First topic message reminder :

Thread for the build up & match Smile

New from the NZ camp is that BJ Watling's knee has ruled him out, meaning he'll join Bruce Martin on the sidelones. Brendon McCullum will keep wicket, while Martin Guptill will return to the side and bat #6.

Daniel Vettori trained well yesterday, so is expected to play in place of Martin

Likely NZ XI:
Fulton, Rutherford, Williamson, Taylor, Brownlee, Guptill, McCullum, Vettori or Bracewell, Southee, Wagner, Boult

Complete collapse from NZ, gonna take something special to avoid the follow on for them now!

Swann on fire! Taking full advantage of the NZers footmarks OK

Six wickets have gone down for 27. Wickets have tended to fall in clumps in this brief series - for both sides actually.

Wouldn't normally expect Swann to be the wrecker here , but those footmarks are placed very nicely for him...

It seems Jimmy will be waiting at least until the second innings to pass Fiery Fred.

The follow on. Presuming we get the chance, would you enforce it?

I cantt see a reason not to enforce it.

the last two days could be partial wash outs any way..

If they get NZ out before tea I would certainly send them back in. If they forced England to bowl a lot of overs one might think again : but realistically if they bat long enough to tire the bowlers out they'll be past the follow on target...

So the short answer is yes.

England doing well with drs in this game ...

Cook has judged his referrals much better than McCullum...bit of luck in it , to be fair , close decisions.

Broad always thinks they are out when he's bowling ...this time he is right Smile

Just McCullum and the rabbits now ...

great stuff.

BC maybe hugely lauded but england have him on a bit of a rope at the mo.

they looked to be building safely at 50 odd.

Engs 350 seemed good to me, even more so now.

Yes trebs. I wasnt really feeling the "England slightly edging it yesterday". To me it seemed like we battered them and did all we could in the circumstances!

The next two days could be wash outs. Therefore I was very happy we got out quick this morning and didnt get to 400(it would have taken to long!)

good lord, these two getting some luck and throwing it around a bit.

can they put us off the follow on by getting past it or just frustrating us so we don't have enough of a lead to risk it?

ok broad needs a rest.. he's one of those guys who you can smash out of the game and they have got in his head. swap him out.

These two are fairly clueless...fast and straight...or bring Finn back on.

was funny to see though but so much luck and swinging around and the odd good shot.

so i'd say don't follow on now. they've shown how easy it is out there. Use it, get some runs and then let them face a good total last innings.

Well I guess if it were to rain all Monday , Cook could declare overnight and bowl them out Tuesday...

I'd have enforced the follow on. But we don't know how his bowlers are feeling...think it will probably work out all right. And at least the spectators will get full value ( weather permitting) tomorrow.

i'd rather not bat last, I don't believe either sides bowlers are too likely to get the luck the kiwis did there again if trying to save the match with the bat.

just checked

I was wrong.

The rain has shifted to tuesday! not monday.

This must have been part of the reason in the lack of the follow on..

But in regards to your point. I would allways follow on.. 180 lead.. its a no brainer to me.

Yeah i'd have followed on too, but I guess the Top 4 have struggled for runs recently, so they want another innings before the Ashes as GSC says

Yeah the wish for another innings must be a factor but also if you can get another couple of hundred, if, then you have a massive lead and huge pressure.

That last partnership has given NZ life in this game though.

Not too sure about England batting again when they had the opportunity to enforce the follow-on. With the NZ batting not really clicking in this series at all, England should have gone for the kill right away. Hopefully this conservative move wouldn't turn the serious possibilities of an England win into a wash out draw.

I think England know the series is in the bag barring something very fluky anyway, so might as well let their top order have 1 more shot at it.

Fantastic bowling performance from Graeme Swann, and a fine performance from Finn as well. The last wicket stand between Boult and Wagner was quite entertaining.

Surely with a lead in the series this approach should reduce the risk of defeat, its NZ that have to win not england.

Yeah, batting again pretty much reduces NZ's chances of winning to nil unless they bowl England out for 20. But I suspect this was driven by the top order needing more time to click.

Fantastic effort from England in the field...barring the Wagner-Boult T20 show.

All I can think is that slog-fest must've convinced Cook to have a quick bash, re-establish a lead of 300 or so and make NZ bat, possibly in wet/damp conditions that will really help our bowlers.
