BBC Sport understands Winterkorn agreed a deal to buy out Red Bull last winter but the plan was vetoed by former VW Group chairman Ferdinand Piech. Piech was ousted in a boardroom power struggle and resigned in April."

If RB get a works engine deal with Ferrari, then the VW deal & future engine supply with them won't really matter.

I'd say its less to do with Winterkorn resigning and more to do with the fact VW are stashing £6.5bn away to deal with impending lawsuits, although according to the story they could be hit for as much as $18bn!
A Ferrari engine would obviously be a step up for RB but I'm betting they were hoping for someone to come in and give them a new and better engine.

This matter is at crisis point but for me it would be a no-brainer - stick with Renault for now. If they go with a Ferrari engine with this year's specs it will hinder them even more. Yes the Renault engine hasn't reaped rewards lately but it is still a step up from a year-old Ferrari engine. They should stick with Renault but really actively seek new avenues for engines and hope they can rekindle talks with VW Group.

The offer of year old engines is just politicking, it wouldn't be allowed anyway. Manor were only given exemption because of money issues.

Well it has at least been confirmed that RB will be using Renault engines next season - upgraded in their own factory. Christian Horner also confirmed they will be sticking with Ricciardo and Kvyat.
