Tri-Nation Tournament West Indies - Page 5 Empty Tri-Nation Tournament West Indies

Post by msp83 Fri Jun 28, 2013 9:18 am

First topic message reminder :

Before the dust ssettles on the Champion's trophy, we have yet another Tri Nations tournament involving India. West Indies hosts the tournament with Sri Lanka being the 3rd side involved.
For West Indies, this is an opportunity to jell well under the leadership of new skipper Dwayne Bravo. Ramnaresh Sarwan is dropped due to poor form, and there is no place for young seamer Jason Holder either. West Indies have retained the rest of the squad that played the CT.
As for Sri Lanka, this tournament gives further opportunities to the likes of Dinesh Chandimal, Lahiru Thirimanne and skipper Angelo Mathews to make the step up that reduce the side's real dependence on senior players like Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. Although both were in fime form during the CT, the younger players have to make the qualitative step sooner rather than later, as Kumar and Mahela won't be around for ever. Opener and senior player Tillakaratne Dilshan is out with an injury, otherwise Lanka have also retained the rest of their CT squad.
As for India this is an opportunity to consolidate the gains from the CT. The young squad should benefit from more game time with each other. The likes of Rohit Sharma and Dinesh Karthik have the opportunity to firm up their place in the side. The slowish and lowish nature of the tracks in the West Indies should suit Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, and it presents a challenge to the quick bowlers to adapt quickly from the more friendly conditions in England, though there was no serious swing available in most of the games there. All-rounder Irfan Pathan is out with an injury, but the rest of the winning squad that played in the CT are there for this tournament.
Like most of the Tri-Nations tournament, this one is also a money spinner mostly due to India's presence, and it has come at the cost of a 2 test series between West Indies and Sri Lanka. There is no larger context to this tournament as such, but all the 3 teams have something to add to, consolidate, and improve up on.

So true about the WI, KPF. Such a terrible shame that though. Samuels and Gayle seems the only ones capable of playing a longish innings on any reasonably consistent basis. Bravo needs to do work on his batting, and I think the West Indies need to give Lendl Simmons a long run in the side. He had a very good time in 2011 before the series in India, but after he hit a rough patch he was right away dropped. The likes of Devon Smith are proven liabilities in all formats, yet he gets picked time and again. Kieron Pollard is a very limited batsman in ODIs. The West Indies bowling is alright, it is the batting they need to work on. Johnson Charles somehow seems to have clicked for now. They have to make optimum value of his selection by giving him the gloves and playing an extra batsman.
Chris Gayle
Johnson Charles
Lendl Simmons
Marlon Samuels
Darren Bravo
Dwayne Bravo
Kieron Pollard
Darren Sammy
Kemar Roach
Ravi Rampaul
Sunil Narine.
They should stick with that lineup for some time and see whether it'll click. With the younger Bravo coming in at 5, and Pollard batting at only 7, they might just be able to provide the lineup with some solidity without watering down the fire power.

Sri Lanka, having won the toss are bowling against India. India are unchanged, while Sri Lanka have brought in Dilhara Lokuhettige for the injured Kulasekara, and Rangana Herath is back replacing Sachithra Senanayake.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is reported to be getting better. In fact there is even an outside chance that he might be available for the final if India makes it.

Angelo Mathews brings himself on and strikes 2nd ball as Shikhar Dhawan, trying a forceful shot, only manages to edg it to Mahela Jayawardene at slip. Captain Virat Kohli in at 3.

Perhaps the Indians should have given Ambati Rayudu an opportunity today, particularly considering Murali Vijay is dropped for the Zimbabwe series.

Rohit Sharma is struggling to get going. Felt that put a bit more pressure on Dhawan to attack the bowling. Hope Sharma doesn't do a Bell by playing out a few balls and then get out with a middling score.

