MEP Elections Empty MEP Elections

Post by Trebs Thu 01 May 2014, 10:10 am

It's the European Parliament Elections on May 22nd, with UKIP hoping to gain the most seats after second place last time out, with Labour and Liberal Democrats looking to hold onto their seats.

But, does anyone care? Only one in three people voted in the last elections, but there seems to be more of a media interest, especially with the TV debates between Nigel Farage and Nick Clegg, which if you haven't seen are worth a watch. Could it be argued that by Labour and Conservatives not showing to the debates, that UKIP and LibDem will gain?

It seems that this year, there will be a higher turnout but will it be a significant amount? UKIP are certainly a more real opposition and will surely gain seats, with the opinion polls showing UKIP are likely to win.

The debates are long forgotten and not at all important looking at the viewing figures.............UKIP are the current protest party......Lib Dems gave up that position when they went all in......

Cameron and Miliband did right not showing up to the debates as it makes Farage look important being there !!.......If they'd shown up there would be greater momentum to have Farage at the ones in 2015.......

Just an election for Euro-phobes and people who want to kick the nuts of the Establishment....

UKIP's vote will disappear come 2015.........Only leader who has to worry is Clegg......He comes fifth and there may be a leadership challenge.......Some Liberal MPs in marginals are getting restless..

Why is politics not open for discussion on this forum?  Fair enough this is more of a sporting forum but it does say in its headline "debate the big sporting AND non sporting issues here".

I'm not a massive contributor to this forum and do come here mainly for the sporting issues but other discussions which fellow contributors have opened and posted on like the interesting discussion on the death penalty are interesting to get involved in, and although I don't have a massive interest in politics, I do think certain parts of it can be interesting and think its a little strange it can't be discussed here, so long as its all civil.

The euro elections I've always found a little strange as its also a vote for local elections. Yet didn't we have them last year (the local)? Or is this slightly different?

Used to be allowed, now it's not. Something about libellious statements, and it being too difficult for the moderators to control.

Of course, what constitutes a "political thread" may be up for discussion; a six page thread on the death penalty (surely political?) is still going strong.

political debates on this forum in the past turned into slanging matches and petty bickering and allegations of racism etc. It is a shame because political threads can be very interesting and the death penalty thread has been very interesting and in the whole very mature.

A couple of posters who were instrumental ion threads turning into petty bickering have been banned so maybe things will be different now.

They might, in a similar vein Villa might win the league next season. Would not be overly optimistic about either though if I was you.

They sit in the European Parliament where there are about 700 other MEPs from all across the twenty-seven member states of the European Union.

I think the United Kingdom (and Gibraltar) has around 70 of those MEPs.

They then fulfill the similar role of what MPs would do in the House of Commons, and make various speeches, vote on legislation and claim some expenses.

In reality, the European Parliament doesn't have that much power within the European Union; the greatest power lies with the undemocratic European Commission, and there are so many other bodies within the EU as well (e.g. the Council of Ministers, the European Council, the Council of the Europe).

The whole thing is a total shambles and a bloody waste of space.

We've only ever had the Conservatives canvassing in all the time we've lived in our area....Labour must think it's a waste of time...

Usually some slick dick with a smug grin..Generally try to keep him talking for a while before springing the news I'm voting Labour..

Know a couple of former Tories on the estate who are now UKIP so expect them to finish top come May 22..

I don't think i've ever seen anyone canvass down our way (North Manc) although would be surprised if half of our area cared about that.

It does sound like another way to syphon money out of the system though. Would be interested to know what they'd done for us as a country? (not having a dig by the way am genuinelly interested as i don't like blindly moaning about stuff ha ha)

I will be voting Plaid Cymru as always. Think now Leanne Wood is in charge and with the rise of the SNP they should do enough to possibly finish second. No chance of shifting Labour in south Wales though. Sadly we seem to be a staunch area for that useless bunch. UKIP wont get a sniff in Wales

I am pro-EU, and am therefore voting Liberal Democrat. I want to support Labour, but I don't know what their policy on Europe is, nobody does. And that includes Ed Miliband. The Conservatives and UKIP are anti-Europe and I don't agree with that, so it's a simple decision for me.

One way to get rid of UKIP is for an in/out referendum to be given. What is so difficult, scared of the result?

Dear me, Labour are pathetic.

A party election broadcast which is just a cheap shot at the Tories, and not a nice one either, while Douglas Alexander got torn apart on Sunday Politics today after trying to defend, in vain, some useless election posters.

I think we all know who the real nasty party are.

Come on Scotland..get independence and England may never be governed by the Labour Party again. It's a nice dream.

They may hate Britain but they love more of it's citizens than the other parties Mate..

Bedroom Tax, Stripping people with disabilities of their benefits, Waiting lists up, Food bank use on the rise......

Can't vote for a Government that targets the weakest in Society......Though I'd vote Conservative/UKIP before I voted Lib Dem..

At least they stand for something..

I'd rather hate Britain but love it's people regardless of what they are worth....

Congrats on the job Mate.........Hope you are lucky in the library too !! thumbsup

Hurrah!

I rather like Farage's bunker mentality; him against all the lies in the media*, and all of the fascist left. And he tears Nick Clegg apart in his spare time.

*The Times called UKIP an anti-immigration party today - more lies. And people wonder why UKIP are so popular.

So do I and neither do I. However I am still baffled about why people get so prideful and dewy eyed about something as arbitrary as the lump of turf you fell out of a woman on. As Einstein said:
"Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind."

I couldn't agree more. When I talk about loving Britain, I am really talking about ideals which I like to think Britain represents, actively promotes, and defends. That is; equality, justice, tolerance, etc.

The Labour Party? Well..if you hate Britain, make sure you vote for them.

I vote Labour. I don't hate Britain.

What was that about sensible debate and no mud slinging?

Yeh I agree, we need to keep this debate grown up so silly comments like duty's really need to be stopped.

That isn't mud-slinging, my dear fellow.

If you wish to see some mud-slinging, you should probably take a look at Labour's European Party Election Broadcast.

And secondly, considering the damage that the Labour Party did to Britain during their thirteen years (is that why the number is unlucky?) in power, of which we are still recovering from (Britain was the last western country to fully recover from the recession), it is rather reasonable to assume one hating Britain would vote Labour.

You mentioned equality, justice and tolerance.

You won't get equality under Labour, you'll get positive discrimination.
You won't get justice under Labour, you shall have political correctness.
You will get tolerance under Labour, but it'll be pushed to such an extent that Britain will be a soft touch.

The Labour Party are led by Ed Miliband; according to YouGov, over 50% of the country's population think that Ed Miliband is not a suitable Prime Minister. Quite right too, for he is an incompetent leader that will ruin Britain's recovery, along with Ed Balls.

A vote for Labour is a vote for sending Britain back into the abyss.

Is their party slogan still "Britain can do better than this"?

Well Britain can do better than that lot.
