AO 2016 Day 5 Empty AO 2016 Day 5

Post by bogbrush Thu 21 Jan 2016, 1:13 pm

Don't know where laverfan has gone but I'll step in

http://www.ausopen.com/en_AU/scores/schedule/index.html

Kyrgios v Berdych looks very intriguing!
Seppi gets his chance to make another shock v Djokovic; I'm not holding my breath
Some women are playing too.

But the big event for me is whether Federer can beat Dimitrov and become the first man to reach 300 Grand Slam match wins. Given he's one of only 6 men to pass 200 that's quite impressive!

Must be the best day 5 in prospect I've ever seen. Fed dimi didn't even get the bloody night spot!

I hadn't noticed quite how low Dimitrov had fallen. 27th seed! In my mind he was still floating around in the mid teens.

That's a tough draw for Federer. I think he'll get through fairly comfortably, but there's no doubt that Dimi potentially has a lot more game than the average 3rd round opponent.

I'm totally confused about timings. Anyone got any opinion when Fed might be on? I'd like to watch it but pulling a whole all-nighter at this stage of the competition is a tough ask.

Yeah, I said the other day that after the 1st round he has proper opponents all the way. It didn't look that tough last Friday but it's no stroll.

The afternoon session starts at midnight UK time.

Fed is on after two women's matches, so I'd imagine that the absolute earliest he'd be on is about 3 AM. Seems more likely it will be after 4 AM though.

Yes, I noticed that the other day. These records aren't quite the same I suppose as breaking the Slams record, or the weeks at #1, but they're pretty big stuff nonetheless.

Looking at Hewitt retiring today, Roddick deep into media work, Ljubicic coaching.. er.. Federer, and it is weird to see Federer still trying to play with the kids (without having taken career time-outs like Agassi). I remember thinking this way when Jimmy Connors was defying age - I'll never forget that incredible US Open run when he whipped the crowd into an almost unprecedented frezy. He was a complete nutter and a nasty b@st@rd though.

Also amazing to recall how many Lendl won. He used to play some very long seasons though!! He played 138 matches in one year!!!!

My memory might be playing tricks, but I don't recall Lendl having any other interests in life - hence the crazy schedule !

He did get heavily into golf - although I seem to think that was more towards the latter stage of his career.....?

Federer would like to pack up too, but still keeps trundling along as a lowly Number 3. I reckon he only does it to keep all those kids in smart clothes. You know how conscious of their appearance Swiss families tend to be - even if it's a supermarket shopping trip.

Great schedule for Day 5. Fed will beat Dimi easily but will be a decent match. Think Berdych will edge out Kyrgios.

I honestly don't know what to expect... for Dimi this might be his last chance to throw off the baby Fed tag. SURELY he has to do something big sooner or later...

Federers serve is very sharp, but there looks to be some opportunities in the ground game...

Andy Murray stands 31st in this list with 554 ATP match wins. By the summer he should have surpassed Mats Wilander's total of 571. With a good 2016 he should surpass Bjorn Borg's total of 609 (who stands 22nd in the list).

But he started years before Andy did. And in any case we could say Lendl had a more truncated career than Federer has had but we have no mention of that. Lendl's career spanned 16 years whilst Roger's is at 18 and counting.

By this I mean Borg's career wins spanned 10 years and Murray's will have spanned 11 so about a year's difference. Federer and Lendl's career difference is two years with Federer playing for longer so this not counting thing is really pretty naff is the point I am making.

Nor was I downplaying anything Borg has achieved. Just as people earlier were pointing out landmarks Roger was about to surpass I was doing the same in terms of Murray's progress up the all-time list.

Borg barely played after 81 so it's really a bit of a bigger difference per year.

Ferrer will go above Gottfried shortly as the player with most match wins who hasn't won a slam (at number 13 on the all time list). All players ahead of him were world number 1s at some point.

So tonight would seem to be Thiem v Goffin; Fed v Dimi and Nick v Tomas as essential viewing. Sleep can fit around those.

Anyone else noticed there have been a huge number of aces this tournament? Must be on for an Oz Open record I'd have thought?

Just thought I'd mention here, since there was talk of day session and night session semis on the other thread, that the men only have night session semis (Thurs & Fri). So no chance of Fed facing Djokovic in the day conditions - sorry! Consolation for Fed fans is that the top half finalist has an extra day's rest over the bottom half. And it could be indoors, so pray for rain. Or Djokovic could lose to Seppi maybe .... Erm

Wonderful sportsmanship from Thiem. Goffin hit a returning, it was called out but shown to be on the line by HE. Thiem had framed his shot out. Umpire ordered the point be replayed, Goffin didn't question it but Thiem conceded the point, as he said the call was after his shot.

This is the type of incident which really should lead to an Edberg award. Unfortunately he promptly lost the next two points to drop serve.

Somewhat surprised Thiem seems to be on his way out. Not really sure why, but I expected him to beat Goffin.

Maybe because I think that Thiem is on his way up, so should be improving, while I am thinking of Goffin as having already found his best level.
