c'mon, surely there is more to debate than a single player?

What recruits have bath made in the summer? Is hooper, who still seems to be club captain, even one of Bath's 3 best second rows?

What is going to help Bath take the next step forward and threaten in Europe and win the AP?

Have Bath got sufficient depth should injuries and call ups combine in their midfield? Fearns (also Sisi on loan) and James have gone with no replacements coming in, will the team be weaker?

So the main 2 signings in the off season have been Priestland and Matawalu. Both are good signings I think, we certainly needed another 10 as cover for Ford, although I'm not quite sure how that will work if they both end up being in the 6N at the same time. Priestland can also cover FB, so that's useful too. Matawalu looks great on the highlight reel but I will wait to pass judgement until I see him in action. He will certainly provide a good alternative option for Chris Cook, who I hope will continue to get game time as he looked good last season. We have also signed Jonny Evans from the Dragons.

So certainly not as many signings as say Leicester or Wasps, maybe the coaches felt they already had a good group to work with, or maybe someone at the salary cap department had a quiet word. Either way, there are fewer changes at the Wreck than elsewhere.

I will admit to feeling a little nervous about our pack. James had been rather found out towards the end of last season, but with 3 young (and English) LH's, I wonder if we will miss a bit of experience there. Probably good for England long term, less good for Toulon away.

Backrow is also a concern, with Fearns and Sisi not being around, there will be a lot riding on Burgess to play a part there. For the Glasgow away match last season we ended up fielding academy second rows in the backrow, so with fewer players this year, there has to be a concern something similar will happen again.

Speaking of second rows, I had thought another would be brought in. That they haven't will mean more time there for Garvey and hopefully some game time for Ewels (captained England U20s recently) and Will Spencer, who is a big 19st+ lad. Our lineout may well be a weak point, particularly as both Webber and Batty can go awry.

All in all I think our squad could be troubled if we get injuries in certain positions. That said, our back line is looking very strong and with quite a mobile pack too I think there could be some really exciting rugby played this year. Personally I can see another top 4 finish but not winning the thing, but I would love to be proved wrong.

How will they cope with a 40 point deduction?
Will Bruce Craig shy away from TV cameras?
Will Glaws finally beat them? Sad

- Come out firing and still finish above Glaws
- He will have used his QC mates to shaft the PRL to get us a reduced deduction and will be handing out £50's to keep the fans on side
- If the coaches make a mistake and select a side for the 'West country cup' again...

Austin Healey

Quote:
In Niko Matawalu, they have snapped up one of the stars of the World Cup. We all saw against England what a dangerous player the Fijian scrum-half is, but it will still be interesting to see how Bath employ his free-spirit instincts in the No 9 shirt. I also hear they will unveil another marquee name in the coming weeks.
I was at their training session earlier and I was seriously impressed. The speed at which they operate is at a level above any club side I have seen before. One of the interesting things is that Bath adopt this secondary line where they station their distributors passing the ball behind the runners. It is similar to what Wigan Warriors do in rugby league. I only wonder if other teams will be better prepared for it than they were last season.
