Great second try from a quick tap
First sighting of Josh McKay breaking a few tackles and a pin point kixk to Steyn who was lurking out on the wing!

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh - Unceasing Banter Thread 27
Dempsey has had another good game, could he really be SQ next autumn?
It is certainly a tempting thought!
Tuipoltu to me looks a much better player at 12 than 13, he is very direct and breaks tackles, I think we may see a lot more of him there, even internationally.

Glasgow playing some lovely rugby here. Would’ve liked Thompson to have put someone over the phase before Price scored though if I’m being picky!

Lovely again from Dempsey. Great play. If I'm being picky, Thompson should have given that though!

Dragons fought for that, but some effort there to keep Roberts out in the corner. Steyn covered the entire width of the pitch to make that!

Johnny Mathews breaks off the maul and scores.
The bench is pretty much all on now so their chance to have a crack, Glasgow don't seem to have eased up at all on both sides of the ball!

Well the bi-polar nature of Glasgow's season continues, after the debacle of last weekend, there looked like there still might be a decent team in there somewhere.
That was a much better performance, even with the caveat that the Drags are not one of the leagues stronger sides.
Much happier tonight!

My immediate takeaways;
Shona can play 12
McKay looks a real prospect
Apart from the first three lineouts Turner was superb
Dempsey has some dog in him, as the Aussies would put it
Darge is looking like the future Scotland openside
Batman looked refreshed after his city break in that London
The pace Dobie puts on his passes is awesome.
Can we compete with La Rochelle? Maybe.
Can we slaughter the Effeminates? Oh yes.

Real accuracy issues from Glasgow particularly in that first half. So many turnovers, knock one or mistakes in the opposition's 22.
Much improved performance certainly and some good individual displays.
Who was the co-commentator with the American/Canadian twinge to his accent?

These upcoming Christmas Derbies could be very entertaining and as a neutral, I can't wait .
Normally I'd say Edinburgh are favourites but this year its a lot tighter so tougher to call but I'm going to stick my neck out here (and probably upset a few on here) and say I think Glasgow may win both to retain the trophy they won last season.
I think players like Dempsey, Forbes, Steyn and Tuipulotu may be the difference plus Edinburgh don't have King Duhan anymore.
Please forgive me Edinburgh fans ahahaha.

Errmm - look at the tables! Glasgow look like a mid table team and might just scrape into europe. Edinburgh look like fighting to win the league

RDW wrote:Real accuracy issues from Glasgow particularly in that first half. So many turnovers, knock one or mistakes in the opposition's 22. Agreed, i thought they were intent on playing at a pace the which Dragons couldn't live with: the unintended consequence was that they looked rushed lacking composure. When they settled they were impressive.
Much improved performance certainly and some good individual displays. If they play like last week against Rochelle it will be Christians V Lions in the Colosseum. If they play like last night (but with a little more composure in the opening period it might be that we could come away with a win.
Who was the co-commentator with the American/Canadian twinge to his accent? Schiz didn't christen him Tenessee Tam for nothing.
P.S. rumour has it the first 1872 match won't be played in a stadium; Bradbury and Dempsey will settle it over 15 rounds in the carpark.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh - Unceasing Banter Thread 27
I've just noticed that the above post is riddled with quote function fails.
how the fecc did that happen? To me?
Anyhoo, two unrelated thoughts;
Ulster came out against Ospreys (no, not in a Luvvie way) and kept the ball pretty much continuously, for 12 minutes. Lots of passes, loads of off-loads, lots of attacking intent. After 15 minutes Ospreys were 3-0 up.This pretty much set the template for the whole game which Ulster narrowly lost. Dan Dan The coaching Man obviously learned a lot in his time at Scotstoun.
Stade Francais gubbed La Rochelle at the weekend. Either they will be looking to bounce back with a big home win on Saturday OR they will do the French thing of focussing on the league and put out a second string side. The sooner GC starts a thread the better.

Noticed that Venter has left Edinburgh for Bath. Bit disappointed to see him go, he seemed like a good prospect and I also thought he may be looking to qualify on residency for Scotland. I don't think I even got to see him play a match for Edinburgh during his short time with the club.

I thought he was SQ?
Anyway if he reckons he can get gametime then good on him - he's way down the pecking order at Edinburgh.

