Lockout back in Effect
First topic message reminder :
Well, this is annoying, but not unexpected. The 8th Circuit issued a stay, so the lockout is back on. The judges ruled 2-1 (2 Republican appointees versus 1 Democrat appointee if you're interested) in favor of the owners, who promptly told the teams to shut it down again. The dissenting judge said that stays are only really granted in emergency situations and the NFL had not proven it would be harmed in allowing the injunction to stay in effect till the court ruled on the case, but the other two obviously felt differently. This court is the most conservative appeals court and most of the judges are Bush appointees, so we'll see soon enough if the old boys network is in effect. I believe it will be the same 3 judges ruling on the appeal.

Re: Lockout back in Effect
Well it's good to see were getting somewhere. Wembley game should be on for sure.
I do think that this is a bit of a pressure move by the league to flip things back onto the players in terms of negative PR by setting such a rigid quick schedule for how things will progress from now. Almost a case of "they signed it last, they caused all delays (that may result from now)"
Loving the rookie wage system simply because it lowers those ridiculous numbers!
Also, classic Al Davis!

“Our recommendation is for everyone to stay put and keep doing what you are doing where you are doing it. We will meet again Monday to discuss our options and the direction we want to go. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us. Your player reps.”

Re: Lockout back in Effect
the players are in real danger of losing support here. They've said the owners have included things that havent been agreed on which i believe but there not being transparent and saying what these issues are.
Also i hate the way they just take the weekend off it sends a real bad message

Re: Lockout back in Effect
Both sides have been taking the weekends off from negotiations since the beginning, if as Mangler says it's a 200 page document it could be that they're going to use the weekend to look through it in detail and compare it to what they agreed in the negotiations to see what the owners are trying to sneak in.arizona_tom wrote:Also i hate the way they just take the weekend off it sends a real bad message

Re: Lockout back in Effect
"It's a very good deal for everybody involved," Hunt told The Associated Press. "It's a good deal for the players. It's a good deal for the National Football League. It's a good deal for our fans, in part because it's a long-term, 10-year deal. It is a good deal for the Chiefs. With this labor agreement, whether you're in a large or mid-sized market, everybody's going to have an opportunity to play for a championship."

With it being a 10-year deal, you definitely want to make sure you have all the details down before you sign on the dotted line.

Back out front of the NFLPA building. They're working inside. And we're waiting outside. Just in case.

Players are expected to ratify the deal Monday per ESPN.

Re: Lockout back in Effect
I wonder what happens with all the arrests that took place during the lockout? A Bills player was just arrested for DUI when his car hit a police officer. 24 players were arrested during the lockout.

Apparently the players and owners have agreed on all points and a deal is expected to be agreed today.

Re: Lockout back in Effect
IF they agree today, the union is expected to re-certify tomorrow and team activities are then cleared to start Wednesday. But there's an interesting article on NFL.com that highlights the issues the accelerated time scales now create:

@AlbertBreerAlbert Breer
According to numerous sources, teams for players and owners negotiated until 3 AM ET on Monday, agreeing to basic terms at that point. ...
@AlbertBreerAlbert Breer
... However, the deal is not 100 percent done. There are still small points in the language that need finishing, final review, etc.
@AlbertBreerAlbert Breer
... Expectation is NFLPA's exec comm will have final doc by noon, & vote. 32 player reps will be on a conf call, waiting to vote after that.
Seem's like the deal should be done at some point today.

Looks like we might actually be able to talk about football by the end of the week. Anyone remember what that feels like?
