Glasgow & Edinburgh Discussion Thread 31: The Roadmap for Success Vs The Perpetual Roadworks of Incompetence
As requested, another thread connected by the M8. Two teams about as comparable as Adam Peaty and Eric the Eel.
Will Glasgow build on their title win next season?
Will Edinburgh even make the top half of the table?
Speculation and more on another volume of the patter papers.

How apt and fitting that the last word on the previous thread was FES and myself bickering like an old married couple and I cut him off by abusing the Quote Functionality app.
The Warriors FB page has had lots of photies of the players at the Welcome Home Hoolie the other night. Lots of happy Warrior Nation types posing with players and THE TROPHY. There was one of Ross Thompson holding said trophy...I captioned it, "Ross best enjoy that while he can...It'll be a long time before he gets to hold another trophy.
No-one seemed to find that funny
That should set the mood for the rest of this thread.

We’ll see Jimbo, Everitt may come good. On the whole though I’m struggling to see how Edinburgh will win with the squad they have. I’d just like to see Edinburgh make the playoffs next season.

Just commenting so that this pops up in "MyPosts" as I find the schtick on here deeply entertaining.

The mighty King of the Blarehorn secures an ERCC winners medal and Top 14 champions medal in his opening season and also scored himself in the final at the weekend. Not a bad year for the gangling speedster. Very pleased for him - he found his spiritual home in many ways.

A remarkable season, not least because he started it playing for Edinburgh!

Re: Glasgow & Edinburgh Discussion Thread 31: The Roadmap for Success Vs The Perpetual Roadworks of Incompetence
Champions and Challenge Cup draws today
Glasgow have Racing 92, Toulon, Sale and Quins to play with Stormers the other URC team
Edinburgh have Black Lions, Gloucester, Vannes and Bayonne to play with Scarlets the other URC team
Brutal draw for Glasgow but all the groups look horrible. Edinburgh should be favourites though in theirs

Champions Cup draw :
Glasgow Warriors, Racing 92, Sale Sharks, Stormers, RC Toulon, Harlequins
Could be a lot worse. The French sides are not the powers they were; and neither of the English sides are unbeatable. And two (I think) of them will have to go to SA.
Glasgow could, should, qualify.
There, jinxed it

Well fairly brutal when you think our games are a Farrell-led Racing, this year's Champions Cup semi-finalists in quins and Sale/Toulon will be physical contests. Not sure there were any easy games in the draw!
Tend to agree we should be able to find two wins (the home games) and maybe get an away win at the English side.

Cockers back to Edinburgh with the Black lions then, or the other way round. That is a match he will surely cherish and make sure his team are up for it. The words Banana Skin spring to mind!

The Black Lions ran Gloucester close last season but then lost in a friendly to a Tigers development squad towards the end of last season.
Cockers will be desperate to win but the playing resources he has available aren't exactly world beating.

It's okay, Edinburgh's playing resources are managed so badly that this is balanced out.

Goodness, Hoggy has managed to get himself arrested again in Hawick, for breaching his bail conditions.
He appears to have some sort of death wish atm, the rehab does not really seem to have worked in any shape or form. He is back on social media as well, the thing he says he really hates.
It will be interesting to see if all this publicity proves to much even for Montpellier to put up with!

French sides have a low tolerance for bad public behaviour - he needs to be careful or he'll lose that gig.BigGee wrote:Goodness, Hoggy has managed to get himself arrested again in Hawick, for breaching his bail conditions.

Bordeaux is a beautiful place to live and he's joining a good side which finished 3rd in the Top 14 this season (albeit they absolutely got their arses handed to them by Blarehorn and his mates in the Grand Final). They need his size and nous. 77 caps at 30 years old is nothing to be sniffed at.

Presumably following the Toulon business model of only recruiting old, broken and/or over-hyped players.RDW wrote:George Carlin wrote:French sides have a low tolerance for bad public behaviour - he needs to be careful or he'll lose that gig.BigGee wrote:Goodness, Hoggy has managed to get himself arrested again in Hawick, for breaching his bail conditions.

Desperation. Nearly got relegated last season. They've also signed Mohamed Haouas who's not exactly a nice chap either. Possibly happy to sweep bad behaviour under the rug if they can stop being awful.

