F1 2020 Season
First topic message reminder :
Thought I'd start this thread since no-one else has yet.
First glimpse of this season's cars as Haas unveil their entry for this year. Not really much difference visually from last season, but then there haven't been any major rule changes:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/51405017
Have to say I quite like this livery.
Feel free to add more pics as they are released...

There’s a theory that the front end instability is due to the new nose concept Newey has implemented. All those holes are redirecting air flow into the wrong area, causing a vortex type scenario.

Re: F1 2020 Season
Fluffed / jumped start by Bottas ruined his chance to challenge for the win today - though Hamilton was in such imperious form, I'm not sure he could have stayed with him, even if he'd held on to 2nd at the start. Decent recovery drive, but he can't afford any more mistakes like that if he want to keep his title ambitions alive.
Blistering start by Verstappen...made amends for putting his car in the wall on the parade lap. Seemed to make light of the issues dogging the car - though he complained a fair bit about his tyres. Also a decent comeback by Albon to finish 5th. Car looked better in race trim than quali.
Stroll did well to only drop 1 place and finish 4th. Bloody good considering who was ahead of him. Not such a great race for Perez, but another decent points finish.
Similar story with Ferrari - Vettel finishing 1 place below where he started, while Leclerc had an uncharacteristically bad race, finishing out of the points...behind a Haas of all things. Enjoyed his duel with Sainz, before the McLaren finally got ahead of him.
Pleased to see Ricciardo bag some points for Renault.
Surprised to see Lando have such a bad race...wonder where it went wrong for him to finish so far behind his team mate.

Well the wrong kind of vortex anyway. Some are essential...others are decidedly undesirable...

Re: F1 2020 Season
Major structural changes at Ferrari. New ‘performance department’ to be headed by Enrico Cardile. Working closely with Rory Byrne and David Sanchez.

It’s more just a shuffle of staff really, playing musical chairs, and see what new department you end up leading. Ferrari fans get excited when they hear Rory Byrne’s name, but he’s been an advisor there for a few years anyway. Binotto still at the helm, so we’ll see how this goes.

Byrne’s been an adviser for a while, the Italians just don’t listen to his recommendations. Typical delusional mentalityJust John wrote:It’s more just a shuffle of staff really, playing musical chairs, and see what new department you end up leading. Re: F1 2020 Season
Laurence Stroll has offered Sebastian Vettel a 1 year deal for 2021. Vettel is hesitant over committing himself for longer as Aston Martin’s competitiveness is the issue. Especially when the others get their acts together.
Sergio Perez has been lined up to replacement Kimi Raikkonen at Alfa Romeo. Mick Schumacher likely to partner him.

Re: F1 2020 Season
If Albon is retained at RB, then no real alternative for, Vettel. Can remain competitive in the 2020 Mercedes, and it keeps his options open. Not sure what it says for AM though. A one year deal is hardly a sign of total commitment from Vettel, and worth the hassle of removing Perez and his sponsors for.
As for Alfa, I do think it’s time for Kimi to depart. Not overly convinced on Mick as of yet. The star seems to be Robert Shwartzman, former Toyota Racing series champion, current F3 champion, and leading the F2 championship. He’s also owned by Ferrari, and highly rated by, Helmut Marko.

Re: F1 2020 Season
Heh. Much as I thought. Aston will likely be competitive next season if they do end up using / copying Mercedes' car from this season, but after that...who knows?
Wonder if Seb is holding out for an offer from Red Bull after all? No guarantees they'd be a better choice, but he knows the team (but also has some baggage). Also little chance of him being anything other than a wingman for Max.
Interesting to see Rory Byrne has been put in charge of the design team for Ferrari's 2022 car. Great opportunity for him to stamp his mark on the team. Changing their management structure from a flatter, cross-working structure, to a more segmented approach with each team focusing on one particular thing. Pros and cons to both, but obviously the current system isn't working.
It'll be sad if Perez does have to take a backward step to Alfa, but I suppose its better than having no seat at all...and Kimi definitely looks like he's already in retirement, so it can only benefit the team.
Will also be good to finally see Schumi Jr in a F1 car, if that comes off. Guess that will make Giovinazzi the reserve driver?

