Seems the 606 rugby Community does not rate Gareth Edwards
There is a vote here https://www.606v2.com/t61391-hall-of-fame-2015-6-round-1-group-c
You want a drug cheat like Carl Lewis to beat him?
Seems so, as no-one here can be arsed to vote.

Lewis was also a drug cheat who allegedly paid the USATF to cover it all up.

You believe this though:
You know, once I was thinking about quitting when I was diagnosed with brain, lung and testicular cancer, all at the same time. But with the love and support of my friends and family, I got back on the bike and I won the Tour de France five times in a row. But I'm sure you have a good reason to quit. So what are you dying from that's keeping you from the finals?

Re: Seems the 606 rugby Community does not rate Gareth Edwards
I think for a lot of rugby fans might be that, good as he was, they don't rate him as the greatest of all time rugby players. I'm old enough to remember him playing. Thought he was a great player, but he wouldn't make my short list for greatest of all time rugby player. Hence there's no motivation to vote.

Re: Seems the 606 rugby Community does not rate Gareth Edwards
I dont vote on these type of polls anymore, as Ive tried (unsuccessfully) to explain to others that to compare sports people from differenty sports is just too subjective, and especially in an example like this one where a player in a team sport is compared against three individual sports people.
But What even makes this comparison even dumber is that Edwards is the only one from a contact sport.
No I didnt vote for Edwards. I didnt vote for anyone. Its not a case of getting the answer wrong as its the question that is wrong.

Unfortunately on the whole and in the World context rugby is still a minority sport.

On the whole New Zealand's part of the World? and Rugby has never been a minority sport here.

Phelps is the standout in that list. The only one who is the GOAT in his own sport.

I don't tend to vote for things like this. But I wouldn't vote for Edwards as I never saw him play. I probably would have gone for Phelps if I had bothered.

What? The square-eyed, modernising generation doesn't know much about a great rugby player from the 60s/70s? Next you'll be saying not many people who debate their rugby online know who Cliff Morgan even was
Go into any national stadium on a match day and ask around. I'm sure you'd get a far more positive response to your survey than you would on here.

Re: Seems the 606 rugby Community does not rate Gareth Edwards
Like Hammer, I don't usually vote in those kind of things.... it's all so subjective so what does it matter how anyone votes. I let the voters vote.
I remember Edwards playing and, yep, he was a spark for his time.
Lewis would have been the guy though that at one time in the 80s I would have placed highest in that list. It wasn't just the speed, but I think it was the grace of his running style. It was art, a thing of beauty. Usain Bolt, for all the va va va voom antics post-race, doesn't come remotely close to the sheer force of Lewis's presence in his prime - and the fact that Lewis 'excelled' at more than one discipline too, would have given him more kudos.
But of course, it's now virtually certain it was all yet again a bluff and a sham. Yet another golden boy was less than gold afterall.
So on we go.... should Phelps be on the list? Well maybe. But honestly I've lost appreciation for 'greatness' in many sports because I guess Carl Lewis himself (and others before and since) have proved that if it looks too good to be true, then it probably is.
I don't trust any of it anymore - any of it.

I think the thing is that Edwards is the greatest player for people of a certain age and a certain location. These things are always subjective. Just a cursory review of the halfback position would also bring up the likes of Danie Craven and Nick Farr-Jones to name just two. That's before you even get into other positions.

Re: Seems the 606 rugby Community does not rate Gareth Edwards
As has been mentioned many times before, comparing generations is always hard due to the way the game was played and the facilities and conditioning now available to modern day players.
Edwards for me was the best of his generation and like others from the amateur days would have also made it in the pro era.

And this is why these polls wouldn't give a balanced view. You're basically trying to get rugby supporters to vote for rugby nominees which would indicate that GE would be the most popular, rather than deserving of a hall of fame place over other celebrated sports people.
I voted for Phelps by the way....
