First topic message reminder :

Thought I'd start a new thread for the winter cricket of 2021 that we (covid depending) have ahead of us. Obviously the World T20, but that has it's own thread...

The main event being the Ashes, with the dates below

Men's Ashes schedule
First Test: 8-12 December - Gabba, Brisbane (00:00 GMT)
Second Test: 16-20 December - Adelaide Oval, Adelaide (d/n - 04:00 GMT)
Third Test: 26-30 December - MCG, Melbourne (23:30 GMT, 25 December)
Fourth Test: 5-9 January - SCG, Sydney (23:30 GMT, 4 January)
Fifth Test: 14-18 January - Optus Stadium, Perth (02:30 GMT) (subject to change)

Women's Ashes schedule
Test: 27-30 January - Manuka Oval, Canberra (23:00 GMT, 26 January)
First T20: 4 February - North Sydney Oval, Sydney (08:10 GMT)
Second T20: 6 February - North Sydney Oval, Sydney (08:10 GMT)
Third T20: 10 February - Adelaide Oval, Adelaide (08:10 GMT)
First ODl: 13 February - Adelaide Oval, Adelaide (23:05 GMT, 12 February)
Second ODl: 16 February - Junction Oval, Melbourne (23:05 GMT, 15 February)
Third ODI: 19 February - Junction Oval, Melbourne (23:05 GMT, 18 February)

India have a busy winter, with New Zealand touring in November/December and then India head to South Africa for the boxing day test/January.
There's an interesting test series between Bangladesh and Pakistan in Bangladesh in Nov/Dec, which should be an entertaining watch. Unfortunately I don't see much cricket on the schedule for Pakistan/Sri Lanka (unless I am missing something!)
A few others on the future tours programme, but not confirmed yet as far as I see...

Good catch from Burns as well. England will need to take everything.

Very nice catch by Malan too. Needed an early one . Key will be following up with some more early strikes... But Robinson will have his tail up now so that's a decent start . Bowling a good line to Marnus I'm pleased to see.

Been a top opening spell from Robinson. Maybe lacking a bit of pace, but he's picked it up since that deserved dismissal of Harris. Easy to see why Harris struggles at the Gabba, he didn't know whether to be forwards or back for his deliveries.

Woakes...not so much. Time for the ultra-quick man.

Wood on already? Kookaburra only swings for minimal time… hope this isn’t wasted.

On this pitch I think seam is more important than swing early on with the Kookaburra. These new Kookaburra balls that stay hard a bit longer seemed to keep moving off the pitch for longer but still swung little and for not long at all.

No good giving our swing bowler a chance if he’s banging it in half way down

We’re going to get a lot of false hope from getting Harris out early this series aren’t we

I'd presume so.

That said I've been skeptical of how good Stokes is in the cordon for a while. He takes some screamers but puts a few down as well. A taker of great catches rather than a great catcher as it were.

His best position earlier on is squarer at gully to point rather than in the slips I think. He's also excellent at short extra or short mid-wicket in the sort of position that Kohli has become absolutely terrific at cutting off runs from.

Some lively stuff from Wood...has troubled Warner ; but no result yet.

England bowling has been quite good so far but they really need to get one of these soon : as has been noted by several posters , batting will get much easier once the ball ages a bit. And that fellow Smith is in next...

Warner looks frustrated that he hasn't been able to find the boundary rope more often. Labuschagne looking in wonderful touch, plays (or leaves) the lengths superbly and punishes anything too full.

Early days but Woakes has offered nothing so far. Botham Flintoff Stokes getting an early bowl.

Didn't take Stokes long to do both his tricks : clean bowling Warner - but overstepping as he does so picard

Got to be a huge blow to English morale , I'm afraid.

Warner hasn't looked all that secure ; but he's survived the first hour and that escape might have significant consequences...

Agony. Seems Warner is on for a big ton, couple of play and misses, an edge flying just wide of third slip, then Stokes oversteps. It's his day.

Bit happening, though. Edge from Labuschagne nearly carried to Root then.

Every ball Stokes bowled pre the dismissal was a no ball. Awful officiating. What happened to the third umpire doing it?

It has that feeling of a day when things could have gone so differently.

So many plays and miss, edges in gaps or just short, the no ball.

I was wondering about that. Thought they were supposed to call them retrospectively in any case ?

Some worrying stats I'm hearing about the number of times Warner has been reprieved by a no ball and gone on to make a hundred !

Wood's energy is encouraging. He deserves a result : can't help feeling one might bring two or more here. Getting the one seems to be the problem...

England have bowled better than the one wicket they've got, but them's the breaks. Getting a lot easier for batting now we're past 20 overs; not sure about the value of Wood just banging it in. Might see a bit of Leach before lunch.

Wood is using his short ball as a default more than a mix up. I don't mind him bowling a different length to Cummins, Hazlewood and Robinson as he's a different bowler but it's slipping into the wrong balance.

