First topic message reminder :

Thought I'd start this thread since no-one else has yet.

First glimpse of this season's cars as Haas unveil their entry for this year. Not really much difference visually from last season, but then there haven't been any major rule changes:

Have to say I quite like this livery.

Feel free to add more pics as they are released...

Just John wrote:Mazepin is poor. Grosjean’s time was up, but this replacement is very underwhelming. Tbh, right now, the Williams and Haas seats are poisoned chalices, literally career enders.

This is a perfect example of what I was talking about. If it were up to me, drivers would have to have at least won a GP3 or F2 title to be eligible for F1.

Seems there are too many getting picked on the basis of a few good races, rather than showing enough consistency over a season to pick up the big trophies. Either that or simply being the best of an underwhelming bunch in a young driver programme.

I don’t know if you’re trolling or Mick Schumacher peed on your lawn...
Schumacher wasn’t getting an F1 seat because of his father, he’s getting a seat because he won F3 championship and he’s about to win F2 as well.
I’ve followed Antonio Giovinazzi for a very long time and whilst he has a lot of talent, when Ferrari is paying for seat, it’s not well taken when you smash the car up far too frequently.
Giovinazzi was expected to pension off Raikkonen but that’s not likely to happen in these first two seasons. If he gets the opportunity in 2021 Giovinazzi needs to take it or it’s career over

In rather unsurprising news Lance Stroll confirmed he had covid19 at the Eifel GP. Why they made up the ‘pooed his pants’ story is a mystery

Should pretty much mean Mazepin gets one off the seats - offsets the loss of sponsors money that Grosjean’s Swiss banker friends coughed up.
Could now definitely see it being a Ferrari junior in the other car.

Dmitry Mazepin acquired a seat for his son by offering a financial package worth £25m over two years. No wonder Illot missed out. Ludicrous pay driver situation

You say its ludicrous, Mazepin still has to get the F1 Super License to drive, its not like he's some bum off the streets.

Imagine giving Lance equal blame for Max driving into him.

Lance was ahead and on the racing line ffs.

Admittedly I'd be blaming Max even if it was Lance's fault Laugh but Lance was ahead, on a fast lap, on the racing line, and Max leaves his front wheel in front of Lance's rear like the mongo he is.

Williams seems to be hinting that both Russell and Lafiti will lose their seats. Perez seems pretty confident he’s getting one of those seats. Looks like anyone with really deep pockets could land the other teams one.

I think he was at least aware before the corner, and turned in like he was defending pole position into T1 but the onus is on Max to withdraw. All in all a bit of stupid accident that only really ended up costing the teams involved

On the plus side it would be great to see Perez or Hulk in a Red Bull.

Also good to see so many drivers struggling to get to grips with the Portimao circuit. Could make for an interesting qualifying...and race...

I’d personally go with Perez. More consistent point scorer, extremely good on tyres, brings financial backing, and shown to be more ruthless, when an opportunity arises. I like Hulkenberg, but I’m not sure its that much of a step up to Albon. He’s known to make mistakes, and the reason why he’s never had that podium, in comparison to the eight that Perez has achieved, is because he lacks that ruthless streak.

I’d imagine Max will give the nod to his friend Hulkenberg though.

I don’t think Dr Mateschitz would need the money from Perez. They probably want a stable partnership.
I don’t agree that Perez is better than Hulkenberg either. Being a red bull driver shouldn’t be influenced by money or tyre management capabilities.

A donation to one of the FIA’s charities will solve the situation, just ask Vettel when he had a meltdown with the late Charlie Whiting.

Here's a thought: why don't drain covers on race tracks have some sort of fastening mechanism designed in, so they don't present a danger to cars running over them and require marshals to spend ages either temporarily welding them in place...or in this case removing them and filling the holes with concrete?

Yeah. Russell’s problem is a Sunday. He hasn’t been able to convert, and Kubica out-pointed him last year, and Latifi has got Williams’ best placed finish this season.

Oh well - so much for the new, slippery track mixing things up. No surprises in Q3.

Hamilton on pole by 1/10th. Bottas 2nd
Verstappen 3rd, Leclerc 4th
Perez 5th, Albon 6th
Sainz 7th, Norris 8th
Gasly 9th, Ricciardo 10th

Could be some fun and games tomorrow with driver errors and one or two Safety Cars...we can but hope anyway...

