Interesting, Pep says that Man City wanted Maguire but they couldn't afford it. I thought City could afford anyone they wanted.

They’ve avoided the inevitable mistake that Dybala would of been, but still ending up paying £15m for a 33 year old, on £6m a year. If fit, he’s a decent option, but this just looks like a payday, for a player happy to sit on the bench.
Maguire, Mandzukic, AWB, and James. Just don’t see the step forward, in all honesty.

Between Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal and United they managed just 3 wins in their combined last 20 premier league games. Apart from Man City and Liverpool, a slight step forward could see them back in the top four at the end of next season.Just John wrote:They’ve avoided the inevitable mistake that Dybala would of been, but still ending up paying £15m for a 33 year old, on £6m a year. Dybala had quality, potential for growth and some reputation. Think that he’d have been a good signing, there’s a lack of quality in that side.

well done united, glad were finally holding firm. were still a way off the top sides but I do actually feel like we are at least heading in the right direction now

Yeah, I like AWB, thought that was great business. Maguire, not so much. Guess my original scepticism about United’s window, was the failure to improve that woeful midfield. Pogba doesn’t want to be there, you’ve lost the workhorse in Herrera, and Lukaku might end up staying there, having made it clear he wants out. Mandzukic deal seems to be off, so if Rashford gets injured, and you eventually sell Lukaku to Inter, you’ve pretty much got no backup, maybe Martial or Greenwood. I’d be worried, if I was a United fan. Defence is one thing, but that midfield is abysmal, and I seriously wonder where the goals are coming from.

Incredible business, getting Cancelo for £28m. Added with Rodri, it just seems Pep has kept things ticking over nicely, with these two extremely tidy additions. Can’t look past them to retain, especially with Liverpool, pretty much stagnating.

i do agree that goals could well be a issue this season, rashford is hardly prolific. still rumours around bruno fernandes which could improve the midfield. our main glaring weakness last season was defence though, in which we have plugged to holes with two young players who should definitely improve us. you might not rate maguire massively but surely you can agree he's a huge improvement on smalling, jones, bailly and rojo.

Those two signings are really top drawer though, and other than left back were their two biggest needs imo - a replacement / competition for Fernandinho and arguably the best right back in world football
I don't buy the whole Ox + Keita are effectively new signings shtick either

Boro have signed Dutch defender Anfernee Dijksteel from Charlton, for an undisclosed fee (we seem to do that a lot lately).
Get your humorous puns in now...
He is just our 3rd new signing (4th if you count keeper Tomas Mejias re-signing).

Sky are reporting that Inter have bid £77 million for Lukaku, and the BBC are saying that a deal is close.
To be honest, I don't think Lukaku is as bad as some people make out. If he goes, then I wish him all the best.

bit of a flat track bully who only does it against the weaker sides. when he first joined he's a player i could handle even with that, but now hes not fit enough, slow and too bulky
refusing to train with the team sums up his attitude recently. get rid for that price and build with players who want to be at the club

to be fair to Lukaku, hes forced the issue lately because he felt being professional was getting him nowhere in a situation where the manager clearly doesn't want him but Woodward was digging in because he didnt want another embarrassing cut price sale against his name.

Hoping Tierney replicates the success of Robertson, and, Luiz, the ageing, liability. Not sure that reassures Arsenal fans worries, or addresses any of their defensive weaknesses.
Djibril Sidibe has joined Everton on a season-long loan
Aaron Mooy heading to Brighton, on a season-long loan
Danny Drinkwater heading to Burnley on a season-loan
Scott Carson heading to Manchester City on season-long loan
Charlie Austin leaving Southampton and joining WBA for £4m
Watford sign Rennes winger, Ismaila Sarr, for a club-record fee
Leicester agree £18m fee with Sampdoria for Dennis Praet
Inter Milan sign Romelu Lukaku from Man U, for £73m
Tottenham sign Ryan Sessegnon for 25m
Unsurprisingly, Andy Carroll is coming home. Budget obviously spent.

Re: Ongoing Transfers thread
Underwhelming window, from the top 6, imo. Think City have done the best business, which is worrying for the league. Not quite sure what to make of United’s window, midfield and attack, completely ignored. Good window for Leicester and a decent one for Everton, trying to bridge that gap. At the other end, I worry for Palace, if Zaha decides to down tools for a lengthy period.

Re: Ongoing Transfers thread
Newcastle signing Andy Carroll seems like a massive waste of time, he'll play a handful of games if they're lucky and make no impact whatsoever, it is a shame that a promising career has been wrecked by injury. That signing is vying with Everton signing Iwobi for worst deadline day signing, he's such an average player and is only known because he was at Arsenal.

Re: Ongoing Transfers thread
It doesn’t come anywhere near the worst deadline day deal. It’s a free transfer, and it’s a one-year deal. Worth the gamble. Not bothered if he can only play a handful of games, because Joelinton is our #9, anyway. We just needed some kind of back-up, to go with, Gayle. PR move too from Ashley, bringing a Geordie lad back to the club.

Re: Ongoing Transfers thread
think City, Spurs and Arsenal can be reasonably happy.
Liverpool I think could've used some more depth, decent risk of burnout for them I think, given the front 3 all played tournament football over the summer.
Not entirely sure United paid a premium for quality or just paid a premium. regardless, I think most would've expected more than a CB and a RB, and they look a bit short up front given they didnt replace Lukaku.
Chelsea hands were mostly tied, though I think long term they'll be stronger for being forced to start drip feeding their young players into the squad

I think Man United were determined to keep things homegrown this year and with no English midfielders or forwards worth buying they didn't bother, not signing Dybala will be a blessing in that respect.

It does in the sense that buying expensive overseas players hasn't worked so going back to basics is worth trying, there isn't a lack of talent at the club just a lack of direction.

which is great if hes brought along at his own pace. as it stands Uniteds main backup to Rashford through the middle is a 17 year old with 3 PL appearances. I'm struggling to work out how a club with Uniteds resources ended up in that position when it's been apparent for a while OGS didnt want Lukaku

will still definitely need a couple more players (cm and rw/st) but what we definitely dont need to do is rush and panic buy. our recruitment has been bad enough recently. im glad were starting to hold firm over transfers instead of being an agents play toy. city dont bow down to agents and players ridiculous demands and do plenty of good transfer business
