The final chance to shine before The Masters at Augusta National and the Shell Houston Open provides one last chance to gatecrash the party should the winner not have been invited earned. Matt Jones, D.A. Points, and Johnson Wagner have all earned an invitation in this manner. With it's Masters style green complexes the Houston Open provides the chance to find some much needed form or confidence however no one has gone back to back and Anthony Kim was the only previous winner to have a top ten finish in the following week.
World number two, Jordan Spieth, headlines after losing his number one spot at the WGC Matchplay. Spieth missed out in a playoff last year but bounced back by winning The Masters. Fellow top tenners Rickie Fowler, Henrik Stenson, Dustin Johnson, and Patrick Reed join Spieth in Houston. J.B.Holmes is the defending champion; he saw off first Spieth and then Johnson Wagner to win. Other former winners in the field include Matt Jones, D.A. Points, Hunter Mahan, Phil Mickelson, Johnson Wagner, Stuart Appleby, Vijay Singh, and Robert Allenby. Of the former winners Appleby has two titles and Vijay has three, all earned in the space of four years.
There are three Categories where you will need pick three players, plus reserve, from each one. There are bonus points available if you get all of your picks through in any category. Get all 9 picks through and you get an even bigger bonus. It's all way down at the bottom in the scoring section if you are interested.
This is a full field with cut event, cut points will be available; see above.

RULES
Picking players: Unless stated, pick a total of 9 players as follows:
Pick 3 players from each category, plus a reserve per category.
Event winner: The person with the most total points at the completion of each event will be declared the winner. In case of a tie, those involved will match-off each picks' final position score in descending order. i.e. Player A's best finish vs. Player B's best finish, Player A's 2nd best finish vs. Player B's 2nd best finish, etc... until one's pick finishes better than the other(s).
If there is a tie after all 9 picks have been matched against each other, those involved will be declared co-winners.
Player Withdrawals: If you pick a player who withdraws during a tournament, that player will be eligible for points for all completed rounds and making the cut if they withdraw after the cut. It must be apparent that the player completed their round for them to be eligible for either the low round, worse round, top 5, or top 10 low round scores. If a player withdraws before starting the tournament then your reserve will be put in that player's place. It is up to you to check that your players are in the starting field.
Holidays / Absences: If you will be absent for an upcoming event (e.g holidays) you may post the numbers on the most recent fantasy league event and the respective tournament(s) that apply or PM them to me. Example: Pick 3 players and 1 reserve from each category and the relative event number or name: Players 4, 5, and 8, reserve 9 from Category A, players 1, 3, and 7, reserve 5 from Category B, players 1, 2 and 17, reserve 12 from Category C, Event #12.
Failure to submit picks: If you do not submit picks you will be awarded zero points.
Deadlines: Picks must ideally be submitted before the first drive is struck on the first day of the tournament. However, late picks submitted after the tournament has begun must be for players who have yet to start (or are not showing a score on europeantour.com, PGATour.com, etc.), and these will not be valid unless they are seconded by any other league member.
All fantasy league disputes and discrepancies will be considered by the League Judge: LadyPutt. All decisions made by the League Judge are final.

Remember all ladies and gents who moved your timepieces forward last Sunday, it's a 5-hour time difference between East Coast and Londinium again, a six-hour difference with Houston where the boys are opening the batting Thursday at 1.20 p.m. Wentworth time.

If there are any more withdrawals, given that some have not picked a reserve (why not????), if they are affected they will have only two picks in that category - so says the Lady Judge!

Owen, would I be right in thinking you were selecting Sung Kang because as Kwini mentioned he was in the field replacing Bronson Burgoon?
At the time of posting the field there was no other Kang's listed in Cat C and on checking the world ranking Sung Kang at 179 would be in the field under Cat B. As such he's ineligible for your picks and Vijay Singh steps up

Some ninety seven players broke par in the first round of the Shell Houston open and rounds of 65 were needed to make the Top Five Low Round scores. Two players in the morning wave were looking pretty at the top of the leaderboard. Roberto Castro and Dustin Johnson, who was a Fantasy League pick, did jus that. In the afternoon wave two other players, Scott Brown and Morgan Hoffmann, joined them at seven under and the other Hoffman, Charley went one better with an eight under round of 64.
The lessser "n'd" Hoffman was a popular pick in the Fantasy Leaguer with nine folks sticking him in their team. BlueCoverman, BobtheJob, Davie, Eyetoldyouso, Kwinigolfer, LL Cool Nay, Owen10ozzy, Raycastleunited, and SirBenson reaped the rewards. Raycastleunited broke from this pack as he also had Dustin Johnson in his selection. AlciG, I'm Never Wrong, and Sand also picked Johnson to get off the mark.
It was a bittersweet day for LL Cool Nay as he had the leader and the player with the worst round, Charlie Beljan, who then withdrew; welcome to the Fantasy League LL!

Round two was eventually finished and the cut line moved to one under. The failure of popular picks Louis Oosthuizen, Shane Lowry, and Brooks Koepka caused havoc in Category A and just over half of the Fantasy League failed to earn a bonus from what's normally a safe bet. Cut bonuses in Categories B and C were just as problematic with only six Fantasy Leaguers picking up a bonus from these categories.
Beninho and Owen10ozzy came the closest to keeping a full set as they both lost one pick. McLaren made have lost two more picks than those two but he kept the full complement in two of the categories and he was the only other Fantasy Leaguer to earn more than one bonus. BlueCoverman, Davie, and Kwinigolfer all have seven picks left and all earned the one bonus. AlciG, Eyetoldyouso, I'm Never Wrong, LadyPutt, Pedro, Raycastleunited, SirBenson, and TheCleaver joined McLaren in having six picks left. All, except LadyPutt and SirBenson, earned a cut bonus. BobtheJob, Hibbz, Hogie, and Sand each have five picks left, Hibbz and Sand both earned a bonus. EmmDee57, GolferMartin, LL Cool Nay, and SetupDetermines all have four picks left. Super_Realist has just the three.
Five players shot 68 to tie for the low score in round two; four of those were picks. Jamie Lovemark and Lucas Glover both earned points for TheCleaver, Jamie Donaldson earned points for SetupDetermines, and Will MacKenzie earned points for Kwinigolfer. Russell Henley was the other player to shoot 68.