Root shuffling his pace bowling pack around , searching for the break. Haven't had much luck today it should be said ...Marnus very nearly taken at backward square then.

Neither batsman really "on top" : but they've done really well to get through some pretty testing stuff. Haven't been many easy balls to score from so they'll be glad to have raised the fifty clap

True. Even the weather...nice and sunny for batting ; though there's still a bit in the pitch for the bowlers.

Suppose you make your own luck , up to a point. Need to keep bowling well and not lose heart in the face of too many "not quite" moments.

Trouble is , when you get bowled out for 147 you rather need a lot of the breaks to go your way to get back into the game. Reckon they need something to happen very soon or it's going to be an uncomfortable lunch break - and probably a tough day afterwards.

Ouch. Leach's second over goes for 17 including 2 sixes from Warner.

As said before I think Leach is England's best spinner from a bare cupboard but there are red flags in his F-C record. He struggles to keep it tight when not taking wickets, has a really poor first innings record and struggles bowling to lefties.

And a good first half of an over for Woakes ruined by 4 byes from a ball that just died in the pitch.

It feels like one of those days that I hate being introduced to this silly sport.

Still no joy though the pace men have continued to bowl well - Woakes after a not too good start has been very good in his later work.
Unfortunately the introduction of Leach has released the pressure. Run rate which was struggling to get above 2.5 now well over three. I'm afraid the horse - if not yet off down the road - is well free of his stable now.

Good tactics from these two bats to go after Leach. Another headache for Root as the innings proceeds. Australia have had just about the perfect session they'd have wanted , despite some worthy efforts from England's bowlers. Long way back now for the tourists now.

I quite like Leach as a cricketer ; but he's not really a Test class spinner in my book , except on pitches that really fizz. An Asia specialist , if you like. Not sure he will be much value to England on this tour...but as you say , not too many alternatives.

So 113/1 at lunch. Not really a fair reflection of all the play but that's where it is.

Australia in a very strong position. Well done these two bats for getting through the tough bits and reaping the rewards.

Wood England's best I think , though all the pacers were mostly pretty good. Will surely get better results for lesser efforts on another day but that's no comfort for England fans I'm afraid. Don't blame you chaps if you go back to bed now...

This is getting comical from England already.

Burns drops a sitter. England's slip catching at 78% since the start of last year.

Hameed misses a village run out from 5 yards where he could have walked to the stumps.

I can't sleep but watching this is painful. What's the f***ing point.

Not getting any better for England since the break. Dropped catch , missed run out - and now some idiot invading the field of play.

128/1 and the three main pace bowlers are looking at a hard days work from here on. Still beating the bat quite often but that wicket just won't come...

Perhaps I'm being influenced by a selective memory here (?) but I really am never happy seeing Burns in slips.

Find myself agreeing with Warne here : this spell is quite vital for Leach (apart from his team's fairly desperate need !) if it goes badly we might not see much more of him on this tour.

First over just went for two so that's a start...

Very Happy

Not quite there yet ! Woakes bowling well at present - just can't quite find that edge. But if Stokes is considered too risky to ask to bowl with a presumed niggle they really are going to regret leaving out Broad.

Suppose then we might end up with a few overs from Root (who is I think underrated) Come on Leach , prove me wrong...

Wicket at last...total gift from Labuschagne from an innocuous delivery from Leach but Jack will happily take that Smile

Especially as he'd just seen fifty against his name in just 6.1 overs !

Smith is going to continue the policy of aggression though , it seems...

170/2

Almost reckless , the way Smith is going at Leach. Aussies seem set on destroying the England spinner right from the off. Mostly working so far , despite the Labuschagne dismissal.

Review against Smith now but it's probably high...

Yeah good bowling from Wood but it's actually impact just outside off. So lost review.

Another run out missed now so the day's themes continue unchanged...

Enough of Leach. Robinson back and beats the bat immediately...

Pace bowlers really have been a lot better than 185/2 suggests. But some days you just don't get your rewards. Suppose since this match is already effectively gone they might as well save up their good luck for another game Smile

Wood gets what he's deserved at last ! And it's Smith for just rats and mice for once. Just before tea too.

189/3 so way too late but still encouraging for the future.

Despite all the missed chances this bowling effort wouldn't look too bad if it were defending , say , 280. Defending 147 though you more or less need miracles...

Warner gone for 94... Bit out of the blue , misjudged a slower ball from Robinson ...Stokes - despite dodgy leg- made ground to take the catch...

And Green is bowled first ball ! Just left it - very poor choice Smile

Robinson on a hat trick...

Wow . Things have changed quickly - though Australia are probably set fair for a big enough lead anyway. But 196/5 is a world away from 185/2.

Would not have begrudged Warner a century. He certainly had more than his share of luck and it wasn't always pretty ... But he faced some fine bowling from the pace men and has probably played a match winning innings. Taking Leach apart may also be valuable going forward. I am no great Warner fan but I'm applauding that effort thumbsup

What's wrong with ground security here ? Another clown on the field holding up play ...
