Gray, Hamilton ?????? Bold for the test team

Yeah, I think in reality they'll be lucky to get half that.

15 Hogg, Halfpenny, Brown
Wings Maitland, North, Zebo (if fit), Cuthbert
Centres Tuilagi, Davies, Roberts, Barritt, BOD (dirt tracker captain predominantly)
10 Farrell, Sexton, Biggar
9 Youngs, Phillips, Laidlaw
8 Faletau, Morgan, Beattie
7 Robshaw (c), Tipuric,
6 Wood, Brown, Lydiate (if fit) but more likely SOB.
5 Parling, Gray,
4 Launchbury, Ryan, Evans
3 Jones, Cole, Ross
2 Hibbard, Best, Youngs,
1 Corbs, Jenkins, Healy

I don't think Visser and Maitland will go, nor two Scottish locks. Laidlaw will probably luck out as Phillips is a cert as is at least one of Care and Youngs. The only test team starter I see is Hogg, as Halfpenny and North probably get the wing slots (if Gatland does start Hogg) and the backrow is ridiculously hard to call.

I more than likely wouldn't take Cuthbert or Lydiate at the mo, but I would wager Gatland will.

LH Prop - Healy, Jenkins, Grant
Hooker - Best, Youngs, Ford
TH Prop - Cole, Jones, Murray
Lock - Parling, Gray, Launchbury, Evans, Ryan
Blindside - Wood, O'Brien
Openside - Robshaw, Armitage
Eight - Faletau, Beattie, Heaslip

Scrumhalf - Youngs, Philips, Laidlaw
Flyhalf - Sexton, Farrell, Hook
Centre - O'Driscoll, Tuilagi, Roberts, Davies
Winger - North, Maitland, Cuthbert, Visser
Fullback - Hogg, Halfpenny, Kearney

Irish - 8
English - 10
Welsh - 11
Scottish - 9

Ireland's numbers suffering from injuries with O'Connoll, Ferris, Zebo and Bowe likely to have toured.

England's young players there on merit and numbers reflect that.

Wales still have a number of very effective players, especially in the backs.

Scotland have a few very handy players in their squad this season.

I think there's a stronger pool of players than in 09, more competition across the board with a lot of young guys putting their hand up which is exciting. But there's only 11 previous Lions in that squad and there aren't many others pushing for selection.

YOUR Lions squad - 38 player Empty Re: YOUR Lions squad - 38 player

First post on here guys so go easy!! Here goes:

Props: Healy, Corbisiero, Sheridan, Cole, Adam Jones, Murray
Hookers: Best, T Youngs,Hibbard
Second Row: Launchberry, Gray, A W Jones, Nathan Hines, Ryan Jones
Back Row: Wood, SOB, Robshaw, Morgan, Tipuric, Kelly Brown, Nick Easter
Scrum Half: Care, Youngs, Laidlaw
Fly half: Sexton, Farrell, Hodgson
Centres: JD2, Tuilagi, BOD, Barritt
Back Three: North, Halfpenny, Foden, Maitland, Gilroy, Brown, Hogg

Tried to get a blend between the form players and some who I see being stalwarts of the midweek side with the possibility of playing themselves into the test team, e.g Easter, Ryan Jones, Hodgson, Maitland, Laidlaw, Sheridan, Tom Youngs. Hopefully would create a really positive competitive environment with everyone pushing the Saturday side!!

Picked Ryan Jones as a second row to get him in the squad because of his versatility and leadership and is in great form. Hines is still quality and has one tour left in him I'm sure. Easter is in great form at the moment and provides ball carrying and real hard work in the right as well as offloading ability.

Charlie Hodgson getting his backline at sarries moving as well as anyone and would be thrilled to be a leader in the midweek side and get the chance to show what he has in the early games!

Farrell can cover centres in emergency, as can Laidlaw cover 10 and goal kicking if Hodgson is havin an off day.

Lots of fullbacks I know but all are such quality just had to pick them over the likes of Ashton and Cuthbert who aren't playing as well at the moment! Brown Foden Halfpenny can all comfortably play on the wing, as I think Hogg could be the test full back. George North can also be an emergency centre in the case of injuries.

Test team

1.Healy
2.Best
3.Cole
4. A W Jones
5. Hines
6. Wood
7. Robshaw (c)

17. Corbisiero
18.Adam Jones
19. Launchberry
20.SOB
21. Youngs
22.Sexton
23. Foden

Midweek
