First topic message reminder :

With a few players announcing their departures, and few named to replace them, I thought it'd be useful to have an in-out list.

Also a good place to post any rumours or rumours of rumours.

Let me know if I'm missing anyone?!

Edinburgh have a defence coach!

The backroom team at Edinburgh Rugby has been enhanced with the recent addition of Defence Coach, in the shape of Peter Wilkins.

The UK-born and bred Durham University graduate began his coaching journey with the RFU before moving to Australia where he progressed within the Queensland Reds from Regional Rugby Manager to Defence Coach.

During his time in Brisbane he was also Head Coach of Queensland A and Defence Coach of Queensland Country.

In June this year, Peter and his young family returned home to the UK as he took up the role with the capital club.

In addition to his position within the squad, he has also been sharing his skills with regional club coaches at workshops and younger local players at Edinburgh Rugby development camps.

Wilkins said: “There are a lot of subtle differences between the sport here and in Australia – the rugby programme, the working week and the style of rugby – but the fundamentals remain the same.

“Whether that’s on the coaching field, in terms of getting best practice and getting results from the players, or whether that’s culturally in and around the club, it’s similar the world over.”

This particular part of the globe is a place Peter knows well off the field, too.

He said: “My father’s side of the family come from South Lanarkshire and Montrose and I’ve had a lot of good experiences in Edinburgh both on rugby tours and on visits so it’s a part of the world I’m very excited to have the opportunity to live in.

“Most importantly for me was the opportunity to join a club that’s improved significantly over the last few years and has a huge amount of potential moving forward. To be able to join the rugby programme at this stage is very exciting and I’m really looking forward to playing a part in taking the club forward.”

Head coach Alan Solomons said: "It is great to have Peter on board. The position of Defence Coach is key to us as we look to progress and Peter, with Super Rugby experience under his belt, will no doubt add huge value in this important sphere of the game.”

Assistant coach Stevie Scott said: “Peter will be a great addition to the coaching team. He brings solid experience from the Super Rugby competition and will make a good impact on the players this season.”

Part of the coaching session I went to was run by Peter. Can't really comment how good he'll be. He bases a lot of his stuff on analytics which seems the norm for defence guys. Completely different character to Omar "crazy frog" Mouneimne.

Calum Macrae is currently working with the Edinburgh backs doing evasion skills. He also presented at the session.

All sounds positive, and with Visser gone that's one defensive headache removed from the equation. I wonder how he'll deal with Cuthbert's lack of pace.

Well we're short of scrum halfs with Hart leaving (still don't understand that) but he's just another young pup.

Could really have done with an experienced player signing. I.e. Mike Blair! Sam Hidalgo-Clyne is the most experienced 9 now and he's only just broken through.

I'm pretty gutted to be losing Jamie Stevenson, James Phillips, Tai Tuisamoa, Mike Doneghan, PJ Gidlow and particularly Neil Best.

The spine of the team is still very strong with Mark Bright getting better with age, Miles Mantella and Matt Williams scoring at will, and Lee Millar, Dan Newton, Oli Grove and Peter Lydon providing creativity.

I don't know a huge amount about the new signings, but I'm hoping for some Toonie style inspired choices. It's certainly a far younger squad than last season, that's for sure.

This is a very helpful update, Maccas. It's intriguing to see how many age grade caps there are in the squad. Can we finally get promoted this year?

Yeah and some of them look pretty tasty. Beno Obano on loan for the season from Bath is a beast! Only 20 and 20 stone, yet rapid! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwqWvAmmYfw

I think we could be dark horses, but where we lack is the tight 5. Our backline is the best in the league by a distance, reflected in the tries scored, yet we don't quite have the savvy grunt we need up front to dominate sides. It's quite similar to Glasgow the season before last really (and we have a similar 'organised chaos' style with plenty of offloads). That's why I'm particularly sorry to lose Best.

The club is building year on year, but I think at some point we need to really go for it. From what I understand the money is being assembled for a big push (look at some of the sponsors and businessmen on the board), but they want a sustainable model and will only do it when the groundwork has been laid. Of course, as our squad get better, more of our players will be poached, so in my mind 2016-17 should be the year we should target.

Saying that, if we were able to shock the likes of star studded Bristol and get promoted, then the wallets would open a wee bit more (although once again from a responsible position). Last thing we want is to be the next London Welsh!

To be honest I still think we should try and get into the Pro12. I know I sound like a broken record, but it makes sense for everyone.

Would take us a season or two to be really competitive, but once we were there it would help Scotland, the league and the club.

Oh and once again the squad is a 3rd Scottish Qualified. And it would have been much higher but for retirements and players moving on.

Big T has missed the Australian squad for the wc. Given he's yet to play a game for them that's no surprise!

This has all been a real shame - his head was turned with the chance to play for Australia, and that never transpired.

He could have been at Glasgow weeks ago!

Actually, turns out he's been named in an extended 10 man training squad, who are up for selection against the USA.

I suspect that's where they will cap him.

Yes, he is - unfortunately he is pretty high profile (even though he hasn't played much Super Rugby) and a lot of the press (Rattue in the Herald, for example) think that it's only a matter of time before the All Blacks come knocking.

That's the problem with SQ players. They need to be good enough to come over, but not quite good enough to get a cap with their organic national team.

Not sure if he is Scottish qualified or not.

He played for the Blues in super rugby this season and was pretty poor. Not sure if it was because he didn't get much good ball from a pack going backwards fairly often.

Played for the NZ Maori in the past bust lost his spot this summer to 2 other SQ fly halfs, Marty and Damian McKenzie.

Ihaia West is very skilful but his game management doesn't seem the greatest. Looks very good at ITM level but did seem a bit exposed at super rugby. Similar in a way to Jade Te Rure, maybe Super rugby/Pro 12 is just slightly too far a step up for them at this stage.
Damian McKenzie on the other hand is a very classy player who would be a very good addition to Scottish rugby.

That's a new one! I like the idea of non-organic players, presumably they last longer?

I'd really like a journalist to ask Toony if he's as happy with his propping resources as he was last season.

Really can't fathom some of these decisions to let people go!

I agree letting Welsh leave was a mistake, but maybe he had his head turned? Murray, not so much. I think Euge was probably keen to leave for one last bumper pay deal following his international retirement. I think the RDK situation took everyone by surprise too. Not least the wee girl he approached...
