Black and white version
----------------------------

Trainer Panama Lewis takes padding out of the gloves of Resto............Billy Collins jr gets permanent eye damage....Can't fight again....

Lewis and Resto go to jail after Collins kills himself in a car crash.........A tragedy for sure..

However there is little bit more to the story than that.........

Billy Collins Sr sued the New York Commission for $65 million in the aftermath of the fight for negligence........Allegedly on fight night  Panama Lewis asked for 15 extra minutes to glove Resto and the NYC official responsible for over looking the procedure left the room, I imagine to ask for a ruling.......In that time according to Luis Resto.... Lewis and the other cornerman took the gloves to the toilet and by the time the official came back the gloves were on the fighter.....

Resto then proceeded to pound Collins jr causing eye damage with gloves that held half the required padding.

in the months after the fight according to the Opthamologist who examined Collins Jr a Dr Bruce Mazar......Collins could have fought again............According to his Promoter Bob Arum... Collins was offered fights......Billy Collins Jr's Wife stated that Collins' Father didn't want his Son to fight again probably because he didn't want to jeopardise the lawsuit against the NYC.............A lawsuit that was un-succesful....

None of this should take anything away from the disgraceful event that took place on the undercard of Duran v Davey Moore but it is a version of the events and aftermath I rarely read.....

As for Panama Lewis black bottle..................Luis Resto commented that he had the special bottle in four fights under Lewis.  He stated there was a drug that Asthmatics use to help clear the airwaves in their lungs contained inside the bottle...

Billy Collins Jr....R.I.P.

Watch Assault in the Ring, a lot of this is talked about in that (for anyone that's interested, it's on youtube somewhere).

They didn't just take the padding out, he also had his wraps soaked in plaster of paris.

Despicable behaviour and the main reason i lost a ton of respect for Pac when he gave Marg a payday after he did similar

Plaster of Paris is conjecture........According to some sources the officials were a little hasty or incompetent in the post fight examination and the wraps were never properly investigated......

Wouldn't rule it out though....But we know the gloves had half the padding removed.

According to Resto himself plaster of paris was used. (can't remember if Lewis confirmed it or not,) and it wasn't the first time.

the most shocking thing i found is Lewis's blase attitude towards Resto

Lewis still won't admit to glove tampering so he isn't going to admit to plaster of paris.....

Resto has every reason to dislike Lewis.......Three years of reasons....one would tend to believe his version though.

Like I said we know Lewis tampered with the gloves and we know Lewis called for the "Special" bottle v Arguello.....

Plaster of Paris is more vague in its origin......

Resto came clean and admitted he'd also used plaster of paris. I've never heard this version before (Dr. Bruce Mazar etc.) Do you have a link to any of this?

I thought the lawsuit aganst Lewis, Resto, Top Rank, the inspectors, the bout's referee and Everlast failed because Collins died and the suit against the NYSAC came after Billy's death?

All done because of betting as well i think (or was that something else, who knows though). A very sad but fascinating story

I bet you have just been reading up on wikipedia.. thumbsup

Maybe watch the documentary Derby alluded to........when you have time.

Haven't written anything in the OP that isn't corroborated.......It is a subject that deserves respect.

Sad thing is Luis Resto was a very good prospect until he was fed to Bruce Curry after just a few fights..........Curry had just been robbed by Wilfrid Benitez......

Very good fighter Bruce Curry (Don's brother)....If it wasn't for out of the ring problems he could have been a long term champion........Though he did win a World belt..

I chucked in the bit about Bruce Curry and that it was a big fight for a novice..

But the rest is in the documentary..

There's something I didn't know. Cheers Truss. It is alluded to at one point that Resto was supposed to be a good prospect.

Another good one to look at is Day of the Locust. Anymore anyone can offer up info on

This is good: https://www.si.com/vault/1998/10/26/8102058/bare-knuckles-the-night-billy-collins-fought-luis-resto-something-was-terribly-wrong-with-restos-gloves-the-beating-collins-took-cost-him-his-careerand-maybe-his-life

"Over the next couple of weeks Ray and his father visited seven ocular specialists, all of whom confirmed the worst: Ray had suffered a torn iris in his right eye. The result would be permanently blurred vision. There would be no more boxing."

"He tried getting work but had little success. His first job, painting houses, lasted a couple of weeks, until the boss, concerned about Collins's vision problems, let him go. He was also laid off after a brief stint at a burlap bag factory."

I bet Collins could still have got a licence (plenty of fighters have despite impaired vision) but surely his father was looking after his best interests pursuing the lawsuit?

Documentary is a tough watch - poor Resto isn't the brightest and watching him being dragged from confession to confession is grim.

Collins problems keeping a job were more to do with drinking and depression...Boxing was his life.

I'm sure Sr loved his Son and wanted what was best....But not sure Billy Jr's interests were served by inactivity and plenty of time to stew on being f**ked.

But hindsight is a wonderful thing.

The more you hear about this one, the more tragic it becomes. To think his father, in looking to keep him safe and secure his future, may have inadvertently contributed to his death, is heartbreaking.

They were a poor family and Jr was the ticket out of it.....He was a popular kid back in the 80s....Chief support to Duran v Moore..Big fight.

Like Cooney..Being good looking..exciting.. white and Irish was a ticket to ride back then especially in the big Apple.....Era dominated by Black and Hispanic fighters. Mancini earned a fortune beating stiffs at 135 and he was back Country..

Whether his Father had only his Son's interests at heart is a subject that has been raised.

Only he will know...Let us hope so.
