guildfordbat wrote:Brilliant morning for Surrey. Lancs weren't bad but seemed to lack inspiration and certainly had no answer to Roy who was sensibly supported by Davies. The best innings I've seen from Roy. The trademark powerful pulls but combined with plenty of cleverly placed singles having pushed the field back. For those who accused me of being a jinx yesterday, I did say after 5 overs today he was "looking particularly good"!!

Le Roi
must be on the England Selectors' radar screens now. Having already earned international recognition in the one-day format, he has now proven early this season that he can come in at a tricky time, read the game, then build a substantial innings in the longer game, too.
And, of course, if England are looking for a front line - not part-time - spinner who could chip in with useful runs in the lower middle order, we may have one of those, too

Roy's wicket together with the new ball has given Jarvis extra pace and a new lease of life. Troubling Foakes with a mix of deliveries but the Surrey debutant is hanging in there.

As well as taking two wickets, Lancs have reined in scoring rate since lunch.

Churchy and the guy from Radio Lancs talking about Surrey declaring at 400. I think they're getting ahead of themselves - 343/6.

Jason Roy has scored (if my maths is right)
1545 runs at an average of 57 since the start of 2014.
Developing into a wonderful player

Seen chatter online about a declaration - I hope not.
If we're going to win this game we need to bat once, so put on as many as possible and then try to make them follow on

Re: SURREY VS LANCASHIRE LV=COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Roy really was splendid today. So powerful in his stroke play. Reminiscent of Pietersen at Guildford in 2012 in the way he took on and tore into Kerrigan who had no answer, the slow left armer's figures weren't worse today simply because he got taken out of the attack earlier. However, unlike in the past, Roy was canny as well. Would hit a boundary or even two, see the fielders drop back and then contentedly push a single.
Good support from Davies as well. Prepared to play second fiddle and let Roy have the majority of the strike. Clearly not the innings of the day but still an important one,
Foakes also looked very assured and straight drove beautifully. His first ball was ferociously struck back and crashed into the stumps at the bowler's end. Unlucky not to get a boundary although fortunate as well that Jarvis didn't get a touch and run out Davies. After Davies' dismissal, a good partnership with Batty developed. The skipper put his foot on the gas and tonked his way to a useful 30 odd.
A remarkable and first rate turn around from around 70/4 yesterday. Just a shame about the weather and the umpires (unlike the last Test, Corporal!) being too keen to get back in the warm - a poor show by them, lost 15 mins this am when few even realised there was the odd spot of rain and then play was halted after tea for bad light with the floodlights on and it seeming ok.
Agree with Olly - really go for it in the morning, bash away for a handful of overs to up our score and hopefully only have to bat once. That'll also keep the Lancs (batting) openers wondering and uncertain. I recall Stewie saying he likes to try and do that - particularly as you have to give a minimum of 15 mins notice of an overnight declaration, ie 5 mins more than when during play.

Hi msp - yes, Alec Stewart was also keen to emphasise that and twice referred to Lancs having four internationals in their side in an interview previewing this match.

No, not today, Olly. Weather seems pretty wretched which'll muck up our "bat on for a bit more" plans. If that wasn't bad enough, today is a freebie day at the Oval for Surrey schools - pity the teachers and stewards with several thousand kids to cope with in the rain!

Re: SURREY VS LANCASHIRE LV=COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Good to see the BBC website mention Roy's century as the lead in their report. Up to then, they had been describing this match solely in relation to someone who had contributed 2 to Surrey's total, rather than those who had contributed the other 433.

Simon - fully agree. It's poor and lazy reporting to so regularly concentrate on ''the KP angle''.

Re: SURREY VS LANCASHIRE LV=COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Surprised to see there's been some play this morning. Surrey took the advice from Olly and myself to bat on although the 2 remaining wickets only mustered another 13 today. Foakes finishing with 63 not out - a very fine start and that's been followed by a catch off Dunn to dismiss Horton. Fellow opener Brown also back in the hutch - yet another catch by Roy, this time off Curran.
Don't believe the time lost already and the continuing poor weather will permit a positive result. However, it looks as if we'll be able to take a lot of confidence from this match against the Div 2 leaders.

All very well grizzling about this but what are the actual rules on overseas players and does Lancs' team for this match square with them?
On a separate note, a little ironic that Surrey - not innocent of such accusations ourselves - are muttering about another County's recruitment of galacticos. Ok, so we are fielding four established 'imported' proven talents ourselves (KP, Sanga, Interesting and Foakes) but we also have a generous smattering of top quality young home grown talent on show, too: Zafer, Le Roy, Meaker and Dunn - all of whom may have the ability to go on to significant international level achievement.

...meanwhile, England's Next Spinner/Bat All Rounder comes to the party to leave our visitors 91 for four (with one international already among those dismissed

Lancs are currently 126-6, we have a sniff but as Guildford alluded too earlier, it's a very encouraging performance against the class of the division so far
