SURREY VS WARWICKSHIRE SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Surrey have named a 14-man squad to travel to Edgbaston for the Specsavers County Championship fixture against Warwickshire starting on 27th May.
Matt Dunn and Jamie Smith are in contention for selection while Jordan Clark has been added to the squad.
Gus Atkinson has been named for the 1st time in a surrey squad (well I cant remember if he has before I'm getting old
)
Sam Curran will miss out after picking up a hamstring injury in the draw with Kent at Beckenham.
Jade Dernbach (calf) and Amar Virdi (side) are working back to fitness in the 2nd XI
There is no place in the squad for either Freddie van Den Bergh, Conor McKerr
or Stuart Meaker.
FULL SQUAD
Rory Burns (c)
Gus Atkinson
Gareth Batty
Scott Borthwick
Jordan Clark
Rikki Clarke
Matt Dunn
Dean Elgar
Ben Foakes
Will Jacks
Morne Morkel
Ryan Patel
Jamie Smith
Mark Stoneman
No idea what has happened to McKerr the club are keeping that under wraps
Atkinson, Clark and Smith to miss out for me
Patel just edges out Clark for the final spot mainly due to his bowling.
Over to you chaps

Cheers, JimBob. Just seen the Club thread which I guess has been updated since your post - that mentions McKerr being out with a heel injury from the Beckenham game.
I tend to agree with you about Atkinson, Clark and Smith missing out.
Dunn seems a direct and natural replacement for McKerr. It probably also slightly helps Dunny's chances that Virdi isn't playing - they are both regarded as number 11s and Surrey don't want two in their line up.
Difficult to see Atkinson and Smith getting a game.
Shoot out between Clark and Patel for Sam's spot. Very hard to call - could go either way but I'll edge towards Patel.

Re: SURREY VS WARWICKSHIRE SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
JimBob on the money with our eleven. I'm sure Olly would have chosen the same!
Toss uncontested, Surrey elect to field. Haven't seen pictures of the track so can't propely comment but still a bit surprised - means we'll be facing Jeetan Patel 4th dig.
Matt Dunn needs one more scalp for 100 first-class wickets.
Olly and all - is there a stream please?

Decent enough bowling - Dunn did himself no harm opening (7-3-16-0) - but no breakthrough yet. They're now back on with Warks having moved to 33/0.

More than a touch concerned Batty has taken two wickets with turning deliveries in session 1 on day 1 when we’ve decided to bowl first....
Have we looked up rather than down?

Hi Olly - hmmm. Having 'em 63/2 seems ok but like you I'm concerned how we're going to do with the bat, particularly against Jeetan Patel fourth dig and have been since we chose to field.
Your use of ''looked up rather than down'' entitles me to repeat another old favourite -
You have two choices on winning the toss [we didn't actually win it but let that go]. You either bat or think about it and then bat.

Tea. 149/3 after 54 overs (there were a couple of rain stoppages). 32 left today provided the weather holds.
Doesn't look as if Warks will be getting too many batting bonus points which'll please JimBob a bit but we could really do with another wicket soon.

9th isn't it? Certainly annoying - in all seriousness, I would have bowled better than Elgar. Absolute buffet over, mainly short and legside = terrible and released the pressure when all the other 5 bowlers had been going at under 3 an over.

A day of changing fortunes for sure. From 165/3 to 186/8 and then to 275/8 at the close.

As I said earler, the real turning point was Elgar's solitary over. It was utterly dreadful and went for 17, really setting Norwell off on his blitz. I largely blame Burns for that. Turning to Elgar was so unnecessary. They were 203/8 at the time with all 5 main bowlers going at under 2.8 an over. We just needed to stick at it and keep applying pressure. There was no need to give the ball to a slow part-timer and hope to buy a wicket.
Despite my ending the day in a rather grumpy mood, I'm pleased for Dunn. After all the struggles he's had in the last few years, he more than deserved a good day. Although his 3 wickets are his real reward, he'll also be chuffed to have sent down 22 overs.

Re: SURREY VS WARWICKSHIRE SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Did I fall asleep and imagine the last year? Must have done as Batty is playing again and we still cannot bowl sides out. Seriously though, the IPL and Central Contracts have ruined the county game. As soon as you have some success, you lose players to the IPL and the England hierarchy can decide on a whim whether you can have your best players for games or not. Yorkshire have suffered from this in recent years - now it's happening to us. Plus add in a very long injury list.

