Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
First topic message reminder :
Super
For starters I live in a one bedroom flat. But I think you know that it should not take the people of a nation putting refugees up in their house before the government is required to do anything about it.
For example the government could easily rent 50 premier inns and put the refugees there until they can be given homes.
"Of course it matters. They have a far greater responsibility than the UK does"
So you are saying that because those countries closer to Syria have neglected their responsibilities the UK has the right to do nothing? You are saying that one country doing nothing is sufficient for another country to justify doing nothing?
bob
WTF was that?

Nothing wrong with wearing sports gear for sports activities, that's what it's designed for. Wearing it for going down the shops, restaurant, on holiday etc is just sad. As bad as those planks who hang flags from balconies.

Ive got tons of football shrts, I went through a stage of buying them from places I was on holiday, and then just became a habit to pick up cheap football tops. Sometimes i would wear them, when no playing. Just because it was an item of clothing, and I dont usually stroll round with no top on. I would wear a football top to the shop, though I would not wear them for social events, or going to the pub , unless its to watch football. I would even wear a top in bed, if it was cold anyway. I still see no issues with any of that. I am so happy my life is pretty good and i dont have to get wound up by minimal things.

Getting away from the wearing of sports clothing (I do wear rugby shirts occasionally to show support - but never with a number or a player's name on it - and golf polo shirts, even when I'm not playing), can someone tell me why we have to have football interviews as Global Announcements on the Sticky threads? I don't mind them on the football pages but why foist them on everyone? We don't all worship at the altar that is football!
I suppose I'll get modded out for that heresy

I would probably wear football shirts too if they actually looked semi respectable and weren't made from the cheapest material known to man. I mean they are made of polyester and are being sold for €60 plus. Talk about a rip off. Polyester can be toxic and it retains bad odours more than any other material. They are also covered in branding. You could get lots of nicer shirts for that amount of money. I do on occasion wear rugby shirts but at least they are made from quality material and don't smell so bad.

Well said LP, the top 4 threads on the golf page are all obscure football interviews. It's worth noting that there isn't a single comment on any of those threads, so it's pretty obvious that nobody else is interested in them either.

I reckon if Super was married, and St Andrews had a football team, it would be a different story. You can't empathise when the conditions don't exist for you. I can imagine him staggering home with a can of Tennants Extra dribbling down his football shirt, on his way to teach his wife a lesson.

I've wondered about the stickies/announcements, (very mildly) irksome and I'd rather they didn't appear personally, but hey ho it's not my website and I do dip in to the occasional "who's the best" or (so-called) culture cup things that appear.

St Andrews probably has a football team and I'm sure Super hates it for no longer being relevant for serious competition, having no defence and constantly being open to attack down the left.

You're probably right Pedro. Otherwise would have topped myself long ago. It's incredible watching world class players transform into donkeys simply by slipping on a blue and white hooped shirt.
I've always struggled with the song which goes "we're the finest football team... the world has ever seen". Now fans of QPR and every other mediocre team sing this song every week without the merest hint of sarcasm. I'm convinced a lot of the fans are so, err, passionate (deluded) that they believe it is true.

I don't really mind there being stickies to promote the wider activities happening on the site but it would be nice if the golf section got some promo once in a while. I am sure we could all cope with the football global stickies if there were golf global stickies designed to bring more traffic to the site?

Kwini's thread could easily be a global sticky for one day a week. Put it up as global sticky for 24 hours in the lead up to each weeks PGAT event. It doesn't even need to be every week, just put it up for the more interesting events.

I was mildy disgusted when I initially thought this might refer to Mac's prediliction for teenage wizards. Then I remembered he's been vocal in the Adam Johnson debate. I bet there would have been no faux outrage had a 15 year old Emma Watson thrown herself on Mac in his bedsit.

I don't want to speak for the good lady, but I suspect she probably was referring to the admins rather than the moderators. Let's face it the golf mods can't keep up with the weekly golf stickies never mind the global ones.
Let's face it the football global stickies are Poopie but the local moderators don't get much say in the matter. The admins of this place still like to think they can be the next Mark Zuckerberg.
Bit of a cheap shot from a mod though about a chip? You should be ashamed and apologize

Bugger off. I'll neither apologise nor am I ashamed. I'm fed up to the back teeth of open posts that are directly baiting mods/admins. You, in particular, should know better. LP's posts are suffixed so often with a challenge like the above, it's almost a joke and it's boring in the extreme. If someone has a gripe of that sort, stick it in a PM or, if it bothers them that much, go somewhere else.Davie wrote:navyblueshorts wrote:No, you won't, but if it'll help the chip that's still growing there, I can delete it if you like?LadyPutt wrote:Getting away from the wearing of sports clothing (I do wear rugby shirts occasionally to show support - but never with a number or a player's name on it - and golf polo shirts, even when I'm not playing), can someone tell me why we have to have football interviews as Global Announcements on the Sticky threads? Where do your sympathies lie in this case;
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/mar/16/north-korea-sentences-us-student-to-15-years-hard-labour
An american student has been sentenced to 15 years hard labour in N.Korea for stealing a political banner from a staff room in a hotel.
Should he have known to avoid that sort of behavior when visiting the DPR, would you like to see his release negotiated, is the punishment fair or do you have any other thoughts on the matter?

Should he have known to avoid that sort of behaviour in N. Korea?
Well yes, rather silly thing to do. From the article: "In a prepared statement read out before TV cameras, Warmbier said a member of Friendship United Methodist Church in Wyoming, Ohio, described as the mother of a friend, had offered him a used car worth $10,000 if he could return with the banner as a “trophy” from North Korea." So a bit of an idiot really.
Would you like to see his release negotiated?
Of course, 15 years hard labour is a ridiculous punishment for this "crime", but not sure N. Korea will play ball on that.
Is the punishment fair?
Of course it isn't, it's completely ridiculous.
Other thoughts.
Probably N. Korea grandstanding against the US for the latest round of UN sanctions. It really is a completely crazy place, and TBH why any sensible Western person would want to travel there eludes me.

On your last point I wonder if in this case did he want to go there to hand out bibles?
Does anyone know the previous outcomes of cases like this and whether or not the west can usually get prisoners back from the DPRK?

Mac, from the article he was at the end of a tour organised by Young Pioneer Tours, but they just seem to organise tours there. Might have genuinely gone for a spot of tourism, there's no evidence that he was there to hand out bibles, or anything linking him to religion other than the silly stunt he tried to pull for a "mother of a friend" who's religious. Tenuous at best IMO...

I like obscure holidays though. An island off Hiroshima was my last holiday and I'm going to an old Nazi town in Patagonia in May for my next trip.

Interesting take on it. I'd say it's his tough luck. What an unbelievably moronic thing to do. Yes, by our standards, the punishment appears absurd. But we shouldn't be looking at it by our standards. He's in the PDRK. Could have been worse after all; he could have been blown to smithereens by anti-aircraft battery. I have little/no sympathy for all I think the PDRK regime is horrendous.Mad for Chelsea wrote:Should he have known to avoid that sort of behaviour in N. Korea?
