West Indies v England 1st ODI at North Sound
First topic message reminder :
A couple of new faces today with Moeen Ali and Michael Lumb handed caps.
A feel of a ODI/T20 combo with Bangladesh in mind.
England wanted to try and change their formulaic style of recent times. Let's see how far they are willing to go.

Re: West Indies v England 1st ODI at North Sound
As Mrs Bat is my witness, I didn't think Root should have bowled the 47th over. Yes, he had done well before then but sometimes with a part-time bowler you need to settle for what you've got and effectively bank it.
Jordan wobbled a bit earlier as well, reminiscent of his time at Surrey. Bopara might have been a better bet.
Windies certainly going to set us a decent target now. Going back to a comment early doors from MfC, will we still be looking so cheerful at the end of the day?

terrible from Jordan. doesn't realise that on this pitch pace should be off the ball, haven't seen him bowl a single slower ball, just awful. #bringbackDernbach

well there's work to be done on the death bowling for sure. Surprised Stokes wasn't given a go rather than the painfully awful Jordan actually, but 270 is very gettable on this pitch really against a pretty average bowling attack...

33 overs to get to 100 then 169 from the last 17. Two good 5th/6th wkt partnerships. But some ragged bowling from the quicker bowlers in the last third. Very ragged. 35 from the last two overs.
245 the ave for this ground.
WI finish on 269/6

Why wasn't broad bowling at the end!!!!!
he is captain isn't he?
he needs to show how death bowling is done

Well England let that one slip didn't they?
Haven't been impressed with Chris Jordan thus far, I must say.
270 very gettable though - England bat deep.

If he has a good series here and then BD, he may well get the 1st Test of the summer.

Think there's a danger of judging Jordan just on this performance. It was certainly poor but he's previously done ok or better for England since making his debut last summer.
With too many memories of his frustrating inconsistency and frequent injury problems at Surrey, I've never been convinced his good form (and he had a cracking 2013 CC season for Sussex) would last. However, just as one swallow doesn't mean summer, one stinker doesn't mean the end.

At least Surrey should have two recent Eng bowlers for their campaign to get back to Div 1.
Or three if you count KP.

Agreed. Thought he bowled well in Aus too, perhaps didn't get the rewards he deserved. His performance on this deck might force him out of the reckoning for the T20 side/squad for BD, horses for courses etc., but to see him excluded for an extended period would be harsh.

Won't play many championship games i believe.
If he did though and i still lived in SE London, i would be at the Oval quite a lot to see him.

Can someone tell me why 34 year old Michael Lumb is in the team please? I thought Carberry was getting 'haters' for being 32 and 'not the future'?

Interesting stat.
This is the first time since their first ever ODI that they have had two debutant openers

Because he's an established player in the T20 side (which is what this is), not someone trying to prove his worth. And because Alex Hales is injured.

Surely there would have been four in the first ever ODI?

Bumble is wrong there saying "Eng don't have the power of a Bravo or Sammy"
Buttler, Stokes, Wright and Lumb have SIX power.

Wright's awful knock is over!! Bascially run a ball with 8 wickets in hand, and a relatively weak bowling attack SHOULD cruise it...SHOULD..
problem windies have is, they only have 1 spin option..no samuels or Gayle..

As long as they don't do what the old team would do and score just 20 off the next 10 overs.
