SURREY VS YORKSHIRE/SOMERSET SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
First topic message reminder :
SURREY HAVE NAMED A 13 MAN SQUAD, INCLUDING MARK STONEMAN AND KUMAR SANGAKKARA, FOR THE VISIT OF YORKSHIRE IN THE SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP, STARTING ON TUESDAY 12 SEPTEMBER.
Surrey, however, will now be without Jason Roy and Tom Curran for the rest of the season due to their England white ball commitments.
Conor McKerr will be unavailable for the remainder of the campaign having sustained an ankle injury.
There is no place in the squad for Scott Borthwick after a run of poor form but there is for Freddie Van den Burgh
THE FULL SQUAD IS:
Gareth Batty (c)
Rory Burns
Rikki Clarke
Sam Curran
Jade Dernbach
Ben Foakes (wk)
Stuart Meaker
Ryan Patel
Ollie Pope
Kumar Sangakkara
Mark Stoneman
Freddie van den Bergh
Amar Virdi
The burger van plus either Dernbach or Virdi to miss out need the corporal for a weather update to decide the last spot.

Re: SURREY VS YORKSHIRE/SOMERSET SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
The draw was clearly favourite at stumps yesterday but I didn't think it was as nailed on as some (looking at you, JimBob!
).
One session on and I'll stand by that.
Our first major milestone is to get the Tykes to follow on. To avoid that, they needed 270+ with 9 left at the start today. They now need 150+ with 6 left. I would have settled for that.
We need an absolute minimum of 3 more wickets in the mid session coming up.
Haven't been able to follow any of this morning's play but seems like a great effort from Freddie. Important that others now come to the party. Once more - #hopethatgetsyou

A wicket for Sam after lunch has Yorks 302-5 - and Guildford's hope grows....!
If we can bowl them out for a lead of 180-200ish...you never know!

If you offered me the minimum of 150, I would take it. Need to get 'em back in again tonight and take a couple more before stumps.

Just been catching up on the stream. The ball from Clarke, yeah? Agree with you. Churchy (who normally only sees it live when commentating) suggested ''height'' but it was comfortably hitting the stumps three-quarters of the way up.

Two wickets in an over for Batty - a second bowling point for Surrey, and suddenly Yorkshire only have 3 wickets left, with 99 runs needed to avoid the follow on.

Cracking over from Batty. We needed that. Now need to make sure it counts.

8 down at tea as Meaker gets Pattinson
217 runs behind - if we could wrap this up within a half hour after tea for around 190/200 lead we have a chance - albeit slim, of forcing a positive result

In my book - as an absolute minimum, we need to be able to enforce the follow on and must do so. I'm not too worried about the size of the lead although it'll be a minimum of 150 for the follow on. Then we ideally take 2 wickets tonight. Sometimes getting a couple of wickets in 5 overs is easier than 25, you never know!
Anyway, it's still going in line with last night's hopes but nothing is ever guaranteed.

PS Brilliant delivery from Meaker which took out Pattinson's middle stump. Would like to see more of that from him, particularly when bowling at the tail. He's sure got the pace for it.

First job done. Sam and Batty quickly take the last 2 wickets. Lead of almost 200. Put 'em back in and get 2 back in the hutch tonight.
Corporal - you're very quiet. Is there something you're not telling us about tomorrow's weather?

PS Foakes having an excellent game. A ton first up followed by some top class keeping including catches, a stumping and a part in a run out.

Back on duty now Guildford! (Doing HM training run earlier...) Pleasantly surprised we've managed to bowl them out for under 400 - especially after their big opening partnership.
Fine, tight bowling display by Freddie earlier - no doubt that Surrey have parked the burger van on Yorkshire's lawn!
If precedent is anything to go by the Oval pitch now becomes totally lifeless as we move into the last day - but let's hope there is at least something for the bowlers to work with. Got to be a bit promising that Batty and Freddie have both taken wickets.

Still nearly 12 overs to go.

Yorks 59/1 at stumps, trailing by 139.
I would have liked a couple down but still a very good showing by Surrey. Need the same tomorrow as well as the rain holding off.

Mornin' all - assuming the weather gods are kind and allow us a full day, imo we're going to need to take those remaining 9 wickets in no less than 80 overs at the absolute outside.
Assuming Yorks go at around 3 an over, that would mean us chasing something like 100 in 14 overs. Now that would be exciting! However, don't rule out hands being shaken on the draw at 4.50 pm with 'em only 4 down. I do feel we were one wicket light last night.

To be fair to the bowlers this is a pitch where 600 is playing 400 and 270-2...another Oval road!

Approaching 1300 runs for 22 wickets including 5 centurions does suggest it isn't the toughest batting track ever encountered...

Certainly for us.
Don't think things will change for next week. The Cidermen are at the Oval then. Don't want to give Leach and Bess a bunsen!
Some good to excellent individual performances from almost half our team (Freddie, Burns, Rocky, Foakes, Sanga) but still no match for the track.
I think our getting more bonus points than Jimbo H's boys this week moves us to third in the table although we are not yet (mathematically anyway) safe from relegation.

Just 13 points separate us in 3rd with 7th place. Any of those 5 could easily go down.

Corporal forecasting services suggests that the three Div 1 matches in S/SE England (Oval, Lords, Southampton) may escape much weather interference (obv bad light is a bit unpredictable including when you do or don't use the lights in second half of Sept!) but match at Leeds could be a bit vulnerable on Weds and esp Thurs to a band of rain pottering aimlessly over from the west. A bit uncertain as to how far/fast that rain goes. However, already relegated Warks are so weak these days that Yorks may be able to beat them in two days!

Thanks, JimBob.
That's a particularly good point about not making the pitch too spin friendly. It would be mega daft if we did and play right into the hands of Leach and Bess.
We might still stick with the Burger Van though. He provides something different with the ball and is a better bat than most of the other bowlers. One of him, Dernbach and Meaker to miss out (along with Virdi) imo. Tricky. I'll pluck a name out of the air and say it'll be Meaks on drinks duty.
I'm going along in the morning.

Great call on the eleven, JimBob.
Major boost to get Tresco on the stroke of lunch. He was very impressive and looked well on for a ton.
With 5 seamers bowling, we need to watch the over rate. Can't afford a points deduction. More tonight.
