How the start of summer has moved it's center of gravity from English counties to IPL........well captured by Mark Nicholas....who has adequately filled Roebuck's boots in the "poignant-n-nostalgic" cricket writing segment

In just a moment or two the county cricket season begins. This used to be a big deal but, as if we needed a metaphor for change, we have it with the start of the sixth Indian Premier League - a tournament that consumes the second-largest nation on the planet in a way that seemed inconceivable less than a decade ago.

The best players in the world once arrived in bitter England, swapping sandals for socks and discovering the cable knits of many county colours to be their closest ally. Now they head to India. It is a franchised game that pays the bucks and Kolkata Knight Riders who grab the headlines from Daredevils and Super Kings, Warriors, Indians and Royals. No more spring days in Nottinghamshire, Sussex or Somerset, and to think, from those three counties alone, English cricket had Hadlee and Rice, Imran and Le Roux, Richards and Garner.

The Virat Kohli led RCB are playing their first game today, against the Ricky Ponting led MI.
RCB are 95-5 at the moment. Unsurprisingly, Sir Christopher is shouldering their batting yet again, not out onf 54 at the moment. Kohli with a quick-fire 24 was the only support act.

Sir Christopher finished with a rather sedate by his standards 92 not out of 58 to carry his side to a respectable 156-5.
MI has a new and interesting opening combination. Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting!.

Despite the presence of some terrific batting power in their ranks, the RCB bowling unit is pretty average. Dan Christian opening the bowling for them!.

Tendulkar was run out after he looked good, now Ponting gone stumped of Murali Kartik. RCB are getting themselves back into the game after the 2 greats had given MI a fine start.
IPL specialist Rohit Sharma out in the middle.

It hasn't quite worked for Rohit Sharma today, gone bowled by Vinay Kumar after getting a bit of a start. We are so used to it from him but not so much in the IPL.

RCB wins!. Dinesh Karthik had almost taken it away from them through a garbage over from Dan Christian, but a fine 19th over from Jaidev Unadkat, and a superb last over from R Vinay Kumar who successfully defended 10 in the last over by taking out both Karthik and Rayudu of successive balls, have let their side walk away with a 2 run win.

I am rather very happy to see Glenn Maxwell's side lose. Not that I have something against Maxwell, but buying him for the huge amount, just didn't make sense then, and now he's benched, and they've lost.

If RCB doesn't play Vettori along side the other left-armer Kartik, then they should think of someone like Andrew McDonald who is a capable bat, and he's a better bowler than the overhyped Dan Christian.

Fair enough KPF, but Christian is good enough with neither bat nor ball. McDonald might have to bat 7 or something, but he's far more of a bowler, and in reality, a better bat as well.
We should see Vettori in action when they play in Chennai for sure?

As for today's match, I am particularly interested to see how the young SH all-rounder A Ashish Reddy would go about. He has been impressive at the domestic level, and had a pretty decent Ranji season with both bat and ball for Hyderabad.
Also hope Manish Pandey would find some form and comeback into national contention.
PW look the better side on paper.
White is one batsman who can play a decisive hand in the SH lineup, so can Thisara Perera.

Akshath Reddy doesn't seem the type who can really force the issue when needed. Think such players have to adopt a more positive approach from the outset itself.
Anyways, ones Shikhar comes back, he should be taking one of the places up front.

They need to find space for young Quinton de Kock when he joins the squad. Can bat anywhere in the order, and can certainly pack quite a punch with the bat.
Perera and Steyn have to play, Sanga gets in because he's the skipper. Then its between White, de Kock and Sammy, and I would favor Quinton.

SH have won by 22 runs despite putting up only 126 on the board. A combined effort from Thisara Perera who top scored with a quick 30, then took important wickets along with Amit Mishra. Then Dale Steyn finished it off, picking up 3 wickets in the 19th over, with PW skipper Angelo Mathews stranded at the other end.

well the pitch was not easy to score on...sluggish offering turn and trife variable bounce... and in the end 126 proved â comfortable win.

Mishra alwys impresses me and I feel eh should be the 3rd spinner for India after ashwin and Jadeja...and ahead of Bhajji defnitely and unfortunately Ojha also

2 matches today, the RR DD match is going on with RR batting at the moment. They are 48-1 at the moment, Kusal Perera the man out after playing a couple of fine shots, Umesh Yadav, who otherwise has been bowling real quick, got him with a slower one. Dravid and Rahane at the middle now.
As for the CSK game, Malinga had some fitness concerns for the last game, and even if he's fit, he won't be playing today as the Matche is to be played at Chennai.

