England at tea looking to sit down in the boxseat after tea. They can have one eye on a lead of 100.

Probably should have caught that.
Ha. Easy for you to say! Very harsh indeed. The ball was travelling and he had less than half a second to react.
Haha...I see The Dog is going to disagree with me on principle today
I don't think either catch was easy. But Smith is an excellent fieldsman and I think he'd be annoyed he didn't cling on. As a bowler , I'd say thanks , saved four !
Cummins on the other hand is a big tall fast bowler ...can't expect him to do a Maxwell Special on the boundary...
Smith is a brilliant fielder and yes, I'm sure he would be annoyed it didn't stick (like the others). Saved 4 but could easily have injured a hand too.
As for Cummins... he's a superb athlete with a great pair of hands. He just misjudged where the rope was. One or two steps closer to the rope then he was in the perfect position to take it.
Nothing about principle, old chap. Just seeing it how it was.
Don't worry... I won't be writing a long winded post match diatribe full of "what ifs" and "could have beens".
You can if you like , Dog
I hope you aren't suggesting I am in the habit of doing so ?
It's better to just accept you were well beaten ,surely?
Maybe not a habit just yet... but it sometimes doesn't read too well from the other point of view if one was to be pedantic about it.

England continuing to build. They are 365 for 6. Cook eyeing a double hundred is 178 and Woakes 36. Yhe lead now 38 and the partnership a very handy 58.

Oh. Must confess I did not realize I had been getting up your nose in that manner.
I certainly accept that Australia have deservedly won this series : and thought I'd conveyed that. I don't think they're some massively superior team though ; so I didn't think it unreasonable to discuss some of England's errors which have contributed to the margin of defeat ...sorry if that doesn't "read too well" from your side of the kennel ...

Bouncer from Cummins does the trick. Woakes tries to hook it but gloves it behind to Paine.

Lead at 39. England 366 for 7. What can the debutant offer with the bat?

Woakes gone gloving to the keeper. Not the start England wanted after tea.
Cook running low on partners. How will young Curran handle this situation ? I reckon he will cop some short stuff...

Have England used any of their batting reviews? As far as I can tell they haven't.
Apart from Vince and Malan the wickets were clear cut requiring no review.

No reviews used as yet.if Vince and Malan had used them it would be a different story.

Superior though not massively superior obviously, alfie. Hard to tease that word out of you. I don't think anyone has suggested they are massively superior? Although it's nice to get a glimpse of how your mind works!
Good to see Cummins recovering from his illness... though I wouldn't have minded seeing Woakes score a dozen more for the sake of the tipping comp.

England 367 for 7 and have a lead of 40. Will Cook reach 200 or will he run out of partners?

Re: The Ashes: 4th Test; Boxing Day Test, Melbourne
I get the feeling that Cook is highly focussed, is avoiding risky shots, and grafting. The conditions here are better for him in this test and he is really making the most of the situation. So far he has kept this test match open and is giving England a chance. This might even end up as a draw (which should please flintoff01). It is a shame about Vince and Malan, especially Malan as he seemed to be in form and his was a clear cut bat before wicket.
ps I am only listening to this on BBC radio and checking the BBC website from time to time.

Cook staying strong but looking fatigued in his running. Very understandable. Curran to face Hazlewood.

I should probably back out of this whole thing ; but just to be clear I am not interesting in offering excuses for the one-sided scoreline. If I spend more time (though I do think "long winded diatribe " is a little on the insulting side of banter ) on musing on what England might do to get back in the contest than on praising the victors it is because you can only say Steve Smith is a super batsman so many times before it becomes dead boring...perhaps not from your side of the fence.
My mind - when it works at all - is often given to flippancy. Perhaps that isn't always obvious.
Anyway , enough , I think. I won't address this further.

Curran not lasting long. Hazlewood getting his third (well deserved ; he has bowled very well in unhelpful conditions) ...and ironically once again the batsman was unaware he had edged it

Cook probably too weary to go ballistic now he's left with the bunnies...and not really the type anyway. So I suppose you are right there Craig.
Hard to see Broad lasting too long. He's not going to get too many in his half...

Some valuable runs being added here. Wasn't at all sure we'd see 400 up after those late middle order wickets fell in a hurry.

Double hundred it is
Delighted for Chef. Under a hell of a lot of pressure coming into this match - responded brilliantly. Suppose there will be cries of "too late" from some quarters (which I'm sure he will have in his own mind : he is very much a team man , and would certainly have wished to do this while the Ashes were still live ) ; but I'm not interested in nit picking.
Should bury the rubbish about considering retirement for a while : doesn't look ready for pipe and slippers just yet

Indeed. As I've said all along : the tailenders are capable of standing up (given the odd bit of fortune) provided they are paired with a proper batsman who takes them seriously and gives them an incentive to risk some lumps.
It was unreasonable to expect the likes of Broad and Ball to risk injury when the Bairstow/Woakes types were throwing their own wickets away before they'd even faced a couple of balls. Steve Waugh was the master of batting with the tail...because he trusted them ; to the point where his bowlers ended up thinking they were better than they were ...if you know what I mean. It worked.
Sixer from Broad and the lead is over 100...