Chris Dean leaves Edinburgh to pursue another playing opportunity. With the emergence of Currie and the arrival of Tuipolotu junior, maybe he did not see himself getting much gametime.
He has been a decent player for Edinburgh over the years and unlucky not to get capped. Definitely a better player than other centre's who have been capped over the years.
No doubt we will here where he is off to soon enough.

Sad that Dean was unable to have a proper goodbye. As BG said, an uncapped centre at 30 in a position with young options (Tuipulotu, Currie) and a capped option (Lang) is probably going to struggle for a good contract.
Dean would be a good pick-up for a French D2 club or maybe second division in Japan like Laidlaw's club...

The Offside Line were touting the idea that one of Glasgow centre's might move east to fill his spot!
Can't see that idea going down well with the Glasgow faithful.

Matt Scott comes back to Edinburgh for the third time on a 12 month contract.
Looks like Chris Dean contract was traded in to allow that to happen.
He should be an experienced old hand to have around and hopefully improve the backline.
He can hardly make it worse!

Gotta say I'm not sure we need him. At his peak, hell yes but he's got a lot of miles on the clock.
Saying that, I can't imagine Riko Ioane and Damian De Allande were banging on the SRU's door to move to Edinburgh.

They definitely nerd somd fresh blood in the centres do Edinburgh moving forward.
Bennett, Lang and Scott all have probably seen their best years already. Only Tuipolotu Jnr looks like one for the future and he is a bit of an unknown quantity in truth.
Scott will probably be useful for a season, but someone badly needs to rebuild that backline.

The press release involves Everitt discussing Scott as a mentor to Mosese and Currie as well as "the up-and-coming backs joining the club’s expanded academy, which will be announced in the coming weeks.”. Not a bad role for him with the clear emphasis being Mosese and Currie as the leading talent in the centres for the club.
Considering the lack of contracts being thrown at him and his desire to move back to Edinburgh he probably came in on cheaper contract.

Having an experienced centre in Scott as a mentor sounds a lot better than having Dean. A good player Dean is, but he was like for like with Lang and I guess Everitt recognises that an experienced head will help improve the midfield.
I'm happy with the changes he's implemented there, something had to be done. If both Moses and Currie play well together this season it could really make a difference. Lang, Bennet and Scott add solid backup to those two with Cameron Scott there to develop.

I suppose he's come from a winning environmental too - that Leicester team won the Prem and was full of international players and some world cup winners.
Wonder what he'll make of going from standing outside Pollard to Ben Healy...

In theory it sounds great; but in practice it only works if his name is Duncan Weir.
However, a 33 year old inside centre whose best years are fading into memories is probably still going to find Ben Haley just a tad on the slow side.

He was an outside centre for Tigers. Helped lead the defensive line, link with the outside back and target under resourced breakdowns. His only issue last season was staying fit. He's probably only got one, two max, seasons left in the tank but the rugby brain is still working well.
He's played with both Pollard and Ford at Tigers so might be able to give Healey some pointers.

Re: Glasgow & Edinburgh Discussion Thread 31: The Roadmap for Success Vs The Perpetual Roadworks of Incompetence
Watching Healey play is like watching Phil Godman calculating plays using an abacus. If his form continues in the same vein, I'd put him in the same category as those FHs from the dark days. Even Jade Te Rure looked sparkier in attack.
We'll see if it's a coaching issue or if it's a player issue when we watch Thompson play there. He may not have been the most clinical player for Glasgow but he's a much more attacking fly half.
Agree with Sam that Scott is a great rugby brain to have around, I think Pete Horne made a difference with Glasgow when he joined the coaching ranks. Scott has obviously been around Edinburgh before. Maybe he's looking at a coaching career?
Bring back Mr Greig.

Laidlaw coaching Edinburgh in the future is probably not that far fetched, as he is already a head coach in Japan.
Give it a year or two and he may fancy a move home

Agree with Sam that Scott is a great rugby brain to have around, I think Pete Horne made a difference with Glasgow when he joined the coaching ranks. Scott has obviously been around Edinburgh before. Maybe he's looking at a coaching career?
Bring back Mr Greig.
I think he's looking at a law degree, there were some rumours he had business interests in Edinburgh he'd head back to oversee as well if he didn't get a new rugby contract. His wife has a job at a private school up Edinburgh way and after she put her career on hold whilst he was in the Prem they are prioritising her career now with a move back towards home.

He's also coaching. He signed on as specialist skills coach for Currie (another homecoming for him), so assuming that is something he wants to move into.