Harsha on commentary notes that Rahul Dravid played Ranji Trophy with Rojer Binny in 1991, now he's playing with his son Stuart Binny in the IPL.
Binny just been bowled by Umesh Yadav, after he fired 40 of 20.

RR finishes with 165-7. Its been a pretty poor finish. Lost 4 wickets in the last couple of overs.
Good to see Umesh Yadav bowling real quick, and also getting the results, 4-24 for Umesh.

Another close finish. RR eventually winning by 5 runs.
Kevon Cooper with a superb last over. He had 8 runs to defend, and he managed to pitch all the 6 balls just about the right place, took out Johan Botha and Andre Russell, and gave away only 3 singles.
DD had the chase well covered needing 17 in the last 2 overs with David Warner going well, but then Warner was run out in the 19th over to a direct hit, after Manprit Juneja had got out of the last ball of the 18th. Even then, with the likes of Irfan Pathan, Russel, Both and Naman Ojha, DD were the favorites, but an incredible last over from Cooper, and a decent effort from Jarkhand youngster Rahul Shukla saw their side home.

The first match had a lot that made me happy. Dravid among the runs, Umesh Yadav among the wickets, a rather unknown Indian talent, in the form of Rahul Shukla doing well, and a close match.
CSK, RCB, RR, that is the order of my preference for this IPL.

MI won the toss and they are batting. Jacob Oram is out, and in comes Dwayne Smith. The centre of attraction in the last match, Jasprit Bumrah has given way to Pragyan Ojha.
Hussey, Bravo, Nannes and Laughlin the overseas players for CSK.
Chris Morris and Albie Morkel aren't available as yet, as they are playing the SA domestic T-20 tournament. Would really like to see Morris in there as soon as possible.

Ah well, Rohit doesn't last too long, Bravo gets him with his first ball, smartly caught by Dhoni for 8. Ambati Rayudu joining Karthik.

A brutal 57 not out of 38 from Kieron Pollard, and his unbeaten partnership of 65 with Harbhajan Singh (21 not out) has helped MI reach 148-6 in their 20 overs.
Dhoni got a lot of things right, but the last 2 overs leaked 28, and Dwayne Bravo ended up going for 44 in his 4 overs. He brought Ashwin into the attack rather, after the halfway stage, but the offy returned figures of 1-21 in his 4. Ravindra Jadeja bowled only 2 reasonably economic overs, and young Ankit Rajpoot also wasn't bowled out.
MI are without Slinga Malinga, but they have got a number of options with the ball.

CSK has already lost Vijay. But Hussey is still there, thanks to the MI fielders. First Rayudu, and Rohit Sharma, who seems to think he's playing for India rather than the Indians from Mumbai, have put down chances of Johnson's bowling.

CSK struggling at 58-4 at the moment. The Skipper has come out to the middle, to join Badrinath.

MI wins by 9 runs despite a lone hand played by the CSK skipper who smashed 51 of 26. MSD was out of the first ball of the last over, through a very special catch from Kieron Pollard and CSK couldn't see the chase through.

Dravid's like old wine..gets better with age....and playing with a freedom like not seen in his playing days.
actually of all the oldies her could be the last one to retire....SRT and Sehwag shuld have been the first to go.

Dhoni leaves too much for too late....to many times...in limited over games.

what's becoming evident..is that teams are not gelling as a team yet...becuase they haven't spent enuf time together...captains don't really known their resources well enough to use them optimally.

annd also that Unmukt chand can't play the moving ball....because of his leaden feet.

and take a bow to kevin cooper....another potential star born for WI from ipl.
cool ad a cucumber...steely nerves--solid temperament.....and his bowling reminds me of a young courtney walsh-

Dravid's team is most unchanged and RR are off the block fastest.

KPF, unfair to turn the guns of Dhoni for today's defeat. Had it not been for his knock, CSK wouldn't have even been in the frame. And he scored his 50 at almost 2 runs a ball. The blame has to go the rest of the batting lineup. None of them played a substantial hand, and none of them, other than Ravindra Jadeja, got off to at least a quick start. Dhoni came in after the half-way stage of the innings, and the RR hadn't touch 6 till then.