Despite lots of opportunitues to score points in round three just over half the Fantasy League didn't trouble the scorer. Rounds of 69 were needed to make the Top 10 Low Round scores in difficult scoring conditions. Thirteen players shot 69 or lower; Henrik Stenson shot 66 for the low round of the day and eleven Fantasy Leaguers picked Stenson.
Four other picks shot 69 to score points and five of those eleven Fantasy Leaguers had one or more of the other scoring picks. Beninho and Hibbz had two more while Hogie, Kwinigolfer, and Owen10ozzy had one more picks. AlciG, I'm Never Wrong, LL Cool Nay, McLaren, Pedro, and SirBenson all had Stenson and Davie was the only other Fantasy Leaguer to score without having Stenson.
With a larger field for round three a secondary cut was implemented at one over. Ten players had an MDF; seven of those were picks. Eleven Fantasy Leaguers were affected by this; LadyPutt and AlciG especially so as they both had two of the seven. Beninho, Hibbz, I'm Never Wrong, LL Cool Nay, McLaren, Pedro, Sand, SetupDetermines, and SirBenson were the others to lose another pick.

Re: Fantasy League 2016 - Spring/Summer Session - Event #01 - Houston Open
Hi 1GG,
I've just got a query on the scoring as my score remained the same from rounds 2 to 3 but i've still got Lovemark in the Top 10 on the leaderboard, so should this have given 20 points?
Are you also able to explain the cut points this year, especially the number of points you get for a bonus when all players in same category make the cut?
I know scoring has changed since last year, just trying to follow it a bit better, perhaps if I could get a breakdown of my existing score for this tournament?
Thanks mate, much appreciated for running it and liking the number of tournaments this year.

Points are only give for low round scores... So top 10 low rounds + ties. In this case 69 and lower scores. Lovemark had a 70.
I'm not sure about the exact bonus points so I'll let somebody else answer that.

Re: Fantasy League 2016 - Spring/Summer Session - Event #01 - Houston Open
Hello TC,
AlciG has is right in his explanation of the Top 10 Low Round scores for round three but I can see why the confusion comes in; before I took this over I had the exact same question as you. In round one the Top 5 scores happen to be the same players at the top of the leaderboard. We use the Top 10 Low Round scores in round three because that gives the opportunity to folks who have picks who aren't at the top of the leaderboard to catch up. Hope that makes sense?
Here's your scoring breakdown from round to round.
Round 1:
Your lowest scoring picks were Jordan Spieth and Jamie Lovemark who both shot 67 but it wasn't low enough to make the Top 5 Low Round scores which was 65. 0 Points
Round 2:
Cut line fell at -1 or 143.
Cat A: Rickie Fowler 139 (5 points)
Cat A: Phil Mickelson 140 (5 points)
Cat A: Jordan Spieth 140 (5 points)
Cat B: Jamie Lovemark 135 (5 points)
Cat B: Charles Howell III 138 (5 points)
Cat B: K.J. Choi 148 (0 points)
Cat C: Lucas Glover 139 (5 points)
Cat C: Steve Stricker 145 (0 points)
Cat C: Rodolfo Cazaubon 147 (0 points)
Six picks made the cut so that's 30 points. Then each category is looked at individually to see if all three made the cut.
Cat A: 3/3 (5 points)
Cat B: 2/3 (0 points)
Cat C: 1/3 (0 points)
Then it's checked to see if all 9 made the cut if so, 20 extra points are then awarded. In your case it's not applicable.
Total points from cut: 35 points
Round two saw the Low Round score as 68. Of your picks Lucas Glover and Jamie Lovemark shot 68; each scored 10 points. Total points for Low Rounds: 20 points
Total points after round two: 55 points
Round 3:
Of your remaining six picks three (Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth, and Jamie Lovemark) shot 70. Thirteen other players combined to shoot 69 or lower so the Top 10 Low Round scores needed to be 69. 0 points
Total points after round 3: 55 points
Hope that helps to explain the scoring system, let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to bamboozle you

Re: Fantasy League 2016 - Spring/Summer Session - Event #01 - Houston Open
With his win Jim Herman earns the final invitation to The Masters and no doubt will be mentioned as being the fourth player to win the week before to earn a last minute trip.

Cheers chaps.
But critical review will show I only won because Grumps didn't come under Starters Orders.
Ref his post Houston post - and I'll ask this on the quiz thread:
Who is the last British golfer not previously qualified for Augusta who won the week before (as Herman did yesterday) to earn his Masters invite?

Cheers for the explanation 1GG, The Low Round Top 10 makes sense now.
And yeah just wanted it clarified on the cut points and I got that, maybe you could post the cut points under the scoring system for future events though?

TC, it did used to be shown in the scoring system but I think I must have deleted it when posting a no cut event. Thanks for highlighting this; I've just added it back into the Masters posting and will make sure it's there for the next event. Cheers, Grumps
