WWE moving to BT Sports from Sky
WWE moving to BT Sports from Sky
BT Sport is set to announce plans to screen WWE as part of a dramatic shake-up in broadcasting rights for the wrestling franchise.
WWE has for decades been shown exclusively by Sky Sports, but BT is understood to have agreed terms on rights for the next cycle.
An anticipated announcement comes after rival franchise, All Elite Wrestling (AEW), announced a partnership with ITV. The broadcaster is to air an event named Double Or Nothing from Las Vegas, which will include headline matches featuring Kenny Omega and former WWE wrestler Chris Jericho. It will air on the terrestrial channel from May 25.
Vince McMahon, 73 is the CEO of WWE, the world’s largest wrestling company, and continues to run both of its flagship shows, Monday Night Raw and SmackDown Live.
British wrestling became popular in the 1970s and 80s in ITV, with the likes of Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks, becoming the stars of World Of Sport Wrestling. However, in 1988 wrestling was pulled from British TV schedule
When it returned the following year it was the oiled and muscular stars of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) - Hulk Hogan, the Ultimate Warrior and Bret "The Hitman" Hart - who were centre screen.
BT Sport declined to comment on reports it was planning to screen WWE.
