Apologies if this was posted elsewhere.

This is a fascinating map that highlights that, by-and-large, the criticisms aimed at the All Blacks in regards to pilfering South Sea players are unfair.

"Of the 1133 men that has represented the All Blacks (in matches as well as tests), just 32 were born in the islands - Samoa, Tonga, Fiji and American Samoa."

So the article seems to be conflicting with the numbers on the database at times, so in the interests of pedantry, I decided to do a number check.

I tot it up as 1,133 of which:

1,049 New Zealand
22 Australian
11 Scottish
8 English
5 Irish
3 India
2 South Africa
1 Hong Kong
1 Singapore

So add those numbers (1,102) - take the 1,102 away from the 1,133 = 31?

It seems it's one less player stolen from the islands Wink  But someone can do their own tally and by all means correct mine too.

The 31 missing came from underground laboratories. Wink

Got to love the irony comment from this guy….it's like now that England are doing what NZ have been doing for years, all of a sudden it is a bad thing. Reading between the lines what he means is hands off our nurseries!!

We've already been talking about what could happen in those underground laboratories over on the Irish thread.... we came to the conclusion that a few Neanderthalised Dutch Caribbean Centres would be just what the doc ordered for Ireland leading up to the WC.

But if New Zealand want to sell us anything promising they have developing underground we could certainly negotiate with them.

I just wonder if we read the article you linked in the same way. It's written for a kiwi audience who understands that there's a large Polynesian portion of the population, who play rugby and qualify for island passports through parents and grandparents (and for some being born there) etc. I don't think this article is about places like France coming and offering a Fijian kid who is at a private boys school on a scholarship a contract. Kids like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zbgpe50p9ls are more likely to end up in League (another union kid currently playing in Melbourne storms under 20 side). It's a recognition by the Auckland rugby clubs (which have a huge huge Island presence in administration of the individual clubs, that their kids aren't staying playing rugby union at home.
