Expensive old game!
Some of you will know I've been trying to find my son a sporting interest for a few years now.....done all the usual......football, golf, basketball, tennis etc etc. Well this year we gave archery a go. To my surprise he loved it, so I enrolled him on a beginners course, and now he's completed that and is a club member and member of English archers (or the EGU equivalent for archery)
So the time came to equip him with his own gear..... £100 max I thought. £400 and 2 hours later, he's all set! This is a middle of the road gear too, not too expensive but decent.
Not that I mind of course, it's worth it for him to have an interest that gets him out of the house. Just thought I'd post this to let you guys know it's not just golf gear that's expensive!! But then there's no club fees thank christ!
Any archers in the house? Serious game looking at the regulars, there are equipment snobs here too!

If the amount of porn now available to the youth of today was available back when I was a lad (just pre boradband) and I didn't have to watch pictures load line by line I would never have made it to the golf course. So it is good to see your son is engaging in a more productive past time than I would be if I were a teenager in todays world.
Golf an other sports are expensive but a healthy respect for women and understanding of consent is priceless.

gw,
Any sport is great practice for any other sport, so good luck to you and him.
Did you see GB had a Runner-Up finish (lost in a play-off) last week?

I got into golf after several knee and a back operation. I wanted something competitive to replace things I could no longer do - others close to me suggest if I have nothing competitive I can get a bit grumpy! Back surgeon suggested his sport, archery. It didn't appeal and I eventually opted for golf, having been assured that back injuries are not necessarily a deterrent. Have tried archery since and it is fantastic. Needs as much patience as golf, just as much if not more precision. I never bought kit, and it sounds like that was a good thing!

Hi Kwini, I missed garys result, good news...didn't know he had any kind of card on the challenge tour. I've lost touch with the golf scene, seems like a lifetime ago. Almost 4 years to the day I was club champion!

Must admit I was tempted to have a go myself but I wanted this to be his thing, so I'm purely taxi and observer!puligny wrote:I got into golf after several knee and a back operation. gw,
Not sure how GB got in last week, but he's at it again this week in Belgium, with a prime-time grouping including hometowner, and ET regular, Thomas Pieters.

I imagine you can get to the top of archery very easily as well, given it is such a minority sport. It must be the kind of sport that UK sports bodies will invest in because of the high chances of winning medals.

This is true. I grew up pre-internet days when top shelf magazines were all that was available. Not only were they much harder to obtain, they were very tame compared to what can be viewed today with a simple click. Teenagers must be so de-sensitised to porn today.

Is it any more of a minority sport than golf is?

My friends and I used to try and shoplift them inside newspapers. It was odd that the people who worked in the local newsagents never questioned why the local youths were so keen to read up on the days news.

What on earth were you doing inside newspapers? Surely that would make you more conspicuous...

According to Sport England, in the period Oct 2012 to Oct 2013 (the newest data I could find from a quick search), the number of people in the UK 16 or over who participate once a week are -
Golf 752,000
Archery 36,000
Golf is not really a minority sport in this country. It is the 5th most regularly participated, behind swimming, athletics, cycling and football - in that order
Archery is a fantastic sport. I used to be good friends (haven't spoken to her in some while) with a girl who made the reserve squad for the last Olympics. Amazing watching her in action

Well I can tell you it was extremely difficult to find an archery club.......and when we found one, we had to wait 6 months for the next beginners course, the nearest archery store is 50 miles away, that gives you an idea how much of a minority sport archery is!
