England's Winter of Cricket 2022/23
First topic message reminder :
Of course we have the World T20 covered in a separate thread, but I thought we should have a new one for England's upcoming games this winter, which feature:
Three ODIs in Australia (17th-22nd November)
Three tests in Pakistan (1st-21st December)
Three ODIs in South Africa (27th January-1st February)
Two tests in New Zealand (16th-28th February)
Three ODIs in Bangladesh (March)
Looking forward to the tests, but I think the ODIs will be instantly forgettable!

Re: England's Winter of Cricket 2022/23
Had to go out just as they took the field so pleased to get back and find them ticking nicely...
Both playing rather fluently now. Crawley 35 Duckett 26 ...all in just ten overs ! Run a ball stuff... 63/0.
Pitch looks a belter.

Wonder if England think this is still t20 ?
Boundaries galore. 87/0 off twelve... Not a single maiden yet. Field has been spreading but hasn't stopped the runs flowing...

Some start by England here, really punishing some very average bowling.

And Crawley to 50 now...just 38 balls. Hasn't had to run too many either - 11 boundaries in his 54

Fifty for Duckett too now ...a comparatively restrained 50 ball affair
Crawley is up to 73 from just 58 balls. England 127/0 off 18.
Bazball , eh ?

150 up in the 23rd. Crawley 84 and commentators trying to jinx him with talk of a hundred before lunch

Yes they are a bit inexperienced and it shows. But the batting has been quite impressive : they've not missed many opportunities to score , and some of the boundary hits have been very well taken.

Its pretty much exactly the bowling that Crawley needs to get some confidence alfie so i am not complaining

Think he's going to run out of overs to get the hundred before the break...probably won't mind too much if he's not out at lunch.
91 from 79. He's slowed down

A well played ton for Crawley but I have been more impressed with Duckett myself.
He has been calm but attacking.

All happens quickly , eh ? Second hundred - well played Ben Duckett - and then both of them fall. Nearly got Pope too but he's kicked off as if he wants to keep the run rate going...
Shock ! A maiden over ! What are you doing , Joe Root ?

Re: England's Winter of Cricket 2022/23
Root gone after a modest 23... Rather a clear lbw , waste of a review really. Mahmood two wickets to go with the hundred runs he's conceded in his first 15 overs in Test Cricket ...
England 286/3 in danger of squandering a great start. Brook in now and then it's just the all rounders

300 up as the Pope ticks past thirty...only 49 overs down so if they get a full day's quota this should be a pretty heavy first day total !
Wouldn't expect any of the remaining bats to exactly take an overly cautious approach...

Tea at 332/3. Suppose that makes it - almost - Pakistan's session considering where they were at lunch !
But Brook is off to an ominously aggressive start so I reckon there are a few more runs coming today...

You can never tell for sure but this looks beautifully set up for when Stokes, Jacks and Livingstone come to the wicket.

Dead pitch or not this has been mightily impressive so far. On a pitch like this you want to leave yourself as much time as possible in the fourth innings and they're doing that.

If they ever do
Pope 99 ... Brook to a first Test fifty
And a hundred for Olly

I wonder when the last time England's top 3 all scored centuries in the same innings?
Strauss, Cook and Trott in 2010-11 down under maybe?

Re: England's Winter of Cricket 2022/23
I've just woken up, wasn't even sure if the test was on, switched the TV on, the score wasn't displaying, but the commentator informs me it's 410/3. That brought me round.
That's a score and a half, isn't it? It's like playing the old Brian Lara games and you can't be bothered to do it realistically.
England going to be the first team to make 1,000 runs in a test?

Correct. TMS just gave the stat that it's only the third time we've done it, with that one and Hobbs, Sutcliffe and Woolley in the mid 1920s.
Bet neither the other instances happened at a run a ball.

Sorry, got the numbers wrong - Brook now needs 10 off 8 balls to make England's fastest ever Test century.

If any of you are of the betting persuasion - SkyBet have it 7/2 that England score 700, 20/1 for 800, 33/1 for 900, 100/1 for 1000.

I'm not THAT old. Better ask Guildfordbat
Actually, as a kid I had a book that I think previously belonged to my Dad, authored by Herbert Sutcliffe, with a title something like 'How to be a first class batsman'.

Re: England's Winter of Cricket 2022/23
Shock horror, England have lost a wicket - Pope gone LBW for 108.
If there is one criticism today, it's that none of the batsmen have gone big after passing 100. Obviously, in the context of this position, it's not so relevant, as everyone has contributed, but there will be other days where one centurian will need to make a big score as the rest only chip in with lesser contributions.
