2021 England v NZ / World Test Championship Final Tipping Competition
2021 England v NZ / World Test Championship Final
Tipping Competition Rules:
1.
Pick 2 (two) batsmen and 2 (two) bowlers from both England and New Zealand (India and NZ for the WTC Final) whom you think will score the most runs and take the most wickets. You get both batting and bowling points per innings so a bowler who scores runs has both batting and bowling scores added together.
e.g.
Conway, Williamson, Jamieson, Wagner
Sibley, Root, Broad, Anderson
2.
Pick 1 (one) fielder from each team; excluding wicket keepers for most catches in the Series.
It can be a bowler (for c&b) if you want.
e.g.
Taylor, Pope
3.
Select which wicket keeper will take the greatest number of catches, stumpings and run outs combined for each Test.
If a wicket keeper is injured then the replacement keeper's figures shall be used.
e.g.
Bracey or Watling... or "the same" amount of dismissals.
4.
Predict the Toss:
a) Who wins the toss?
e.g.
New Zealand
b) Winning captain's decision - bat or field?
e.g.
Bat
5.
a) Predict the Test result. 150 points for WTC Final.
e.g.
New Zealand
Selections must be posted a minimum one (1) hour before the commencement of play. No PM reminders shall be sent.
Scoring:
1.
1 point for every run scored by your nominated batsmen. Add together for each Test.
Bonus 20 points for 100 runs.
extra 25 points for 150 runs.
extra 40 points for 200 runs.
extra 50 points for 250 runs.
extra 60 bonus points for 300+ runs.
Note: the batting & bowling score bonuses accumulate so;
Batting:
100 runs = 120 points. A player scores 127 + 20 = 147 points.
150 runs = 195 points. A player scores 176 + 20 + 25 = 221 points.
200 runs = 285 points. A player scores 243 + 20 + 25 + 40 = 328 points.
250 runs = 385 points. A player scores 282 + 20 + 25 + 40 + 50 = 417 points
300+ runs = 445 points. A player scores 309 + 20 + 25 + 40 + 50 + 60 = 504 points.
Bowling:
20 points per wicket with a bonus 50 points for a 5-fer.
An extra 35 points for 6-fer, 40 for 7-fer, 45 for 8-fer, 50 for 9-fer.
An extra 100 bonus points for a 10-fer.
5 wickets = 100 + 50 = 150 points
6 wickets = 120 + 50 + 35 = 205 points.
7 wickets = 140 + 50 + 35 + 40 = 265 points
8 wickets = 160 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 = 330 points
9 wickets = 180 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 + 50 = 400 points
10 wickets = 200 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 + 50 + 100 = 520 points
Caught and bowled = 20 points for the wicket + 25 bonus points for the catch = 45 points.
2.
Fielder catches: Your nominated fieldsmen earn you 25 points per catch and 25 points for a run out.
3.
Wicket keepers: 50 points for correct selection. e,g. - Bracey or Watling.
Or if you think they will take the same number of total dismissals per innings - then nominate "the same" = 50 points.
If they take the same number of catches and stumpings (combined) and you've picked either one of the keepers - then 25 points only.
4.
a) Correctly predict who wins the toss = 15 points
b) Correctly predict what the winning Captain decides to do = 15 points - only for those with part a) above correct; no points if your a) was incorrect.
5.
a) Correctly predict the winning team for each Test = 100 points. (1st Test 50 points)
b) If you guess both Test Match outcomes correctly then there is a further 100 point bonus = 250 points.
Note: Correctly predict a "Draw" = 100 points
c) Bonus points for WTC Final = 150 points
If one (or more) of your selected players gets injured during a match or is dropped from the Test side after a match, then you’ll have the opportunity to select replacement players – either as it happens - for the injured player or before the next Test commences (for a player who gets dropped). Doesn’t have to be the actual substitute player – it can be somebody else already in the team. However, you don’t receive any of their previous points – you must start accumulating points from scratch with them.

Re: 2021 England v NZ / World Test Championship Final Tipping Competition
Firstly my apologies to you all for being too slow off the blocks....
In order for us all to have some extra interest in the 1st Test at Lord's.
I'm proposing the following... given that Conway has already gotten off to a great start.
1. Pick 2 batsmen and bowlers as per usual.
For the England bowlers - start accruing points from now - (Anderson 1w, Robinson 2w)
However, if you select Devon Conway and he gets out for:
a) under 150 runs; then his 1st innings score x 0.8 (+10 bonus points)
b) between 150 and 174 runs; then his 1st innings score x 0.75 (+20 bonus points)
c) between 175 and 199 runs; then his 1st innings score x 0.7 (+30 bonus points)
d) Over 200 runs; then his 1st innings score x 0.65 (+50 bonus points)
and finally;
e) If Conway only scores 0-10 runs in his 2nd innings (if he bats) - a minus 75-point penalty shall apply.
Seems a little (intentionally) harsh I know... and I have no idea how it will work. Anyway, just a twist for us all.
2. Still select your catcher for each team. Most catches over both innings.
3. Still select your wicket keeper for each team. Most wk dismissals over both innings.
Forget the toss...
4. Winner of 1st Test - 50 points only. (Back to 100 points for the 2nd Test)
Try and get your selections in by the end of the first session if possible; lunch at the latest.
Good Luck!

None.
Too pressed for time so only concentrated on Conway. Nicholls is looking good isn't he?
Do you think we should do the same for him?

OK... 0.8 for now (50-100 runs), 0.75 for (100-150), 0.7 for (150-200), 0.65 for (200+ runs) Will apply a similar bonus as per Conway.
Nicholls out for 61 runs... so adjusted (x 0.8 rounded up) to 49 points. No extra bonus which would have applied if he'd scored 100 runs.

