Jesus, reading things like this on this thread really grinds my gears. Maybe gun ownership for nutters in the US should be encouraged if it helps to eliminate similar bastardising of the language.
Talking of the USA, I heard Kamala today referring to voters as “folks”. When did this start?
The word “folksy” was a vital ingredient to be a candidate for President some time after Reagan. Al Gore made a right prat out of himself by pretending to be Bing Crosby instead of an on-the-spectrum nerd. W Bush, like Reagan, was excused of his imbecility because he could “do” folksy.
I can’t be sure but I strongly suspect Obama was one for the folking too.
You won’t hear of voters , citizens, or even people. Only “folks” now..

Closest thing to "friends" in the politico speak without looking too desperate.....
Started long before "I mispoke" which has taken the place of "I'm a low-life lying sellout politician".

FFS Radio 2 been playing Xmas songs all day!
OK, understand will get the adverts on tv, music in shops etc but too early for radio play.
As the well worn joke goes, there's 12 days of Xmas and none of them are in November.

I’m not a fan of Christmas songs, that’s putting it mildly. I despise them. I even despise Fairytale In New York and the other famous ones make me want to put pins in my ears.
Imagine my annoyance when I recently heard a Christmas theme song that I hadn’t heard before to the best of my knowledge, which was decades old. ‘Christmas Wrapping’ by the Waitresses. It’s so old that they performed on The Old Grey Whistle Test. By some miracle I hadn’t heard it to death since it’s release in 1981 so I ,ahem *like* it.

I don't mind Xmas songs but in December. In fact some of them I do really like, mix of nostalgia and some good tunes. It's when they're played to death and start in Nov that winds me up.

Alas, there are demonstrably not twelve days of Christmas now. If you have ever worked in retail it takes all the joy out of a seasonal song. Indeed, you will forever be " hooked on Christmas Classics" in the same way as you'd be hooked on meth.
Other things that grind my gears about Christmas is
People saying ,'We must meet up/do something before ___" .Measuring time as if it's not an arbitrary thing to do.
Obligation to see family. We don't bother with them for a very good reason.
The knowledge that hot on the heels of it comes New Year's and another episode of forced behaviour.
Spending money on presents. Having to look suitably positive when opening one's own.
Make it every other year so that we can feel the benefit. As it is it's just a banal repetitive exercise in superficiality.

I remember the feeling of pride in owning a twelve inch piece of vinyl. Pretty sure that I fell for this scam on many an occasion. The b-side would be an extended re-mix which simply meant a few more minutes of a drum machine, which I think was the case with "Rock Me Amadeus". Which I still enjoyed.
I wish that I was born a few years earlier when the era was New Wave and post punk instead of synthesised pap that you had to sift through.
Between the years of The Boomtown Rats and Live Aid ,or the late seventies to 1984, was a slow gradual decline from excellence to excrement.
Geldof wasn't anywhere near as much of a pain, neither was Sting. Before he and David Byrne became ambassadors for 'big' things instead of making decent music with their previous bands.

Confess I get a bit stressed in the lead up ... less so now as I don't have to worry so much about keeping kids happy etc ; or driving miles to complete the family roundup. Really start to enjoy it about late evening after a number of glasses and ready for my party turn performing Fairytale of New York with one of my sister's neighbours (who is rather more tuneful than I) Once a year is probably about right though

Luckily I don't have to sing, the family's scattered around the world and most shopping can be done on Amazon. It's all about cooking and maintaining a consistent level of blissful drunkeness.

The 12 inch of Christmas Wrapping wasn't even an extended version or re-mix - exactly the same song but on a larger piece of vinyl. That ground my gears.
