Jim Carrey's recent "change in my heart" comment got me thinking about actors that have gone on to regret the roles they've participated in.  The one that came to mind was Alec Guinness.  It's often said he regretted playing Obi Wan in Star Wars.  Are there any other examples to consider?

Forest Whitaker in Battlefield Earth - will forever be a brown stain on his film cv.

Haven't seen that one - not much of a fan of martial arts films but would guess the presence of van Damme means it's not brilliant.  Would highly recommend Battlefield Earth though if you're a fan of the "it's so bad it's good" type, that hilarious you might just crap yourself.

Regarding regrettable roles, Peter O'Toole & John Gielgud both did Caligula without realising that it was going to be turned into a hard-core porno, I'm sure both would have been a bit miffed.  Helen Mirren on the other hand...

Brad Pitt hated The Devil's Own, as did Brando, the Freshman.

A film thread wouldn't be a film thread without mentioning Winona Ryder, she regretted Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael.

Did Guiness regret Star Wars? I heard he was indifferent which was why he was happy to take a percentage rather than a fee (something James Earl Jones regretted). I don't think Star Wars added anything of significance to Guiness's already impressive CV but I don't think it detracted from it either

Clooney didn't regret playing Batman, he was well aware that it was a turd and knew he was hardly going to be held responsible for the death of the franchise...it happened long before that.

Costner - Waterworld

There are some interesting quotes regarding this in Guinness's bio on IMDB.  The feeling I had was that Guinness had mixed feelings about the film.  There was a suggestion that he didn't want to be solely remembered for Star Wars.

the best one i read was Dennis Hopper about Super Mario Bros

When his son asked him why he played King Koopa in Super Mario Bros
Dennis Hopper answered, ”Well, Henry, I did it so that you could have shoes”.
To which Henry replied, ”Dad, I don’t need shoes that badly”.

I heard - can't remember where - that Stallone regretted the later Rocky films and made Balboa to take Rocky back to his roots.  I couldn't help feeling that Rocky Balboa was almost a carbon copy of the original because of this.

That's true. He wasn't happy with Rocky 5 and said he didn't want such a great character to go out like that.

I saw Samuel L Jackson on the Graham Norton show where he said he has no regrets over snakes on a plane....

Reason was because he's said it was fun to film which is fair enough I suppose. It was going to be called United 193 or something and he said it's called snakes on a plane or he's out Laugh

Only movie I've seen in a cinema where everyone was up on their feet cheering and shouting when Jackson begins his epic speech. Hilarious!
