This does nothing to dispel the rumours of marital abuse in the rowley household

Jeff, I went to the library on Saturday.
I ordered that Jon Ronson book you were rattling on about on the 'what are you reading' thread. I've only ordered it on your recommendation so it better be good.
If it's not, I am going back the library, heading straight to the popular fiction section and fingering the first librarian I find.

I feel a lot of pressure now Tina, I generally enjoy most of Ronson's books so hope you will enjoy it. I know you enjoy Louis Theroux's programmes so I have hope Ronson is very similar to that, visiting odd sub cultures and the like.

I do like Louis, this is true.
I am all warred out now. I've read nothing but military history for about 6 months so I need a break. I've got battle fatigue.
I'm hoping Mr Ronson will lift the mood for me.

I get like that Tina, read a trilogy on the third reich by Richard J Evans, back to back, was really enjoyable but every book was around 600 odd pages so by the time I had done I had read about 2000 pages and by the nature of the subject they were 2000 pages short of laughs. You definitely need a break after that, think I ended up reading Rod Stewart’s autobiography when I was done.

It was surprisingly good Tina, Giles Smith was the ghost writer who is a genuinely funny bloke. Also Stewart comes across quite well, does not take himself too seriously and remarkably down to earth.

An old couple come over to the club every weekend from Kent as their son has down's an is looked after nearby. They had a bootful of cricket books for me on Saturday. Brian Johnson, Richie Benaud, Goochie etc. Didn't have the heart to say I don't read much. Missus also bought me a shed load at Christmas. May have to start reading, the one about Harold Larwood looks quite good and the writing is quite big.

I enjoyed Henry Blofeld's one. Great story of them driving to Bombay from London in a small convoy of cars including a Rolls. A bit of cricket in between all of the anecdotes. He does waffle on a bit but I enjoy reading that sort of descriptive stuff. Never a dull moment it seemed.
Eventually they arrived here. Think it was '77 for the Centenary Test.

Hoggard's one is bizarre but I enjoyed it. Being a young professional cricketer at that time would have been amazing. Summers in England, winters in SA / Aus.

If the Larwood book is the one by Duncan Hamilton I have read it and it is indeed excellent.

I have a cricket section on my book-selling web-site - quite a few from the 50s and 60s. I'd link to the site, but then you'd all start spamming the 'Contact Us' form. C*nts.

Chicken and mushroom soup, and a chicken tikka sandwich...
Didn't Hogagrd just get voted Englands best ever bowler?
Did anyone else have site maintenance issues for the past half hour?

I wouldn't do that Jules, but by the same token I would not buy any of the books, as I am under strict instructions from TSMR that the only physical books I can now buy are boxing books. Everything else has to be on Kindle or from the library. As such there is little reward in you sending me the link, and the risk still remains that I would annoy you through the contact us page.

The BBC came up with a points system whereby you got more points for getting out players with higher test averages, subject to you having played a certain number of tests. Hoggard's score under this system was the best.

I don't recall Sean, was an easy enough read, end of the day it's a book about cricket, how intimidating a read is it likely to be?

I have a boxing book Jeff. Not for sale - in my own collection. 'Four Kings'.

Do you do specialist books only Julius or everything? Or am I in this hazy state overlooking a sharp bit of wit

I have the same book Jules, good read, not as good as the lofty praise it received at the time, but still pretty good.

Not a lot of people have your experience in reading such an excellent slew of books rowley. It's head and shoulders above all but the very best. Then again if you've read the very best it doesn't bear comparison.
Re: The Culture Cup Round x - Adam is a naughty naughty boy
If the book doesn't come with crayons to colour in the pictures, Sean simply doesn't give a flying one for it.
My son had his first birthday on Saturday, was Christened yesterday and has just started walking. All in all a busy weekend, therefore if there are any reports of dead hookers being found then it must be someone else's doing.

I wouldn't do that as I've no evil son to deny him the pleasure of murdering me himself.

Without the variable of uncovered wickets of course. Or subcontinental plays chucking it.

It was a reasonably unsophisticated approach and for some reason modern bowlers faired far better than old time players. Not sure anyone in their right mind would genuinely argue Hoggard was the best British bowler ever in all fairness. Nice to see his name back in the press though, as he was a hugely under rated bowler. He rarely went for silly runs, could do a large number of overs a day without ever being precious about what end he was bowling from and he took wickets with reasonable frequency. One of the unsung heroes of those years.

There are 'General' sections as well, but I try to cover most areas. I try to concentrate on older books, and non-fiction, rather than fiction, but basically whatever I can buy cheap and think will sell.
I'm sure Tino would love the 'Military' section.

The thing is, back in the day you used to be a good test player if youy averaged 40+. Nowadays that figure closer to 50+ due to flatter pitches, bigger bats etc. As such bowlers these days will be bowling at players with better averages.
That said, I believe Hoggard had Hayden and Tendulkar in the top 3 of the guys he dismissed the most.

I'd have taken Hoggard in a heartbeat. Reliable workhorse who could be relied on to take 2 or more top order wickets. I think there's a bit of Scholes about him where he recieved more respect from his peers than the fans. I must say though I really rated Caddick and regularly watching him bowl on channel 4 is a fond memory for me. Need to get it back on terrestrial asap to broaden participation

Send us the link and I'll pick some up on payday. Need to do a lost of lone shifts and a few books would break the monotony nicely.

I would love to browse your site, Jules. Particularly the military section as I'm always up for older military history books.
But, being completely honest, I wouldn't be able to help myself and would end up sending you pictures of my testicles via the Contact Us part.
Sorry.

Re: The Culture Cup Round x - Adam is a naughty naughty boy
The thing I really loved about Hoggard was there was no element of tortured genius or enigma about him, he just turned up and got on with it. Remember watching him being interviewed when he had took a few against the Aussies. The interviewer asked him how he had took the wickets, think his response was I just run up, chuck it down and hope for the best.