WI need 178 to win and 167 or less for India to qualify.
it's a blessing in disguise to get an upwardly revised target of 178 to defend in 26 overs...on this pitch from an 119 fopr 3 of India in 30 overs.

hard to go beyond 4 RPO on this piotch witzh bounce and laterla movement....and sometimes low bounce

Missed the game after the resumption as I was traveling around. An excellent win for India. Terrific new ball bowling from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 4-8 in his 6 overs setting up India's bonus point win with some pretty useful help from Ravindra Jadeja. Ishant Sharma, Ashwin and Yadav also playing their parts.

B. Kumar is like Philander and both are developing in the league of McGrath and Pollock.

India needs to preserve Yadav and Kumar.

Once again get the Lankans on a helpful deck against a good attack and they're a rubbish.

They can't play swing/seam and are average against spin.

All their inflated stats are because of the rubbish pitches in Columbo.

Not too sure about Sangakkara in particular. He's among Sri Lanka's best ever batsmen across conditions. Mahela's stats in seaming conditions do not make for good reading, but he's a master in spinning conditions, so certainly not an FTB.

there is a diffrence of 16 runs between his home and away average........that is a whopping sign of an FTB for a sub continental batsman.
He is a better overseas batsman perhaps then Mahela and Samarweera......an FTB neverthless in absolute terms

diffrence between home and away averages
sehwag 10 runs
dhoni 13 run
azhar a whopping 19 run diffrence
younish khan 11 runs

Final underway. India won the toss and are bowling. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is back after an injury break and Murali Vijay goes out. In a bit of a surprising call, seamer Umesh Yadav is replaced by R Vinay Kumar. Kusal Perera and Suranga Lakmal in for Sri Lanka, replacing Mendis and Lokuhettige.
Sri Lanka 27 without loss after 6.

Bhuvneshwar gets another. After bowling 3 successive maidens during the course of which he had taken out Tharanga, Bhuvi was taken off and brought back from the other end, gave a few runs in the first over back, but struck with the first ball of the next over. But this time, it was not much to do with the quality of the particularly delivery, a pretty poor shot from Mahela, guiding a catch to slip. Sri Lanka 49-2 in the 14th over.

No such unfortunate news as yet KPF. Think he's fine, but it seems they've had a look at his economy rate and decided to give Vinay a run. Yadav hasn't been at his wickettaking best in the tournament so fair enough. Actually I think Yadav has to be India's prime seamer in tests, I don't mind if they limit his ODI game time at this stage of his career.

Sri Lanka 128-2 after 32. Kohli and Raina combined for 9 overs so far, and strangely, Ravindra Jadeja has just been introduced into the attack. Even R Ashwin was brought on only in the 23rd over. Perhaps Dhoni is trying to have enough options in the troubled death overs.

Pitch ain't easy to bat on.......but given the medicorty of the total and the superior technique of Indian batsmen......I think India will get past the line with reasonable comfort in the end.

India 77-3 after 23. Dinesh Karthik the last man out. Raina joins Rohit Sharma. The game is evenly placed at this stage. The Lankan batsmen messed it up, but their bowlers have stuck to their tast very well so far. They haven't allowed the Indian batsman to play with any sense of freedom, and they have picked up 3 crucial wickets in between.

he got 5 games in CT and 5 games here in WI.....inconsistent and medicore...India needs to look beyond him.

Karthik has certainly got a fair run, and he hasn't taken his chance. Tiwary should be back in the frame ones he's back to fitness, and Ambati Rayudu too should be in the mix. But If Cheteshwar Pujara can adapt his game to playing at 4, then he has to be the one. Ajinkya Rahane should also be fancying his chances.

Rangana Herath has 2 in 2, and India 152-7 in the 38th over. Dhoni is still there, but India are repeating the Sri Lankan style of collapse, from 139-3 to 152-7. Sri Lanka's greatest chance to win a final in a long time here.

MS is not looking his usual calm self. He does appear a bit flustered here. Bhuvi is a bowler who can bat, so is Vinay Kumar. The captain has to keep his cool and take control of this chase. But Sri Lanka are pretty much in front at the moment. Slinga Malinga had a poor day with the ball so far, but he could be lethal to the lower order batsmen here.