Thanks James... great to see you again.
Guys, it's just turned over to Friday here. I'll get the points board up first thing in the morning.
Great match to watch but I'm pretty knackered for the day.
Others are still welcome to post their selections up. We'll sort it all out later.

Re: 2021 England v NZ / World Test Championship Final Tipping Competition
Whoever has Devon Conway (all of us except for KP_F) ended up with 180 points. So much for my 'magic formula'. That didn't work!
However, if he gets out for under 10 runs in his second innings, we'll all (except for KP_F) be penalised 75 points.
Luckily nobody had Henry Nicholls who accrued 49 points (discounted since he had already scored some runs) for his final score of 61 runs.
Conway:
(200 x 0.65) + 50 point bonus
= 130 + 50
= 180 points
Both point scoring for Conway and Nicholls revert back to normal for the 2nd innings - unless Conway scores only 0-10 runs (as per above).
For the bowlers:
Ollie Robinson already had 2 wickets at the start of Day 2 - so minus 40 points for him.
James Anderson already had just the one wicket at the start of Day 2 - so minus 20 points for him.
If you had both (Robinson and Anderson) then it was unfortunately minus 60 points. Sorry James, KP_Fan and Olly!
Obviously points scoring goes back to normal for both Robinson and Anderson from the start of the 2nd innings.

Re: 2021 England v NZ / World Test Championship Final Tipping Competition
You're a Super bunch of Six but it would be nice to see a few more folks in the competition.
There's still so much to go in this one plus the 2nd Test and then the World Test Championship. It's a veritable feast of cricket coming up.
Just supposing someone wants to join in late...
Average Score 288 points - one point above JD currently.
KP_F is on an unusually low score by comparison - 131 points
So if anyone wants to join now; then how about Average Score minus 40 points = 248 points
Then to be fair to KP_F... a 120 point bonus to take him up to 251 points which would still be 36 points behind JD.
Does that sound too tempting or too unfair?
However, I must have your selections in before the next run is scored / wicket falls / catch taken.
Otherwise, any latecomers will just start on 248 points even if Rory Burns is closing in on a century.

Thanks Duty. It took a while but we got there!
Yes, for sure.
Thanks Olly. I have no idea either... but I think it should work now and it's great to have some more members on board.
Good Golly I'm Olly wrote:PJ I have no idea how you're calculating all this, but top work as ever.
Be glad for normal scoring in the 2nd test I bet?

Not going to even try to get my head around the scoring ... But I'm sure you have it working well , PJ ; and since it has me in second spot at present (not sure how) I am in favour of the system
Expecting a protest from KP_fan though ...

Re: 2021 England v NZ / World Test Championship Final Tipping Competition
KP_fan should be happy. I'm expecting a bar of Swiss gold in my bank account shortly.
Seems to be OK for now. I've just plugged in Tino's and Duty's picks... then add/subtract whatever it is to make 248 points. Need to remember to switch Conway's discounted cell back to the normal one; then simply subtract the 20 points to make it the 180 (from the 'live' 200) as calculated above.
For the bowlers it's simply a matter of -20, -40 or -60 but from now on it should be business as usual.

So the adjusted table looks like this now.

322 Alfie

307 Olly
300 Soul Requiem

248 Duty
248 Guildfordbat
Average Score: 292 (average back to 288 but we'll leave you there JD)
* also adjusted JD's score to 291. One below average as before... and a neat 40 above KP_Fan.

So glad you're here, Guildford. I must admit I was starting to get a little worried.
I'll get you up there on the board with 248 points... only 3 behind KP_Fan.
I've just been watching "Spinwash '93"... they had such colourful times touring India. The creme caramel eating contest was one of the non-cricketing highlights for me. Long live the King!
It really hits home just how difficult it must be to tour there. So many things can go wrong (and did) but at least they had an action-packed fun-filled time with plenty of laughs (and tears) along the way. It was still quite an achievement in my mind despite the end result. Felt sorry for David Gower and his non-selection.. they most probably could have used him over there.

Points Table
1st Test, Day 4:
691 James [343]
635 Tino [387]
633 Guildfordbat [385]
588 Soul Requiem [288]
576 KP_Fan [325]

532 King Carlos [284]
521 Pal Joey [202]
491 JDizzle [200]
425 Alfie [103]
344 Duty [96]
Average score: 545 [260]
First figure - accumulative score / accumulative average score
Second figure in [brackets] - daily score / daily average score
Notes:
It was a pity nobody had Rory Burns but quite a few had Southee and thus earned some big points for his 6-wicket haul. 120+50+35=205 points.
Conway made over 10 runs before getting out in his 2nd innings; otherwise I would have looked very silly applying the "75 point penalty".
Although Tino, KP_Fan and Duty might disagree.
Alfie and Tino stand to benefit an extra 50 points if we end up with a draw at the close of play today.
King Carlos and JD have opted for an England win and will earn 50 points if that result eventuates.
The rest of us are backing the Kiwis to perform some sort of major miracle.

Aargh ! Second to second last in the blink of an eye...
Suddenly I don't like the formula half as much.
Serve me right for picking the wrong England opener...

Fielders -
Taylor & Root
Keeper - Watling
Toss - England

If any of the team is different (particularly the England bowlers) I'll change it tomorrow.
Williamson out so I'll replace him with Taylor please.
If Southee doesn't play I'll have Boult in place of him. If Boult doesn't play, I'll have Wagner (if only for the music).
I'll let you know the England bowlers I'm selecting before 11:00 tomorrow.

Thanks Olly, Duty and James.
Olly and James - the toss and captain's decision?
Duty - assuming if NZ win toss - they bat... no brainer, huh?
Also remember this one is worth 100 points for win /draw correct pick.
Cheers Guildford.
