ICC Cricket World Cup - Part 4
First topic message reminder :
Yes, England expected to be unchanged. Long boundaries apparently, which will suit England's excellent running ability!
If there were a decent replacement in the wings, I think Rashid's place would be under severe threat. He's got figures of 7/403 from 69 overs in the World Cup so far, which is hardly illuminating stuff.

Starc gets Jonny ...might not be a bad thing as he can rest that ankle now ? Done his job I think.
Hundred more needed. Lots of time. But they'll go after Root now...

Bairstow goes, wastes a review, and some time too!

Roy loves batting against Australia. Three of his nine ODI centuries have come against the Aussies.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup - Part 4
a nervy start for Root as he gloves one for 4 straight away, but Starc then gave a couple of Hit Me stuff and Root's on his way. , This could be over pretty soon, perhaps another 10 overs if Roy stays.

Johnny might feel unlucky to get out to Starc that over given the filth he's served up to Joe Root ...
Roy still motoring . One more over for a match. Is there really a lot of rain approaching ?

Meant to be around an hour of the light stuff starting about 5 minutes ago....don't think it'll be enough to take them off.

That's tough on Jason Roy. Didn't deserve that. Poor decision. If only Bairstow preserved the review.

No matter what we get a result.
That dismissal sickens me, the Aussies knew full well that he did not touch that, they were just playing on Dharmassena's total incompetence.

Oh dear...Roy is given out - absolute howler ! But Jonny had used the blessed review unnecessarily earlier on...blast . Have to remember it is only one review in ODI ...certainly Roy had forgetten it .
Robbed of a hundred : hope he doesn't get fined for dissent . And suddenly Australia will feel things are going their way ...will be flinging everything at Morgan.
What a horrible umpiring mistake . He didn't even look sure himself ...a very late and hesitant raising of the finger. Grrr.

Terrible call from the umpire to send Roy packing. Since Bairstow wasted the review, he couldn't overturn the call. Roy absolutely deserved a ton.

Was very odd. He raised his finger, half lowered it, then re-raised.
Oh well, Roy will just have to get a century on Sunday now!

It was a horrible call but there is no way known to man that the Aussies thought he hit that, that was an appeal for nothing and they influenced an exceedingly poor umpire. Poor cricket all around.

I guess. But he so deserved one today. I know the umpires shouldn't really be changing decisions depending on availability of reviews ; but if Dharmasena was in any doubt - which he seemed to be - surely you give it not out ? Then if the fielding team are sure they review and the tell tale spike will settle it...
Just dreadful umpiring. He must not stand in the final.
(Actually I think the umpire should be able to consult the TV umpire for a decision like that of his own volition. Just as he would for a stumping or run out . Simple rule change )

Regardless of reviews, if he has any doubt he goes with the batsman? Isn't that convention?
Anyone know enough about the demerit point system to know if Roy will be in trouble for standing and arguing?
Re: ICC Cricket World Cup - Part 4
Roy will get a demerit point automatically for standing and arguing but I believe it will be overturned given the howler of the appeal and decision.

I don't know ...think they were just trying to stop a "wide" call. And hoping. They were pretty desperate.
Shouldn't matter , except to Roy. Gives Morgan a chance to play himself back into some sort of form after being bounced around lately... He will get plenty of practice with the short ball from these two

trying to avoid a wide call by appealing? That's not cheating is it?

Not even the worst piece of umpiring can make this game look vaguely close.
Pretty incredible stuff all round from England.

I think its just a poor call, compounded by England making a poor call when Bairstow threw away the review. it happens

I checked up.
Roy isn't currently on the demerit list so he has 0 points. He'd need 4 to earn a suspension. The last player to get more than 1 point for an incident was Stuart Law in 2018 and he got 3 points for this:
Stuart Law repeatedly said used obscene language with the word 'cheats' as he walked past the 4th umpire. He then looked at and directed a comment to the 4th umpire that 'Rahane is a cheat'.
I can only see players getting 4 or more points for a singular incident on two occasions; when Sri Lanka refused to take the field at the start of day's play and Steve Smith for his part in sandpaper gate.
So Roy should be fine. Unlikely he'll get more than 1 and isn't close to a ban at the moment.
Re: ICC Cricket World Cup - Part 4
Theres on off spotting of rain. Feels like there could be storms later. But whenever it comes the game is done. Really showing up that it's not the pitch, England out bowled and out batted Aus and helf their nerve better.

Just to get back to the game position - at half way, England were 171-2. Would be a good platform for 375-400. As it is, they needed 53 in 25 overs....
Anyone expected this afternoon to be this stress free?

These two have batted well since that Roy shocker. Another couple of wickets at that point could have made it interesting. They weathered Starc and Cummins who had to be unleashed at that point and now the game really is done

Theres enough rain to call it drizzle now. It would be horrendous if they came off and we had to wait out for a cancellation.
I assume they'll stay on longer than they might normally just to see out the last few runs

If they came off could the captains not just shake hands? Or would they not do that in a World Cup semi-final?

Would Australia even want to hang around for hours just to have the formalities completed ? Probably give Smith another over so it could finish in five minutes

It'd be especially farcical if they had to come back tomorrow.
Also interesting to take drinks with weather about and potentially 5 overs/20 minutes away from a conclusion. Cricket is strange sometimes.
England hurrying now though. The next 10 overs could go 0-7 and we'd still only be 3 runs behind D/L par...
