Seriously, I find it painful to watch fed nowadays. He's still a great player, but the ravages of time are  just too obvious to me

Well I can certainly understand your disenchantment with Federer's current level when viewed in the context of his prime 3-Slam-titles-a-year phase. Time does of course play a big part, and Federer was at the summit of the game for so long - and set such high standards for himself and others - that almost anything he does in this, the twilight of his career, will inevitably pale in comparison.

But your perspective also strikes me as a tad extreme. By which I mean .....if you really do find it "painful to watch Fed nowadays" (and you're almost certainly far from alone in that, given the decline from his former mercurial best)- then I wonder who you DO enjoy watching from the current crop.......?

Take this Cincy tourney merely as a snapshot example of how the biggest names have fared. Did you enjoy watching Rafa ....? Did you enjoy watching Andy ....? Were they I wonder less, or more,  "painful" to watch than Fed ? ? And as far as the dominant No. 1 is concerned .....well, the comparison here at Cincy is interesting in itself. In making the Final, Djokovic has played a series of opponents whose combined ranking is 127, and he has conceded a total of 39 games ; the respective numbers for Federer are 62 and 27. This obviously will have little, if any, impact on the outcome of the Final. But again, it raises the matter of where Federer's current game - even in his fading years - sits in relation not just to the field as a whole, but to the elite.

Whatever different spin we choose to put on things, the fact remains that Federer is still making it through to Finals where so many others are not : Eight this year to date, with four trophies. As I mentioned in a previous post, Federer is nowhere near as scary an opponent as he once was. But even today, I suspect that not too many guys (certainly not Murray) are especially pleased to see his name in their section of a draw.

I don't enjoy a whole lot of the tennis nowadays. I like Dimitrov when he's playing well, just wish he could get his act together; court speeds really don't help.

I enjoyed the French open final because of the great shots and it was nice to see Djokovic's bewilderment that his 'human wall' game plan wasn't working.

I think 2004 to 2011 was a green period for tennis. Since then it seems like attritional tennis has dominated.

Against Murray's second serve, it just adds pressure on the server. Djokovic's second serve is unlikely to be treated this way.
Then again...

Well deserved first set to Roger. He was getting into Novak's service games much more than vice versa.

But towards the end of the set, it started to look more even. I would not be surprised if Nole finds a way to turn it around. I expect that if Roger does not win in two, he is not going to win at all.

Feds 55% first serves in and 83 and 80% respectively won on 1st and 2nd.

Even though Djokovic looks disinterested, I can see him sneaking back in.

Petchey making a good point about Federer's greatness that he has had to reinvent himself to stay competitive and that contributes to his overall greatness.

Yes, SB. Old Man has 2 BPs, and breaks with DF. Djokovic should have challenged the call.

Where is the aggressive intent from Novak like he displayed at Wimbledon when losing that 2nd set?

He may as well let Roger tickle his tummy while he's at it.

Looking at the match, it was hard to tell that one of them was a runaway #1 and the other one a 34yo has-been.

Has he ever won a more impressive masters?

Well, agreed; and as I suggested earlier .....if Goblin really does find Federer "painful to watch nowadays" then I dread to imagine what he must think of those players who continue to suffer defeats at his hands ; a group which, let's face it, includes many/most members of the current top 20.

He came back to me on the thread earlier and said he doesn't much care for the fact that attritional tennis dominates these days. Fair enough.

As for today's win by Fed over Novak : there have been 20 others before this one, so in many ways not particularly special. But, as several posters have commented, perhaps noteworthy for the fact that a 34 year old is not really expected to be taking down a strong World No.1

Another Masters for the already very long CV, and without dropping a set ; hopefully some confidence to take into the USO.

Good stuff from Djoko too.

Indeed, he has been fantastic this week.  Not only did Novak and Andy not break him, neither of them even had a BP.  The score in today's match could have been far more one-sided but Novak hung in there relatively well.  Roger had 8 BPs in four different games, but only broke once.

Now he has to hope that Andy and Novak are in the same half of the draw at the USO, as even beating one of them there would be very hard, and he has no hope of beating them back-to-back.

I do not know for sure but I seem to remember that when he did it last time they were saying it was the first time it was ever done (or, at least since they keep the records).

On a relative basis, this one must be more impressive as he is a few years older.

Seems such a bizarre decision. It's not like the tennis was bad when Fed was double bagelling Hewitt back in 04

I am glad to have been proven wrong Smile

I think given what transpired at Wimbledon, I just expected Djokovic to raise his game. The fight wasn't there today. Once Federer established control, that was it. Such a great frontrunner. It's frustrating for Novak given he has generated 35 BPs against Federer in their 4 previous meetings this year. Plus he had Murray the day before.

Gladly take the flak and humble pie on this one. The no.2 back in the bag more importantly going into New York.