Shame to lose Venter so soon, I would understand it if he went off to SA again due to homesickness. He was signed under Cockerill and I guess the change to Blair may have pushed him down the pecking order a bit more.
Does not help that Edinburgh have a series of good centres who not quite good enough to consistently be away with Scotland.
12: Lang, Dean, Hutchison
13: Bennett, G Taylor, Currie, Johnstone

Venter is actually EQ and not SQ.
He just needs to play though at the moment, international rugby is a lo g way off for him till he proves himself.
Currie, who is pretty much the same age, is getting picked over him at Edinburgh, so presumably is currently rated higher

Venter could be a lost opportunity like McLelland though I hope they have figured out to look after 18 year olds moving to Edinburgh for the first time better than that. Hopefully it does not turn into a Mercer situation.
It is not the end of the world to see local products in Hutchison and Currie, who have come through the system, outperform bought in talent.

Currie, in particular, looks like a Rolls-Royce of a player - wouldn't be surprised to see him in the national squad in short order.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh - Unceasing Banter Thread 27
I had a look back and saw rugbypass did an article on him when Edinburgh signed him. I think that planted the seed in my mind that he was a long term prospect for Scotland. As we all know RP "journos”shoot from the hip so that could have been a pretty speculative article on their part.
If he’s EQ then sounds like he’s made a strong move to Bath. But as you say above Hutchinson and Currie are both progressing well so lots to be positive about anyway. Especially the upcoming 1872 walkover

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh - Unceasing Banter Thread 27
Come on. Do Glasgow fans really think they can win the cup this year?
Sure they have players like rufus and even price isn’t as knickers as he was last year, but really. You really think you can win?
My prediction is the Weegie forward pack crumble after Zander commits the 7th foul of the first half and gets yellowed. Matt F then gets mullered as he tries to “carry” the ball through mish, mbawsa and Magnus. Zander is seething at this while watching from the naughty step and when he gets back on has a “rush of blood” and gets a straight red for trying to tackle a dancing blairhorn in the face with his elbow. Glasgow then ask Seymour who is commentating to come out of retirement to take over and try produce a comeback. Edinburgh win by 58 points to 12

Mata and Hoyland have both been ruled out long-term due to serious knee injuries. Real shame for both, particularly Hoyland who has been on great form in the last year having basically missed the previous 2 to injury.
Edinburgh are well covered in these positions, and should give Bradbury the chance to have a long run at 8.

Edinburgh team for Sarries
Schoeman - McInally - Nel (Venter - Cherry - Atalifo)
Sykes - Gilchrist (Hodgson)
Crosbie - Haining - Watson (Bradbury)
Vellacott - Savala (Pyrgos - VDW)
Lang - Bennett (Hutchison)
Moyano - Boffelli - Blain
Big shame for Mata and Hoyland. As said, the cover is good for both and it should give Muncaster and Blain opportunities. Not sure about dropping Bradbury to the bench after two MOTM's, otherwise it is a strong team with Sykes, Savala and Blain getting a real test at this level.

Glasgow team for La Rochelle
Kebble - Turner - Zander (Bhatti - Matthews - Pieretto)
Cummings - R Gray (Bean - Harley)
M Fagerson - Dempsey - Darge (Miller)
Price - Thompson (G Horne - Weir)
Johnson - Tuipulotu
McLean - McKay - Steyn
Good side and a pretty great starting pack that would not look out of place for Scotland (shame about the bench). Really relying on Darge pulling a full 80 or we look short a nuisance at the breakdown come the second half.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh - Unceasing Banter Thread 27
As you say Hazel, a very good side. Actually, I would be hard pushed to think of a better starting XV. maybe Cole Forbes on the wing and Seaman at 13. I don't know if it's still early days for some of them but it doesn't feel like it's our best starting XV.I know that makes absolutely no sense, but I'm not looking at that team and thinking, "They'll take Rochelle to the cleaners."
Maybe it's the worry that we lose a centre to injury and McKay goes to the wing, Seaman to the centres and Thompson to 15....then enter Wee Dunkie at 10. Or we play most of the second half with all six of those forward replacements on the pitch.
Lets hope the French kick to our back three lots in the first 20 minutes so we can build up a healthy lead.
p.s. as you know MrsPip and I mind the grandkids. Both of them have had Chickenpox over the last two weeks; my old rugby club is putting out a Vets/ youngsters side tomorrow and both my sons are in the starting line up (Pipetto's debut) as am I. I shall fall asleep tonight praying that I wake up covered in spots tomorrow morning.

