Re: Silly season transfer rumours (continued)....
A lot of Championship sides are recruiting heavily. Ealing straight up from League 1 are really going for it.
PropDavid, loans still happen but as the Championship sides are getting stronger less players are getting regular spots. For Tigers Thacker has seen some game time off the bench for Doncaster along with Bryant whilst Catchpole and Hempetema got some starts there. Price and Pohe had game time for Notts on a fairly regular basis.

propdavid_london wrote:Tom Casson is off! Thats a bit worrying isnt it? I guess he is after more game time - the Casson/Hopper partnership never really worked.
There were snippets of what he can offer though, just not consistent.
That will leave us with Lowe, JTH, Hopper, Roberts, Merchant is academy cover.
Is Winston Stanley a 15 or a 12?
Stanley is a physical 12/13 so will hopefully fill in well.
This gives us centre options of:
12. Roberts, Stanley, JTH, Sloane
13. Lowe, Hopper, Marchant, Stanley
Loads of options for once and all of them look good enough. Obviously for a large portion of the season Roberts will be away so I hope to see 12. Stanley/Sloane 13. Lowe as the starting line up depending upon JTH and his injuries, form and If he's stayong.

George Smith has signed for Wasps.
http://www.planetrugby.co.uk/story/0,25883,3551_50651,00.html
He had a get out clause in his Lyon contract for if they we relegated.
A legend of the game and still a fantastic player who's experience would add to any side. Will be very interesting to see how he does in the Jeff.
On the other hand Wasps already have their starting back row of Johnson, Haskell and Hughes which is one of the best in the Prem. It therefore very much makes me question where Sam Jones, Guy Thompson and Tom Young will find game time from as they are all at a stage of their careers where they need to play.

Johnson is moving to hooker and I guess Haskell will be away with England for parts of the season (rightly or wrongly), so there should be opportunities for Jones, Thompson and Young.

Tom Young would benefit massively from George Smith's experience i'd imagine.
A back row of Haskell , Hughes and Young rotating with Smith isn't the worst thing in the world.

It's a good move for him. He's reached the natural end of his Ireland and Munster career but he still has much to offer as a player. The only thing missing from his Munster, Ireland and Lions CV is the World Cup and he'll have his last ever shot at it. After that, he owes Irish rugby nothing. It will be strange seeing him playing for someone else but he deserves it.

Re: Silly season transfer rumours (continued)....
I think its an interesting move for O'Connell - he's been in excellent form for Ireland particularly this year but one of his reservations in moving a few seasons ago was that he didn't think his body could cope with the training requirements at a new club, where he wouldn't get the preferential treatment and looked after the way he did at Munster.
I wish him well at Toulon and hope he does himself justice but do wonder if he's missed the boat and might struggle to impose himself down there and be the central figure he's been for Munster, Ireland and the Lions.

Well Toulon does seem to be an aging rugby player retirement home...but judging by the way they're playing...they seem to be looking after their players well.
Especially when you consider they had Johnny neigh on injury free and brought Juan Smith back from almost certain retirement....

Given Bakkies Botha and Ali Williams are both retiring, POC will certainly have a leadership role to play withinToulon pack. Top quality recruitment, every one in france is happy to see him coming here (and also jealous for most of us...). Meanwhile Clermont hire a 31 years old winger from Saracens...

Re: Silly season transfer rumours (continued)....
Wyland Oliver strongly linked with Tigers on a one year deal. Tigers rumoured to be lining up a stellar signing next summer but need someone this season given Allen's injury issues and Bai's age. The plus point is that if our younger talent progress there's no issue dropping Olivier unlike if we're landed a current international it also gives us an experienced option for the big games or times when the younger options aren't quite ready.

Re: Silly season transfer rumours (continued)....
I wonder what will happen with Tom Varndell given Bristol haven't come up?
It would be a great shame if he wasn't playing in the Jeff next year given how prolific he is.
I guess Saracens may be interested though if they are losing Strettle.