Re: F1 2020 Season
Mick Schumacher’s biggest issue in F2 has been tyre management. Schwarzman and Illot, both Ferrari drivers, are vastly better at it. Also Mick has been reckless. He should’ve won the first race of the season but went all Hail Mary and screwed up god race.
Mick will go to Alfa Romeo
Schwarzman probably to Haas. Also ignore what Marko says, only a few weeks ago he was talking up Schumacher. He’s just winding up Ferrari as per usual.
As for Vettel, there’s no potent committing 3 years if Aston Martin end up nowhere in 2022 best to see what pans out.
@dyrewolfe unfortunately for Giovinazzi losing the seat at Alfa probably ends his career. He’ll go into Ferrari’s sports car team and simulator work.

Hockenheim has withdrawn itself from a potential slot on the 2020 calendar. Hockenheim was to part of a triple header - Imola, Portimao and Hockenheim.

Re: F1 2020 Season
Got to give LM credit for getting this all done. Shame RB & Ferrari have let down the Championship, but at least we get to see different tracks/locations, and doing something out of the norm, in terms of the schedule.

Re: F1 2020 Season
Also worth pointing out Imola isn’t part of an Italian triple header because Ferrari didn’t back that circuit as it’s considered Toro Rosso’s ‘home track’.

It'll be nice to see those circuits again. Be a bit of a different challenge for the drivers too.
Particularly looking forward to seeing how they've overhauled Imola.

Re: F1 2020 Season
Good to see Imola back, even if I doubt the current formula will allow for any on track action. Only a 2 day event so presumable one practice session.
Ditto the Nurburgring
Can't really comment on portimao.
Wonder if this becomes a precursor to certain grand Prix rotating annually again.

Fiat boss John Elkann says he doesn’t expect Ferrari to win races until 2022. Has given Binotto backing until then. Says Vettel’s departure was due to team not giving a champion the opportunity to win.

Re: F1 2020 Season
Two other small details:
Imola GP will be name ‘Emilia Romagna Grand Prix’ in honour to the region where the track is located. And additional the ‘San Marino’ title seems to have become exclusive to MotoGP.
Nürburgring GP will be named ‘Eifel Grand Prix’ as Hockenheim owns the name ‘German Grand Prix’.

Felt ill and had dizziness in Hungary, didn’t he? Not surprised, by the news. Someone in the paddock had to contract it at some point. Interesting to see how this develops, and see if Esteban Gutierrez is given a drive.

Albon trashes his Red Bull in FP2. Pressure must be growing with the likes of Vettel and Hulkenberg on the market.

After wasting countless hours working on the ‘aero efficiency’ on the the SF1000, Ferrari stripped it all off to get competitive in qualifying. Brainless.

Re: F1 2020 Season
Depressing.
Mercedes over a second quicker than anyone else. Hamilton 3/10ths quicker than Bottas. Looking at another cruise to his 7th British GP win.
At least it looks like there could be a good scrap between Verstappen and Leclerc for the last podium spot.
Great effort by Norris to get 5th...wonder if he'll be able to keep the Pink Mercedes of Stroll behind him?
Pretty decent showing by Renault with both Ocon & Ricciardo in the top 10. Vettel looking well off the pace...though I'd expect him to make up a few places during the race.

Sad really. I was expecting Albon to do pretty well at his "home" GP. Still a chance for him to come back in the race, but his qualifying is really hurting his points-scoring opportunities.
Hulk would be a good choice for RB, if they decide to demote, or dispense entirely with Alex. Seems like a good team player - little or no friction in the garage between him and Max.

Re: F1 2020 Season
Vettel probably would’ve been better off staying at home this weekend. Intercooler failed in FP1. There was pedal issues in FP2 and FP3 - he’s having issues with the brake pedal. Not overly reassuring at a high speed circuit like Silverstone.

Also don’t see LeClerc holding p4 in the race. Race pace simulation was awful yesterday

Harsh on Hulk that P13. Tenth off Stroll at the end of Q2 was the difference.
Norris looking like he’s quite comfortably quicker than Sainz on Saturday’s now.

The end is near for Alexander Albon at Red Bull Racing. Dr mateschitz is still in talks with Vettel’s father - hence why the Aston Martin deal hasn’t been concluded.

I think we pretty much knew this was going to happen. Never truly believed Vettel had any intention of signing for AM. It was Merc, RB or retirement.
Hulk’s comeback might end before it’s even started.

Combination of poor driver, and just a tinpot team not knowing how to extract the best out of the car they’ve copied.

Well at least we can stop pretending Bottas can mount a title challenge.
To be fair Stroll, he's upped his game this year (not saying that much). Perez has been a big disappointment to me before this race.
