Post by Guest82 Fri May 20, 2016 12:10 pm

I just commented on the 'pre' thread.

Think it is Nadal - Murray & Djokovic - Stan.

Murray - Nishikori
Nadal - Tsonga
Djokovic - Berdych
Stan - Raonic.

Thiem also in Rafa's section.

Djokovic's path:

1R Lu
2R Qualifier
3R Delbonis
4R Bautista-Agut (Coric, Fritz)
QF Berdych (Ferrer)
SF Nadal
F Murray

Think he'll be very happy with everything to SF...

Yeah it is a very good draw for Djokovic, until the semi-finals.

Think it has opened up for Murray too though.

Rafa - nightmare. Fognini, Thiem, Tsonga, Djokovic, Murray. Only Tsonga of that lot is a good draw.

SF Nadal / Thiem / Goffin
F Murray / Wawrinka

MURRAY
1R Qualifier
2R Bourgue / Qualifier
3R Karlovic / Montanes
4R Isner / Paire (...or Edmund? Wink )
QF Nishikori / Kyrgios
SF Wawrinka / Raonic
F Djokovic / Nadal

NADAL
1R Groth

Not too bad to SF...

Cakewalk! Very good draw for Murray. I'm guessing he would have much preferred Stan to Rafa in his half, more so than Djokovic.

I think he's a very serious contender given the draw. I make him second favourite behind Djokovic now.

Good draw for Andy. Paire perhaps the most dangerous player he could face up to R4. Kei is the toughest QF but Andy has a great record against him and Kei has Gasquet or Krygios in R4 who could push him.

Stan's draw looks very good. Hard to see him losing before SF.

Agreed BS...and here are all 4 top seeds paths (now in OP):

DJOKOVIC
1R Lu
2R Qualifier
3R Delbonis
4R Bautista-Agut / TOMIC(!) / Coric / Fritz
QF Berdych / Ferrer / Lopez
SF Nadal / Thiem / Goffin
F Murray / Wawrinka

MURRAY
1R Qualifier
2R Bourgue / Qualifier
3R Karlovic / Montanes
4R Isner / Paire (...or Edmund? Wink )
QF Nishikori / Kyrgios
SF Wawrinka / Raonic
F Djokovic / Nadal

WAWRINKA
1R Rosol
2R Klizan
3R Chardy / Mayer
4R Simon / Dimitrov / Troicki
QF Raonic / Cilic
SF Murray / Nishikori / Kyrgios
F Djokovic / Nadal

NADAL
1R Groth
2R Bagnis / Qualifier
3R Fognini
4R Thiem / Zverev
QF Tsonga / Goffin
SF Djokovic
F Murray / Wawrinka

I'd say Djokovic has best draw, then Murray, then Wawrinka but poor old Nadal...its not the best!
As a fan...could this be the slam where Goffin makes his run?
I can imagine Nadal would find him tricky on clay, assuming Rafa gets past the other banana skins!

Murray has the best draw, with the exception of the QF. Djokovic has a slightly harder R1-4 draw IMO plus Rafa in the semi.

Rafa's looks brutal on paper. Although every chance that Fognini doesn't make it to R3.

Thanks to all for the information.  That draw should settle Djokovic nerves but he might be slightly undercooked when it comes to the semi-final or final. Yes Murray's draw is good also. As long as he gets to the quarter-final in good form that should give him the platform to raise his level in the QF and beyond.

Yep HN...if he even gets to the SF he'll be pleased...and at least would be played into good form.
As NS says, the issue for the others is arriving at QF/SF slightly undercooked...but not a really bad problem to have!

Wawrinka's draw looks okay up to the quarter-final.  He has a lot of good muscle memory from last year to draw upon, and he seems to be running into some good form this week on the clay.

Your 850 thread was a real eye opener when it came to Wawrinka and has changed my opinion of him when it comes to assessing how much is left in his tank (compared to his age of 31).

