Re: Some 2018 Boxing Chat
Garcia should have a tune up at light welter after a lay off and then he’ll be fresh again. Wouldn’t say he was massively ruined by Spence and maybe has a bit a kudos by taking a jump to a weight class he is clearly not in and surviving.

Re: Some 2018 Boxing Chat
Always a bridge too far for Mikey. Career feather who maybe matured into lightweight against a guy who cuts weight to make welter.
Duran was a career lightweight who moved up as he aged, and hadn’t fought as a lightweight for over two years by the time he fought Leonard.
Hell of a win, for Duran and a great fight, but Garcia was making the bigger leap from a size, and fight night weight perspective... if not a talent perspective... so not really a direct comparison.

Great stuff reading about these legendary fighters. Interesting to compare weight class movers from past era and present. I guess the anatomy and physiology of the body doesn’t change over decades but training methods/weight cutting etc has changed.just wonder how that changes the comparisons between them from that era and now?

Undisputed cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has vacated his WBA title ahead of his move to heavyweight. Thus fragmenting the championship.
Champion in recess Denis Lebedev was mandatory for Usyk but the Russian will now fight someone else for his old title

He's apparently going to fight Carlos Takam. I think that the champions would do well to be worried about Usyk. He's quite a fighter. Would be good to see how he handles getting tagged by a full-sized heavyweight professional though. I would love to see him in with Fury - I think Fury would have his work cut out in that fight. not one for the purists unless Usyk carries a punch up with him... Would Hearn put him in against AJ? Probably not for a while, but if Usyk were to pick up Wilder's belt, it could happen. However, it's unlikely Wilder would go anywhere near him.

Re: Some 2018 Boxing Chat
Usyk is set to be made WBO heavyweight mandatory but that mandatory is due until January 2020. As per WBO rules a champion becomes mandatory when they move up. Once again current WBO mandatory Dillian Whyte left on the outside looking in.
Wilder won’t fight Usyk considering he won’t fight on any network other than Showtime
I think Fury’s a little too big for Usyk. Fury is 2m and probably 50-60lbs heavier.
Hearn is all about the money so he’ll put all his eggs on Joshua vs Usyk. Usyk is the far superior boxer but Joshua is still considerably bigger in size

I read this site loads, don't contribute very much at all, so feel like a bit of a hypocrite writing this. This thread though has ruined this already almost dead forum. Anyone can post any topic on this thread, when most of time it would make perfect sense to start a new thread with a new topic. Everything can fall under some 2018 Boxing chat.

The true question is does the version of Thurman that beat Porter and Garcia still exist? Or it that just a memory now? He was woeful in his comeback fight

Let it go Hermy, Floyds retired and did so after schooling Manny. Personally would like to see Pac man retire now before he ends up ruining his legacy.

Didn’t see it but everyone said he was woeful. There’ll be no rust this time though he says
So is this his cash out or has he played it cute and he comes back to his best for the fight of his life?
And is that version you speak of good enough to beat your Mannys Spences or Floyds or is he just behind? Least we get to find out thanks to the senator stepping up like a champ

Re: Some 2018 Boxing Chat
Manny obviously is vastly passed his best but he can still bang and Thurman was badly hurt by Josesito Lopez whom isn’t a puncher by any stretch of the imagination.
This opportunity for Thurman is essentially the last chance saloon cash out retirement bout or the fight that proves he’s still the king at 147.
Thurman was at his best against Porter and Garcia, for me he won both fights clearly.
Whether ‘One Time’ at his peak could’ve been Floyd or Manny is unknown as Thurman’s career has been littered with long absences from the ring.

You’re right Floyd did school Manny’s ass no need to see that one again I think
Manny still got a deeper resume than Floyd though and it keeps getting better

Re: Some 2018 Boxing Chat
Unfortunately Hermy I think he can ruin it, if he starts losing to lesser fighters (Jeff Horn comes to mind) then people will jump on it sadly. He's very similar to Floyd in that people are desperate to see him fail so they can say how they were right and he was pants (idiots).
He's a fantastic fighter, has a great legacy but i'd like him to retire at the top (or near to it) and not end up like a RJJ jr

Re: Some 2018 Boxing Chat
Difference maybe between Jones and Manny is Roy fell off a cliff after the Tarver loss no significant wins after that
Manny came back after his losses to virtually(bar Floyd) dominate the pack
One or two losses though and Manny will pack it in, I’m sure. He won’t hang around long enough to do any damage to his legacy
Roy maybe wasn’t as good as a lot of people thought(and still think) but he’s still an atg. So has he really damaged his legacy as much as you say? You can’t take away what he’s achieved