For completeness, there is also a young Scottish loose forward called Mitch Eadie who won the club's player's player of the year award in 2013 and would be a superb squad option for just about any Jeff team. He's going to be great.Bathite wrote:Not just Varndell, but Morgan, Lam and Benvenuti would all be great prem options.

A midfield of Morgan, Henson and Benvenutti feeding Varndell and Lemi. Jeez that should rip up the Championship.

Hi Sam,
Will they all stay with Brizzle? I would think that guys like Matthew Morgan would want to be off for regular top level games.

Re: Silly season transfer rumours (continued)....
Well they were all happy to sign for a Championship club on Premiership wages. Most are there for a pay day so probably won't change their minds as it's a less physical league for good money. That should extend their careers.
That might change if a bigger club shows interest but I can't see many attracting much of that. Morgan may be mulling it over but trying to arrange a release from a club as ambitious as Bristol won't be easy and the playoffs won't have sent his stock high either. Unless of course Bristol need to cut costs then all bets are off.

You have to think that the way Wilkinson was able to thrive their despite any even more injury racked career factored into his thinking.

The French clubs tend to rotate their players a fair bit anyway, so I doubt if he will get overplayed down there. Probably with giving up the international games at the same time, it will seem like a bit of a holiday with pay (lots of it!)

Re: Silly season transfer rumours (continued)....
Two big name players are supposed to be announced by Saints tomorrow. Who knows how true that is but the Faletau rumour would tie in. The also badly need an 8. Could be a good marquee signing for them to replace Manoa.

I know a close friend to Faletau and he is very much a home boy and wants to stay in Gwent so I would imagine Northampton is too far. Saints would also have to buy him out of contractRisca Rev wrote:Faletau to Northampton is a rumour apparently

Rumours are that one of the two Saints signings is a very big name - i.e. one of the top few players in the world.
Vermuelen is the main name that seems to be circling given he has turned down a SARU contract and they need a replacement for Manoa.

I agree. I know he's a big Gwent boy literally too. Just putting the rumour on here, seeing as it's the appropriate thread.

Re: Silly season transfer rumours (continued)....
That's what I thought as well Saint but the rumour of one signing being one of the best few players in the world seems to have pulled his name back into the mill. No idea if those rumours are substantiated or not. Then again I'm yet to really see any substance to the Toulon rumours other than them having the money to sign almost anyone - although that has been a successful bargaining chip I will accept.
Being hopeful a bit may depend on whether Toulon are going to play Gorgodze more, and where they will utilise him and Manoa.
4.Taofifenua or Manoa/Gorgodze
5.O'Connell
6.Lobbe or Smith
7.Armitage
8.Gorgodze/Manoa
It wouldn't be surprising for them to add Vermuelen to that but at the same time it isn't weak resources!
Whilst I'd much rather it wasn't at an east midlands rivals I'd love to see Vermuelen in the Jeff so here's hoping.

Well if North is there he has a fellow Welshman to keep him company.
But Vermuelen would make more sense if he has rejected a contract etc.

Weren't there rumours of Folau to Saints a while ago? Seems unlikely but would fit the ball more than Faletau if it is genuinely one of the top players in the world? I can't see Vermeulen pulling out of his Toulon deal.

Only saw the one source re Saints and Folau and it was from rugby inside line Twitter account which seems to link everyone with anyone.
IMO I can see Folau going Japan and playing for Waratahs (like Foley) his coaches have already said he is looking for a flexible contract with the ARU.

Morgan will stay at Bristol if he wants first team rugby, he is just not good enough at 10 for the top level. May make an useful impact sub at 15 but not at 10. The target for the bigger clubs is likely to be Welsh 2nd row Evans who despite his recent injury record is a top class player who won't get back into the Welsh set up playing at the second tier.

Evans might be a punt for Saints or Sale. Saints have Lawes, Day and newly signed Paterson on the books then back row who can cover which isn't ideal for a club competing on two fronts. Sale have lost Paterson and Hines this summer so may be keen to add something to their tight five. Steve Diamond does make hard working players look good.