The prognosis is not good for Rafa but it only highlights what a rough ride he has had over recent months. But as you say Lydian if he makes it through to the Semis.. then I would give him more than a good chance.. to leap all those hurdles, and still be there he has to be in good shape. And as there are those who appear to be put off more by the inclement conditions maybe the rain goods will intervene Very Happy Nothing is for certain for anyone

Tsonga may not get past Goffin. Foggi not in the best form of his life. Thiem is still playing at Nice, what's that guy thinking, when FO is round the corner? Thiem plays the most matches so far this season if I'm not wrong.

I think Rafa will be match tough if he reaches the SF.

I give Granollers a very live chance of beating Fognini. But you never know with Fognini.

I expect Rafa to make the semi-final, but it's either match tough or tired from tough matches. Could go either way.

I made the error or recording the draw and watching. It must have been the worst sport TV ever - I even had to work out myself the Nole and Andy routes, but that was only because they were first and last

Terrible commentary, why didn't explain they draw as they went along. Mind you they probably didn't understand it themselves

Come back the FA all is forgiven!!

I'll hold you all to these statements when Rafas draw opens up and novak finds these powderpuffs having the matches of their lives. Way too often do we see tough draws open up and vice versa

Pretty fair draw for all.

Nadal has a somewhat difficult draw, but he should be able to get through to the semi at least, although there are some banana skins to step over.

Djokovic should be able to play half asleep through all the early rounds and maybe all the way to the semi final.

Would have slightly preferred Nadal and Djokovic in opposite halves, because I still see them as the big 2 at this event, although now that Murray got the most clay points this year and Stan is the champion, that is no longer so clear cut anyway.

Nishikori as a potential quarter final for Murray could be interesting, that's losable for Andy. I think Stan will make his semi final slot now I've seen his draw. All his matches look like opponents that he should beat, but you never know.

With Federer gone, it just needs one big player to suffer one surprise early defeat to really make the draw look open.

Yeah good point. I remember Murray have a 'nightmare' draw the year he won Wimbledon, compared to Djokovic's cakewalk. I think he was scheduled to play Nadal>Federer>Djokovic and ended up playing Verdasco>Janowicz>Djokovic. Whilst Djokovic had a five set semi final against Delpo.

The way he lost it last year and the year before this is really his last chance to win it. Federer won it when he was 27 and now Djokovic is almost 29!

Nadal has only been beaten twice at Roland Garros, one to Soderling and the other to Djokovik.

Last year however we didn't learn much about Nadal because he had an easy route to the quarter final: wild card, Almagro (a once promising player), Kuznetzov, Sock before losing easily to Djokovic (7-5, 6-3, 6-1).  This year Nadal looks to be in better form but his draw is tougher.

Nadal is Nadal, he's the king of clay. Why are we doubting him? I would rather doubt Murray, Stan or Djokovic than doubt Nadal who has won MC and Barcelona, beating Thiem, Stan, Murray and Kei, and ran Djokovic close at Rome.

I like the fact that Wawrinka is on the other side and will have many banana skins before facing Novak. Also good for Novak that Murray is on the other side of the draw, sure Nadal is going to be tough semi but it looks like he has the harder quarter to battle thru.

Which half starts first that is crucial, does the Novak/Nadal half start first or the Murray/Wawrinka half start first?

Brave to predict Murray to win but would have been unthinkable a few years ago. In 2013-2014 it was accepted fact on this forum and elsewhere that Murray only challenged for 3 slams per year and was expected to exit RG in the R4-SF range.

Of the top 4 seeds:

Stan has the best draw by far - relatively easy early rounds, avoids Nishi in QF, and is in Andy's half.

The other three all have some pluses and minuses:

Rafa has hardest early rounds, but avoids Nishi in QF.
Andy has easy early rounds and no Rafa in SF, but has Nishi in QF.
Nole has easy early rounds and avoids Nishi in QF, but has to face Rafa in SF.

I would say out of the three Andy's draw is probably best - not having to face Rafa in SF is a big plus.