Re: Some 2018 Boxing Chat
Is this really last chance saloon for Thurman? I don't think so, personally. One scrappy fight (after two years out) is forgivable I think, and at his age, he should be in his prime. I think if Thurman shows up for this, I'd pick him to win. And a Thurman win is better for boxing, announcing himself as a legit challenger to Crawford and Spence. That's what I want to see!! Rather than a former great showing the world that he's still got it.
Manny has had an awesome career, and you could argue that he's earned the right to keep fighting for as long as he feels competitive. On the plus side, his presence still adds intrigue and global box-office appeal to the division. But on the flipside, if he's no longer able to challenge for the top spot (I don't see him giving Crawford too many problems), then why hang around? What is he trying to prove? Why risk losing to lesser fighters?

Re: Some 2018 Boxing Chat
Roy Jones Jr was one of the best boxers of all time in the middleweight - super-middleweight divisions. Then he started his body changing climb all the way up to heavyweight because presumably that was where the money was. Age and fighting way above his natural weight division was his ultimate downfall.Herman Jaeger wrote:Difference maybe between Jones and Manny is Roy fell off a cliff after the Tarver loss no significant wins after that

Hope I didn’t offend you with those comments, you’re clearly a massive Jones fan
He certainly was outstanding when he was at the top of his game
But Manny Pacquiao that’s a real resume for longevity at the highest level. A totally different question here- who rated higher all time great wise Pacquiao or Ray Leonard, saw a few fans debating it on you tube the other day is why I ask

Plenty of people happy with the result though, maybe Galahad should have thrown a few more combinations but equally can you win a fight by punching thin air all night? It is what it is. Santa Cruz is going to be a very difficult fight for Warrington

Re: Some 2018 Boxing Chat
The fight certainly seems to have divided opinion. Of course you can't really put Kid Galahad in the same category as Bernard Hopkins, but... I think there are similarities. Hopkins would try to disrupt his opponent's rhythm, slow the pace, spoil, and not throw a lot. Hit-and-hold... counterpunch. I appreciated his ringcraft, but it didn't always make for a thrilling fight. Similar to Galahad/Warrington, many of his fights certainly weren't always easy to score.
I'm not sure we can totally blame Galahad for an uneventful fight, though. Warrington seemed a bit tentative.. didn't seem to commit in the ring, the way he did against Frampton.

Good idea in principle, but Canelo's so rich it'd be pointless for him. Cash talks. He has a truckload. He only got 6 months for a blatant breach. He's now unified MW champ after a close (some say rigged) decision. Where's the justice in that? Forget it - he's minted, he sells well so that's alright then. It's a joke.

Re: Some 2018 Boxing Chat
Andy Ruiz, Jr says he will beat Joshua again because Joshua is rubbish at boxing (lacks boxing skills). He says Joshua punches hard but he can take them - it was only the one that he didn't see that floored him - that affectively woke Ruiz up. Joshua landed several times on Ruiz's head following that knock down - but he was able to withstand them all as he was then able to see them all coming. But Joshua was unable to handle Ruiz's speed and clusters of punches and power.
Similarly Freddie Roach says Ruiz beats Joshua in the rematch. He says that Joshua has regressed since the Klitshko fight - bulkening up more with muscles and gassing in mid to latter rounds. Says Ruiz had the skills to breakdown Joshua and the power and speed to finish him off when Joshua gets into trouble. Roach says he likes Joshua (he thinks he is a good kid) and could help Joshua to improve - but does not want to be seen as attempting to poach fighters from other training stables. He says Joshua showed good skills as an amateur in the Olympics but that especially after the Klitshko fight has regressed and is relying too much on the false security of bulkening up.
It seems more and more of the informed discussion is pointing to this.

I like informed discussion.....Heard it for years on here about how Marquez and Mayweather wouldn't be able to handle Manny's work rate..
Freddie Roach is never wrong..
I predict a motivated Joshua beats Ruiz...Like a motivated Lewis beat Rahman and a motivated Norris beat Brown..
Seem to recall experts saying Brown had Norris number..

Watching the following video makes me think that boxing is a "sweet science" and depends a lot on training methods and rote learning through practice and transfer to muscle memory (cerebellum - which is the "hind" brain). The following shows Manny Robles putting Andy Ruiz through training exercises involving throwing clusters of punches and avoiding various simulated return punches.
