June 16 1983 - Most shameful card of Boxing in history!!
Chief support to the main event in Madison Square Garden saw unbeaten Billy Collins who was lined up to face the winner of the main event lose the decision and his career to a bare fisted Luis Resto...Testament to the young Irish kid that he took all the punishment from the decent trialhorse..Lucky for all his Dad noticed the gloves were missing padding.
Too brave for his own good... Collins would die in what many thought was a deliberate car smash driving in to a brick wall shortly after..
As for Moore v Duran which followed it...A handsome talented young Champion was reduced to a journeyman by a criminally useless referee who was the only person in the arena who was happy for a dead on his feet Moore to keep fighting...Always remember Jose Torres losing his marbles at ringside screaming at him to stop it...Randy Gordon the NY commissioner would have to step on the canvas to end it...Moore had fought poorly that night due to having his right eye blurred from a typical Duran thumb in the first...Duran was a master of the dark arts as well as a master of the ring.
Sadly Moore would soon after this defeat lose a shot to the average Drayton who he would have beaten in his prime and his career nosedived thereafter..
His life ending prematurely early when he tried to stop his BMW rolling down his drive and got caught under the wheels.
Horrible night in June 83 for Boxing and careers were ruined for ever due to criminal endeavour and negligence...

I say it all the time but if you haven't seen it go and find Assault in the Ring about the Collins\Resto fight and aftermath. Absolutely disgusting and ruined just about everybody involved bar the person responsible

One thing that the fight did expose is the problem of having Dad in the corner..
Like Hilton v Hines maybe pulling out the Son early saves the career... But who knows ??
Doubt Dewitt beats Hilton if a spent Matthew gets retired after 8 rounds against Hines..
Hilton liked his food...Hurt his career.
