PGATour Running Commentary - Aug 2020
First topic message reminder :
PGATour Running Commentary- Aug 2020
1. Last week: Justin Thomas overcame a 4 shot deficit to win the WGC-FEDEX St Jude by three shots over a four players of Tom Lewis, Daniel Berger, Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka Richie Werenski won the Barracuda event, by one point over Troy Merritt.
2. After he won the Memorial, Jon Rahm took the #1 OWGR ranking from Rory, and now after winning the FEDEX, Justin Thomas took the #1 spot.
3. This week is the PGA Championship, with most of the OWGR Top 100 players in the field. The tournament venue is at Harding Park, which has hosted two WGC tournaments in the last 20 years. Here are some finishes by players in this years field: Woods (1), Garcia (3), Stenson (3), GMac (6), Furyk (15)Poulter (18), Mickelson (29), Scott (29), ZJohnson (43), The Match play was played at Harding Park in 2015, won by Rory, beating Woodland in finals. Players advancing to the Round of 16, include Willett, Furyk, Casey, Oosty, Fleetwood, Fowler, Hideki, and Leishman.
4. Only two more tournaments to qualify for the FEDEX playoffs, some notable players that are currently inside the Top 125, but probably have not clinched a spot in the Northern Trust (Tom Lewis (#117), Russell Knox (#120, Paul Casey (#121), Charl Schwartzel (#123). Some players just barely outside the Top 125 include Nick Watney, Zach Johnson, Matt Wallace, Shane Lowry, RCB, Sergio, and Justin Rose. Some players that need a big week to get inside the Top 125 include Willett, Dufner, Power, Walker, Stenson

The key words are "too much". Why are you refuting that?

Good point.super_realist wrote:Yes, but the point of it is to make golf more interesting not stop certain players from winning.
Golf isn't interesting at the moment when people are flicking a ball 70 yards off the fairway or 90 yards away in the rough following a monster drive.
Poulters rsolution requires zero technological change and seems pretty logical. A ball has to undergo a whole load of R and D and testing.
It's particularly bad on the PGA because of the dreary courses. Perhaps they need to move the venues around to areas where weather is less favourable or windy, like Chicago, or set courses up more like US Open venues.

BDC's tactics a bit hit and miss at the moment.

He's ripping it up now.
Course playing a lot easier than April by the looks of it. Even Botox playing well considered his year of rust. Must have got sufficient reps in.

I feel like Tiger is making a point out there. And that point is that shot shaping and controlling the ball is also part of the game. I doubt he can maintain this form but he is trying to put on a shot shaping exhibition.

Mac, I think Tiger has been listening to Super. I didn't see the mad axeman swing. Just putting it into play and getting on with it. If he continues like that, and his back doesn't let him down he will be right up there.McLaren wrote:I feel like Tiger is making a point out there. I was more thinking along the lines that Tigers knows he is no longer the biggest hitter but that he is still the shot shaping master. An FU to Bryson.

Commentators were saying that his back was causing him trouble after he dollied a shot up the fairway on a par 5 and he had to zig zag his way up a small incline.I'm never wrong wrote:Mac, I think Tiger has been listening to Super. Given what we know about Tiger it is almost certain that he will have a burning desire to take out BDC.

Think he's done as a truly world class golfer now. Lacks consistency and his attitude appears to lack any hunger. Can't blame him. If I had hundreds of millions in the bank I doubt I'd be that motivated either. Ditto Gordon Spieth.

Mac, Tiger will have to complete his 2nd round on Saturday morning. Probably about 8-9 holes. They will restart at 7:30 et.
I don't think anyone who teed off in the morning wave yesterday will finish today.
Speculation: Third round will start about 10:15- 10:30 et tomorrow with a split tee start. Cut is Low 50 and ties, no 10 shot rule.
Pretty sure round 4 is going to be a split tee start as well. Starting about 8 am et as they are scheduled to finish about 3 pm et.

With the course playing so soft, and Rory supposedly being a soft course specialist, is that one of the most disgraceful performances from a top player? It is one thing to play bad but he looked like he just wasn't thinking out there.

Re: PGATour Running Commentary - Aug 2020
It's probably never played easier Mac.
I don't often call any sportsmen (or sportspeople) out for a lack of bottle but he seems to freeze at the big occasion these days. He definitely bottled it at The Open and he seems terrified of August these days.
I really don't think it's a course you have to overpower other than the par 5's which can give you a nice advantage. You can just plot your way around like Zach Johnson or Mike Weir.
McIlroy's course management seems to be non existent.

I’d say he’s got the mid career dip but it’s in danger of being much more than just a dip. I remember people like Westwood & Stenson being world top 20 then slumping to outside the 200s only to reinvent themselves and come back to WN1 for the former and an open championship win for the latter. Having said that, remember David Duval. When he was WN1 nobody would have forecast the steepness of his decline.
I suppose what I’m trying to say is that I don’t think he’s finished at all. He’s definitely lost at the moment though, probably why he’s consulting Butch. I’d guess he needs Rotella rather than Butch though and JP back on the bag.

Shout out to Mr. B. Langer. 63 y/o and now at -5. Impressive on a course that must be playing very long for him, even if firing into the greens is being helped.

But as is always the case with him he needs to learn there are too many great players out there to claw back from a 75. He could shoot a 66 today and still be 4 or 5 back.

What I mean is that will be to a certain marker on the tee, from which the course will very seldom be played as they move around. The card may well say that, but in reality the holes may be to that measurement one day out of four at the very best.

Maybe it's not so dumb after all; just an acknowledgment that the pretence of knowing a distance to a yard is more or less pointless, even for this level of player.I'm never wrong wrote:The championship cards are apparently that way Super; members play of shorter tees.