He's still proven himself to be way faster than Latifi.

Seriously!?!  Laugh

That "best placed finish" was 11th in the first race of the season...a highly attritional race if you recall with 7 DNFs...including Russell. Aside from that Latifi has been wretched.

EDIT: tell a lie...Latifi also managed 11th at Monza. However Russell finished 11th at Mugello...another highly attritional race.

So results-wise there has been nothing between them, while Russell has always managed to out-qualify Latifi. Russell has also had 3 DNFs this season, while Latifi has had none.

Not sure beating Latifi is much to write home about either tbh.

That said he's clearly going to be better than whoever gets behind the wheel at Williams and Haas next year.

Another rather boring race, following a wonderfully chaotic start. Thought we might get some serious rain, but it just turned out to be a light shower and it settled into a fairly predictable outcome.

Was great seeing Sainz passing the Mercs early on and actually leading for a few laps. But I guess that was never going to last. Similar thing with Verstappen...looked very racy early on but faded as the laps racked up. Possibly the most surprising thing was seeing Raikkonen in 6th at one point!

At least got to see a bit of a duel between Hamilton & Bottas. Thought Valtteri might actually win this one, when Lewis was looking a bit tentative. But as usual LH "dug deep" and found the pace to beat him yet again.

Again Max quickest of the rest, but still nowhere near the Silver Arrows. Another awful race for Alex...actually lapped by his team mate. Only mitigating circumstance is that he made 2 stops to Max's 1.

Another great race for Leclerc, showing the Ferrari is reasonably competitive and hanging on to his 4th quali spot.

Fantastic drive by Gasly for 5th. Based on the season so far though it seems like it was just one of those tracks / set of conditions that favour AT. But the gap between him and Kvyat is just ridiculous.

Decent race for Sainz & McLaren with a 6th place.

Perez again showing RP / AM what they're going to be missing, with a respectable 7th after an early bump with Verstappen spun him off. Absolute shocker for Stroll...so bad he got flagged AND penalised for exceeding track limits, not to mention ruining Norris' race with a clumsy attempted overtake. Eventually got retired while running last. In any other team he'd be the one being shown the door...

Some nice racing involving Perez, Ocon, Sainz and one or two others, but generally a fairly forgettable race...again except for LH breaking yet another record for most race wins.

Since Albon got a podium he has had his three worse races.  Some are saying the pressure has got to him.  Meanwhile Gasly was surely driver of the day today (Gasly 5th, Albon 12th, Kyvat 19th) - and he has been getting better and better throughout the season.  It is a really strange one because Red Bull will now want to keep Gasly rather than him being poached by another team (e.g. Renault), yet surely they will have to go for Perez or Hulkenberg for the second seat at Red Bull.

Don’t really see what either racing point did wrong in the Perez/Verstappen incident or the Stroll/Norris one - both had made the overtake around the outside and got shunted off the road by the car on the inside refusing to get out of the throttle (see how Ocon gave Perez room when he pulled the same move into turn 1 for how it should be done). Ludicrous Stroll was penalised for it, no consistency but hey one happened on lap 1 and apparently anything is allowed on lap 1

Shame the rain didn’t come in any great way - once the first 10 laps were over it was the usual Mercedes procession with a bit of midfield scrapping. How much longer till the regulation changes...

Come on Olly - I know you like to troll, but it feels like you're not even trying anymore.

The Perez / Verstappen incident happened early in the race while the cars were still bunched together and the overtake was through a corner.

Stroll's collision with Norris happened much later...no other cars around and on the main straight. He needs to take a leaf out of Gasly's book on how to avoid running into cars in front of him. Norris was already defending the outside line and it was ill-advised at best to try and go even wider...right to the track limits, to pass him. Personally I'd call it idiotic. Why didn't he try a dive up the inside where there was clearly more room?

Sadly we have to wait until 2022 for the new regs to kick in. So at least another season of Mercedes walking away with the title. F1 is becoming such a 1-team sport its not even funny any more.

I used to complain that Schumacher only won 5 in a row at Ferrari because he didn't have any serious competition and I've been feeling the same way about Hamilton for the last few seasons. 8 world titles sounds great, but when you see how easily he's winning, it does rather take the shine off it.
