DP World Tour chat
First topic message reminder :
As Pedro says, there isn’t a thread for this so I thought I’d start one (sticky, please?).
A great British Masters tournament and fantastic to see Thunderbear put all his past woes behind him and win again, thanks to two monster putts on 17 and 18, having done pretty much the same on Saturday.
On to Belgium this week.

A long way to go yet, but Lowry beginning to look very good just now. He's got the imagination, and he's one of the few who seem to know when and how to hit them, but also have the skill to pull off the shots needed in wind. Seem to remember the weather at Portrush being pretty awful as well...
That said, as I write this, looks like he's hoiked his tee shot left into cabbage on 10. Typical...

Can't deny it any longer.
Rory clearly has a mental block about majors.
Hope it goes away one of these days.
Go Shane.

Not played it Mac, not played many West Cost courses. Have you?
Haven't played Troon but you should try to play some of the West Coast courses; Turnberry, Prestwick, Prestwick St Nicks, both Gailes courses, Irvine Bogside, Dundonald, Barassie, West Kilbride are all fabulous.

Monty also got a lot of criticism for saying Woods should retire.
Clearly he was right. Woods is a cripple.

I thought you said Scheffler was boring, Super? I've just seen him smother a long iron off 18 about ~100 yards into the cabbage. Didn't even reach the ladies tee, but sadly he didn't do the 'traditional' forfeit for that felony....

Re: DP World Tour chat
Looks like it's Schauffele's. Great round today, but yesterday's was unbelievably good in the wind/rain and he holed almost nothing on the greens. Doesn't seem to have a weak spot - long (for a smallish guy), can work it both directions, good short game and solid putter. Biggest difference is probably now that he knows he's good enough after the PGA.
Would have liked Rose to have won. He's done almost nothing wrong all week and is under par in round 4. Just came up against a stupidly good round from Shauffele.

Was a fantastic Open - the wind really played havoc with some, and provided some great entertainment throughout the four days. Troon a lot more exciting than I remember it being in 2016 too.
Agree with Navy, was rooting for Rose to win and he played superbly, but came up against a wonderful round from Schauffele, best of the day by two shots to win a major is damn impressive. What a year he has had, after being the "nearly" man in majors for so long!
A really good major season this year in my opinion. Hopefully the Euros can nab one next year though!

It basically hinged on who holed the putts on 12, 13, 14; Schauffele did & Rose didn't; great effort from Rose but ultimately the best player won this week.

Ayrshire delivers again!! Absolutely enthralling 4 days, felt for Rose, he didn’t really do much wrong. Such fine margins, 3 very narrowly missed puts over 72 holes. Fair play to Schauffele though, outstanding 65 with all the pressure on.

I do wish the Europeans would bloody well step up in majors though. They should be considerably better at Links golf than Americans are and I know that they're massively outnumbered by Americans on the tour, but they should be doing better than this.

Well, as general observation, the Europeans I play golf with are better at links golf than the Americans I have played golf with (when I have played in GBI).
But, a top touring professional is an entirely different beast.
Regardless of where they learned to play the game, they are all such pure ball strikers that the margin between win/loss is razor thin.
Good for Xander and for Justin.

Top pros don't try and play the ground game, or any other shots we would think of as links shots.
Also the deep green side pot bunkers seem almost irrelevant now that they all have superb bunker techniques.

Fair point, even at my low standard I'm very rarely in bunkers on these types of course, perhaps they aren't just obsolete for the pros.

…unless they rake them like they did day 1 at Hoylake last year.

Not strictly European Tour comment but got half an eye on the final round of the Carris Trophy this afternoon, my former teaching pro’s son is right in the mix, looks like he’s probably going to come up just short, but great effort all the same.

Ludvig Aberg not showing in the field (yet) for the Omega European Masters in a weeks time. He is the defending champion and I understood "you always defend your title". It's not as if he is playing a lot of tournaments in the run up.
Open - MC
3M Open - DNP
Olympics - T18
Wyndham - DNP
St Jude - T40
BMW - T2
So he'll play Atlanta and then he could play the European Masters. He could then have a week off whilst the Irish Open is on, and then play the BMW PGA. He still has time to enter......

Going to The Belfry on Friday for the British Masters - see Tyrrell Hatton is down to participate in the field, along with some other notable names and a strong cast of DPWT players. Should be a good time!

Been watching the Omega European Masters on TV as I went there last year. Then, I followed a young Swiss player Cedric Gugler for a while and spoke to his family. He has just finished a couple of places outside the position where he would have got an automatic tour card for next year. (Needed solo 2nd, finished =4th). But a top 10 finish gets him into the Irish open and a few more points will get him there.

Brilliant last round Rasmus Hojgaard to pip McIlroy yesterday. McIlroy will get some flak over the bogey on 17, but his last round was still a 69 and anyone shooting 65 around RCD in the last round to win deserves the plaudits.
On RCD itself - what a track. On my bucket list even more now.

A bit more scar tissue for McIlroy this morning, but again I think he didn't really lose it; more that Horschel won it. Fantastic eagle to grab it in the end, as well.
Like Horschel. Like the fact he's willing to play elsewhere, is a bit of a character and seems a decent enough bloke with it.

Tend to agree on both counts, you go into a play-off and birdie the first 2 play off holes you wouldn’t expect to come 2nd in most cases. The 18th in regulation though…Billy birdied from the fairway bunker, McIlroy could only par from the middle of the fairway. The thing that fascinated me there was the commentators suggesting that Rory “”didn’t have a club for 253 yds” wtf!! So he tried to reach with a 4 and tugged it. He’ll know that course like the back of this hand AND know how far he hits his 3 wood. Why therefore would he take a club off the tee that would leave him that “awkward distance”??
In the grand scheme of scar tissue though US open was getting hit by a truck, Irish open was getting hit by a car. This was was a pushbike not going very fast.

Yeah. I thought that was very, very odd as well. I can see why he didn't go for driver if he didn't trust to a controlled fade - anything straight or double-crossed is in trouble if he hits driver.JAS wrote:...The 18th in regulation though…Billy birdied from the fairway bunker, McIlroy could only par from the middle of the fairway. What I can't understand is a) how he honestly thinks he can hit a proper 4i ~250 yards (even he isn't that long) or b) why the caddie doesn't say to him to lay up, pitch it close and try to hole a putt (or choke down on his 2i or 3w, maybe incl. hitting a fade, and deliberately go long). If he flushes the 4i, I think he's highly likely to be in the water. As it was, he got away with it a bit because he pulled it.

A player in contention with Rory can play with such a high confidence because the don't fear Rory up the stretch, while Rory is obviously unable to play to his usual high standard under pressure.

Enjoyed the end to the Spanish Open on Sunday - great work from Hidalgo to fend off the charge of Rahm, especially considering that missed putt on 18 on the 72nd hole!
