European Tour - 2019
First topic message reminder :
New Year, Time for a New Thread.
EuroTour makes it 2019 Debut this week with the Abu Dhabi HSBC Classic Presented by EGA. Next week is Dubai and the following week is the New Saudi Event
Guessing that the EGA Presentation got Abu Dhabi a promotion to a Rolex Series event.
DJ and BK are playing in Abu Dhabi. So is Fleetwood, Stenson, Oosthuizen, RCB, Barnrat, Poulter, and Oleson
Despite the the Hired Guns from USA and Rolex Promotion, Abu Dhabi will have its lowest OWGR rating in 10 yrs. Pelley can't be happy about that.

I'm guessing Rory and a lot of other Euros are waiting until the European tour shows up in Europe.

And this is the one tournament where players are extra nervous to find themselves near the cut-line.GPB wrote:pedro wrote:Nothing. Possible ET Florida swing is apparently one of the first visible instances of the strategic partnership in action.
With the ET having issues with some of its venues in April due to covid regulations in these areas the PGAT have suggested a post Masters Florida swing.
Seems like a smart move if they can pull it off. Not sure how the TV schedule will work because now the ET will be directly up against the PGAT?
Some cynics might not be surprised that months after the PGAT bought into the ET we have ET events happening on US soil.

Interesting article Mac, thanks for sharing.
Given the Covid restrictions, I'm guessing this will be a "one-time" only thing. At least I'm hoping so for the European Tour's sake and health.
And that, of course, begs a question I have no answer to: Just how much of the ET revenue is dependent upon US TV viewing rights?

Yeh, I also think it will be a one time thing, but the more conspiratorially minded might see this as the PGAT opening things up for future US based ET events.
On the TV schedule I was more thinking about in the UK where I assume more people are interested in the PGAT. Sky show both the ET and the PGAT and have more than enough channels to show both, but might be a bit embarrassing if the ET viewing figures are non existent when pitted directly against the PGAT. The 3 PGAT events after the Masters are the Heritage, Zurich classic and Valspar.

Re: European Tour - 2019
We need to rename this thread "DP World Tour".
ET is no more. The new tour will apparently have a $200m + budget witht the DP tour final having a $10m purse.
47 events across 27 countries.
The world of top pro golf is properly getting shaken up at the moment.

On a more serious note, how will this effect RC qualification? It used to be run by the ET, I assume DP tour just takes this over.

Re: European Tour - 2019
Interesting news Mac ... not entirely surprising.
I do think a global tour is inevitable. In some ways the ET is getting ahead of the US PGA tour ... but given that the four majors still hold the most prestige (I think) for professional golfers and that three of the four are played on US soil, I do wonder how long it will take for professional golf to become more F1 like in that respect.

Quite a blow for ET that Rahm isn't bothering to turn up. I am guessing a player in contention for the fedex cup who couldn't be arsed to show up for East Lake would find themselves having to play the bone saw golf league the following season?

Also a bit ridiculous that Morikawa can win their "race long" season points event by simply winning a major and playing three events (two of which in Dubai and Aberdeen he finished t68 and t71...of course TBC what he does in Abu Dhabi this week).
Always been a bit of a stupid points system thing, but this would really highlight it - no blame on Morikawa by the way!

Not sure, but I believe if your are an ET member and win a Major, you get honorary life membership. Plus if has won/wins R2D that might get it for him as well.

Re: European Tour - 2019
I don't think Morikawa winning the R2D is all that crazy. He won a major and a WGC, along with a a T8 at the PGA champs and a T4 at the US Open. That is an all time season from an ET member. It would almost be crazy if he didn't win it.

Oleson appears to be having his day in court. Sounds like he was completely off his tits (pardon the pun) at the time of the alleged incident.

Watched the Dubai Desert Classic final holes. Not that I am an expert, but I think McIlroy blew it. Standing on the 17th tee he was trying with the clubhouse leader. Two lay ups and one of them might have dropped for birdie. Minimum he was in a playoff. Wild drive on 17 and a wild approach on 18 cost him the title. John Bland showed what could be done.

Mcilroy only had 230 yards to the pin. 9/10 he makes it. Was worth going for, and if he didnt go for it in two he would have had to in play off anyway.
Dont think he bottled it, just a bad shot.

What about his decision to go for the green on 17? Also, would driver have been such a bad choice off the tee on 18? I know the water might've come into play, but he had a 7 iron or something into that green on saturday.super_realist wrote:I'm never wrong wrote:Watched the Dubai Desert Classic final holes. Re: European Tour - 2019
Can't find an update DP World Tour thread so I'll use this one.
I don't know if anyone else watched it on a nice sunny day, but the BetFred British Masters had an amazing finish. Soderberg was the leader in the clubhouse for a long time. Olesen was 2 behind on the tee at 17. His shot making, up to that point had been all over the place. Olesen only hits the straightest two shots of the round to get him on the par 5 17th for 2 and sinks a monster putt. Tied with Soderberg on the 18th tee. Another two good shots and he's on the 18th green - 39 feet from the hole. He only goes and sinks it, to repeat Saturdays finish of eagle-birdie. Good crowds in attendance as well.

That was an insane finish. Thunderbear hardly hit a fairway all day and then those two monster putts. Great tournament. The ET needs a player like Thunderbear.
