Fighters screwed before the first bell...... Empty Fighters screwed before the first bell......

Sometimes you are screwed before you start in a fight.....These guys were pretty much done before the fight..

Lee Roy Murphy Lko10 Rickey Parkey......

Some people are unlucky in life and then others are Lee Roy Murphy.  One of the best Amateurs to have graced the US shirt and Captain of the ill fated 1980 Olympic team....Murphy was ignored by all the top promoters perhaps due to his addiction......To McDonalds....

While others earned big money nothing came easy to the Cruiserweight.  However still unbeaten he won the IBF Cruiserweight title from Marvin Camel and proceeded to defend it three times (His defence against Mutti resembled the end of Rocky 2)....His 4th defence should have been routine against the ordinary oft-beaten Parkey but his usual battle with junk food meant he showed up 5 pounds overweight the day before the fight and spent hours in the sauna getting down.

The resulting Zombie got battered in 10 and he fell out of love with the sport soon after.  Murphy should have had a better career but sadly discipline wasn't a virtue.

Scott Quigg L12 Carl Frampton.............

Whoever decided that it would be a good idea to let the shrewd Frampton win the first four rounds while conserving energy really needs to look in the mirror....Like BJS Frampton is smart enough to count to 7...and 7v5 = 2 rounds ahead.....Frampton could pick his moments.

Paid for this garbage and the always willing Quigg was sold down the river in a fight he probably wouldn't have won anyway....But he certainly wasn't going to win with one hand behind his back..

Bob Fitzsimmons L Disq 8 Tom Sharkey......

The famous Sharkey is probably in the top 10 of fighters never to be Heavyweight champ......He's also renowned for dirty fights which may or may not be his fault.........Corbett v Sharkey was dodgy and in this one the famous Wyatt Earp was vehemently protested against as referee by Fitz' team because his friend was the Manager of Sharkey and a $10,000 bet was talked about before the fight......Lo and behold a cantering Fitz who was winning easy landed a body shot that took out Sharkey......A few minutes later a legal shot was deemed illegal and Fitz was screwed in a fight he was never going to win.

Pernell Whittaker L12 Jose Ramirez....

Had a big debate with someone 30 years ago as to whether Whittaker won 11 rounds or all 12 in this one.....As Pernell was never a big hitter and Jose had a great chin (Took Rosario's bombs) it was always likely to go the distance....

Whittaker was screwed sadly.....But that's life.. rose

Robin Reid against Sven Ottke would be another one, he wasn't winning that fight any time soon, I reckon even if he'd knocked him out the ref would have DQ'd him. Martinez against Cintron in a similar vein, but goes one step further considering he did stop him but shamefully the fight was restarted and finished in a highly contentious draw.

In terms of crowd rowdiness seemingly intimidating the referee and / or judges, and making it impossible for the away fighter to escape with a verdict (without potentially getting lynched on their way out, at any rate) then the first Reggie Johnson fight against Castro is one that stands out for me, along with Darchinyan against Gorres. The home fans were out of control and in both cases the officials seemed to cave into this.

Doubt he'll get much sympathy, but suspect Margarito's mind was all over the place as he stepped into the ring against Mosley, knowing he'd been rumbled for his wraps beforehand, that the commissioner was passing that information to HBO at that very moment so that it could be broadcast and that his reputation (and perhaps his whole career) might be about to be destroyed. Under those circumstances it's not surprising that Mosley absolutely leathered him like that.

I remember Jones got the fighter of the tournament award.......As for Sven Ottke only needed to go the distance didn't he....

Kind of wonder how many title fights were fixed in the 30s 40s 50s with the Cosa Nostra....I know Jack Sharkey got stopped by a left uppercut thrown from the neighboring state against Carnera.......and "40/1" Braddock beating a clowning champion over 15 in Baer.....Great odds those !!...

Mosley v Marg is a good call reminiscent of the LA police that got off over Rodney King and a billion dollar riot ensued......Safe to say what was going to happen in the retrial.....

Often think Hagler should have conceded everything to Leonard except 15 rounds......A fight won at the table perhaps.

Cheers for the replies...

The 12 round distance for the Hagler/Leonard fight was more to do with the WBC no longer sanctioning 15 round fights was it not? The IBF refused to sanction the fight from the start, the WBA stripped him for not facing Herol Graham so that left only the WBC title. I don't think a non title fight was ever really viable.

Riddick Bowe v Lennox Lewis (Seoul Olympics).

The East German ref was all over Bowe from the first round, looking to penalise him for everything. The stoppage was ludicrous.

Always thought because of Bowe's PR faux pas in dumping the WBC belt in the bin to avoid facing Lewis in the pros, that he must have taken a caning in the Olympics. Reality though is very different. Bowe boxed the sweeter in round one with Lewis' wild right swings looking amateurish and he took one clean shot in the second and then got stopped.

Awful fight, awful ref and awful stoppage, so often overlooked because of the RJJ robbery.

Leonard wanted 12 so the WBC got $1.2 million for sanctioning it which was a huge fee back then.....Leonard got $11m and Hagler $13m..

Rest assured as none of the bodies ranked Leonard if Marv had held out for 15 the WBA or IBF sanction it in the blink of an eye..

But $13m for a past it great who hadn't fought for 3 years sounded swell and why not ???......Better still fight orthodox and don't jump on him early so he can get his confidence up..