Not doing too well against him first time around - 3 wickets in 5 balls. This is against the bottom side too. We really have gone to pot.

Think Mr Burns has a lot to answer for in this one - firstly the decision at the toss...and secondly that "Elgar" decision yesterday...

Goose - I'll leave you to answer your own question - I reckon you're pretty confident of the answer!

Meanwhile, the stoppages today for bad light earlier and rain now are going to give Warks a tricky problem as to when to declare. Tomorrow's forecast looks a lot better - they're not yet 200 in front and will want more than that before the declaration comes. However, they won't be banking on us turning to jelly as soon as Jeetan Patel gets the ball (however much we think it'll happen) and so have to allow a reasonable amount of time to take 10 wickets. Furthermore, Warks have so far lost 3 out of 3 this season. Being on top now, I doubt they'll be satisfied with merely stopping their losing run - they'll want the win but how much will they be prepared to risk losing in going for it?

But not necessarily the match, JimBob. It'll be interesting to see what happens tomorrow. Likelihood is that Jeetan Patel will go through us like a hot knife through margarine but we have more chance than last night and definitely more chance than we deserve.
PS Where is the Corporal? I want a reliable weather forecast for next week in my neck of the woods. Early reports don't sound too clever but I only trust the Corporal.

Warwickshire will smash it for 20 overs, setting us over 300, get us in before lunch needing more than 4 an over for about 70 overs, which will be interesting as our ace 'all rounder' Elgar scores at just over 4 an hour. Need our top 3 to last a session to escape with a draw, or the weather to help, but like guildford says, I think Patel will go through us in the afternoon

Reason I say this, Warwickshire are going to bat on a fair bit I'd wager - having lost all 3 games so far this season, they'll be keen to secure a draw "at worst" and for this I think they'll want more than setting us 300 in 70 overs - I reckon they'll give themselves 60 overs, likely 300+, doubt they'll come out swinging first thing. Last thing they want is to collapse in a heap tomorrow AM, and leave us a chase of 250
And despite our batting woes, we should be able to see out 60 overs between our batting lineup.

The way the points system works a draw doesnt suit anyone, its set up to try and force results and encourage fighting declarations. That said the way they batted up till the rain doesn't suggest they were in any desperate hurry to make a total, and also that batting conditions are not great. I reckon somewhere between the two, they will want to be well over 200 ahead when the innings ends and wont go out suicidaly for it, but it would be a surprise to me if they bat after lunch. If they get through their overs quickly it still gives them a chance of a win. 300 is way too much for this pitch batting 4th, if they dont back themselves to defend 250 (in two sessions) then they might as well give up on county cricket anyway.

Re: SURREY VS WARWICKSHIRE SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
I am as certain as I can be that we will be batting before lunch. The question for me is - how much before? I would guess for around 30 minutes.
Both sides need a positive result. That still doesn't guarantee one but it makes it more likely.
That will give us a chance of a win although Warks remain favourites with Patel as their figurehead. If we are to win, I would be looking to Jacks to play a prominent role.

Re: SURREY VS WARWICKSHIRE SPECSAVERS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Should be a full days play today. Theres a bit of grey cloud around and damp in the air but no rain forecast. Cloud is due to go away late afternoon so there should be no issues with light.
Good county bowling conditions. All in furthers Guilfords argument above, theres a strong chance of a result and both sides need one. Expect a competitive declaration or Surrey to fold them up quickly.
Just in regard to the central contracts comment someone made above. Surrey are very lucky they exist, theyd be in worse straights without them. The world cup and associated fixtures were always a thing. All of Surreys players who have gone to it are covered by central contracts awarded last summer. This means they knew in the off season which players where most likely to be missing for this period, and importantly could budget to cover for them knowing their wages were covered.
Whilst it doesnt help to be missing Curran, Roy (albeit that they have 4 other quality top order batsmen and he plays very little CC) and Plunkett they have been able to plan and mitigate for these losses. When you look at the squad its still stacked, Elgar came in to cover the period when players were gone for the world cup. Their woes are much more to do with the injuries (Pope, otherCurran, Vidri) and general under performance (Stoneman in particular). I feel a lot more for Hampshire who have had two players called up for England who aren't under central contracts and who they couldn't have comfortably funded and planned cover for in this period.