Still alive. They made me captain. Things hurt but I'm happy. Young Pipetto hasn't come home with me, apparently he is one of the lads now.
We only gave away one penalty at the breakdown in the first quarter: their scrum half looked up at me and said "Bloomin ell, that was early".
I ran the line for the second and third quarters. Coming on for the fourth the adrenaline had worn off and everything hurt.
Happy days.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh - Unceasing Banter Thread 27
Mark Palmer interview with Kyle Rowe in the Sunday Times.
Hard to imagine that Toonie has not noted his form!
When it comes to wingers, Gregor Townsend has an embarrassment of riches these days. Between Duhan van der Merwe, Darcy Graham, Sean Maitland, Rufus McLean, Blair Kinghorn, Kyle Steyn, Cole Forbes and Jack Blain, the Scotland coach can call on all manner of substance and many different styles, and another name has entered the conversation in recent weeks.
Before this summer, Kyle Rowe was a talent who had lingered for too long between promise and fulfilment. The 23-year-old had impressed with Ayr and Scotland Sevens but failed to make the breakthrough in spells at first Glasgow then Edinburgh. He was released by the capital club having made just a single appearance last season — in a Rainbow Cup dead rubber — despite having been fully fit for the majority of a campaign where Richard Cockerill struggled desperately for both results and bodies.
Rowe was picked up by London Irish and has kicked on quite spectacularly, playing a leading role in a backline that is among the Premiership’s most exciting. He scored a beauty of a try against Bristol in October, then went one (well, two) better against Saracens, landing a hat-trick to secure a 34-34 draw for 14-man Irish who had been 26 points down inside the final quarter.
Last weekend, Rowe showed more great footwork and speed to touch down in the win over Newcastle, and tonight will lead the line one again when Declan Kidney’s side open their Challenge Cup campaign against Pau in the Pyrenees.
“When London Irish came up, I couldn’t exactly say no,” the former Falkirk and Glasgow Hawks man said. “They needed back-up for back-three at that time and it just seemed for me like a good fit. After the past couple of years with Covid, and just not being playing rugby, it’s been nice to get regular game time. And obviously it’s nice that it’s down here at London Irish and in the Prem.

“Am I making it look easy? Well, there’s a lot of work that goes into every game. I’m just going out and enjoying myself, enjoying knowing that I’m putting the effort in every week to be in the best possible place. Irish is a really positive environment to be part of. We work hard in our attack, and we also work hard in our D [defence]. As a whole squad, we feel like we can do well.”
Last year was frustrating, not least because the shutdown of Super6 and the sevens circuit meant there was no alternative outlet for gametime. Now a regular starter with one of the most talked-about teams in the country, it has not escaped Rowe’s attention that Edinburgh are due at the Brentford Community Stadium next month.

“They’re in our Challenge Cup pool and it will be a good test for us,” he said. “We’re going to just take it game by game, and for me it’s about enjoying my rugby and showing people what I can do. I was fit pretty much the whole of Covid and just didn’t really get a look in anywhere. I had a couple of little niggles and injuries but nothing that kept me out for too long. Super6 wasn’t really happening, sevens wasn’t really happening, so it was more about just staying fit, to be honest.
“Obviously I wanted to be playing for Edinburgh, but for me it was more just about staying fit, so that if I was called upon I was in a position to perform.”

Rowe does not shy away from the topic of national selection, and there are several aspects to his story which make him a decent candidate to become one of Townsend’s famous left-field picks. He played for Scotland under-20s around the same time he was helping Ayr to a Premiership and Scottish Cup double in 2019 — scoring three tries across the two finals — and has also represented his country at football via the Scottish Independent Schools side during his time at Queen Victoria School near Dunblane.
“That’s a big aspiration of mine, playing for Scotland,” he said. “At this moment, I’m just enjoying my rugby down here at London Irish. If a Scotland call-up comes about, it comes about. If it doesn’t, I’m still young, I’m still only 23, I’ve still got time. I was a pretty keen footballer back in the day. I played centre-midfield, more a defensive midfielder; the guy who tries to win the ball back to let the boys go and do their thing.
“Leaving school, training was Tuesday and Thursday for both [sports] so I had to choose and I chose rugby. Even now though, if there’s a football about, I’m one of the first there still.”
We have to ask about the lid; the glorious mullet that streaks behind him when he is burning defenders.

“I got it during the lockdown at the start of this year,” Rowe revealed, declining the chance to claim he had been a trend-setter for Hamish Watson. “I was watching some TV, one of the boys brought out a pair of clippers, and I was like, ‘yeah give me a mullet’. I’ve kind of stuck with it since then.
“I’m going to keep it until it’s a certain length where I can donate my hair. So then it goes to a good cause. Like a charity shave-off. I’m that far into it now that I want to grow it to a point where I can use it to raise money for people.”
